But sometimes you simply cannot bypass the telling entirely, so simultanously showing what you're telling is usually a good compromise (if not better than either of those on its own).

The twist when John Doe gives himself up happens around the third act while The Sixth Sense twist is at the end of the film. Hi Filmento, I'd like to know how certain horror movies like The Wailing, Hereditary, Midsommar, the Ring etc are able to evoke and sustain this feeling of ominous dread throughout. Is it predominantly through directing choices (like sound, music, and shooting style) or through good old fashion storytelling techniques? Would love a breakdown.
Storytelling does get the viewer involved but it does not, in itself, plant emotions, like dread. The emotions are generated from the overall experience : ominous music, shady visuals, stressing sound effects, plus of course everything you know of the threats lurking around, and the fact that they don't have apparent or easy weaknesses.
@@oneoranota I think its the other way around, the more you DON'T know about the threats lurking around, the more horrendous it is. Fear lies in the unknown. Take 'It Follows', we sure do know all the rules about it, but the great thing about it is the stuff that we can't know: WHEN it will approach again (you can only guess really), and HOW it will look like when it approaches again (could look like anyone). This generates the unrelenting dread of it. Not knowing is the greatest contribution to horror. And its definitely a storytelling choice to come up with a good horror concept that leaves enough unkown variables to give the audience the heeby jeebies. Most directing choices like the music, dark visuals and stressing sounds are mostly cheap tricks, and wont really work if the concept just sucks. And show the monster to early, to direct or to often, and you will just lose every tension you built prior because the audience then just knows how the monster looks like (the first Alien is a prime example of how to do it right). To many cheap and bad horror movies out there rely on just those cheap tricks. Of course they can add to the horror if done right, but many good horror films can flip the directing tropes on their heads, and still be really great (Midsommar showing very bright and sunny visuals for example).

Release: You let out your pain and vow to stay up to date on your milk.
Filmento I am currently going more and more into filming and how to make a good film, and you are my biggest inspiration, thank you so much!!! I love your videos!!!
Its so sad that I had to jump the Twist chapter, not because I didnt wanted spoilers for Seven, for the contrary, I knew the spoilers, due Filmento's old video, and thats scarred me for life ngl. Twist is honestly the most powerfull tool for storytelling IMO, the shock, the surprise, and Seven was, even tho I was unknawhere, the biggest plottwist movie ever made, a movie that somehow I knew it was but didnt knew its name, and sadly I will never be able to enjoy as a first viewer, because even if you know the twist, still a great movie, but lacking the surprise aspect, literally killed the movie for me, which I will never be able to enjoy. Not blaming Filmento, it was my fault, my lazyness for not watching the movie before, my stupidness for keep watching the video of a movie I never saw, and my idiotic mistake for been ignorant and watched the final scene outside Filmento video without seen the movie, revealing the second twist at the end, which was a twist I knew since my childhood days but never knew even the movie it came from. That event hurt me for days, psychologicly and even physhically (not wanting to say details but lets say at the moment of frustation I did extremefull harmfull things to myself out of anger), and since months, everytime I look Filmento mentioning Seven, I get triggerred in some way like a PTSD activates. Just saying that, between all the tools Filmento mentioned, Twist is one of the most powerfull, that if not handled well like Last Jedi, can make a movie really horrible, but if used well, can make a movie like Seven be one the most amazing and brilliant art pieces ever made. Spoilers can be good for some movies, and they dont always ruin it, specially if you see a movie with a twist more than one time, but spoilers can be harmfull for people who take this serious, call them crazy, sick or "JUST GO OUTSIDE", but that is not changing the fact how some stuff you think its idiotic can be important for most people. And this idea about Twist can be applied with any other tool Filmento said. Anyway, idk if some day I will ever forget this to experience Seven, may be not, since it has really deep scars in me, in every way, almost killing my passion I had for cinema at the time, but throught my experience with pain, I hope saying this can show how mastering art can bring joy and excitement for millions, and how mastering its tools its important to bring your name and history, and how you should be carefull with spoilers and ruining experiences.
oh..thats why i love watching back to the future..because the scene connected later on in a manner of satisfaction..thus, we will give a smile that endorphine has kicked in..

Awesome video, I'd like to see Filmento talk about Godzilla 2014, since I see that it's a movie with very mixed reviews, loved and hated.
i loved it
@@zad_rasera Im divided, it had things i love and things i hate, and since dumb brain can't really know why, I'd like a deep analysis u know
Oh come on!!!!
*”Extra Variable”* had exactly _ZERO_ Jackie Chan clips/shout outs!!.........
*THATS TOO FEW JACKIE CHANS!!!!*
Damn he even included the sponsor message in the "payoff" segment
Ladies and gentlemen, Filmento’s magnum opus
Great example of Hot Coffee is in "Inglorious Bastards" with Hans Landa and Shoshana. And also, great video :)
Yes, more tools for us tools.
As an aspirant writer, I'd love more of these summarised, condensed packages.
suggestion: The office - how to make an audience cry
When Al Pacino and Robert meet for the first time in Heat and Holmes and Moriarty conversation plays as a chess match are tied 1st for Greatest scene EVER!
I'm using your knowledg as Dungeon Master sor RPG, its harder cause i dont have the visual component on my works, but thanks to you i'm trying to build ever bettere stories for my player and i fell the improovment, thanks
Wish I could like this video 20 times over, at the very least... Great stuff !!
That whole Sherlock moriarty scene is perfection
I 've been wondering in transformers 2007 is Film Perfection or atonmy of a failure
You always find the funniest reaction videos to overlay on whatever scene your talking about!
Jason Bourne did better in half a movie than Bucky Barnes did in an entire series.
The scene in which Nic Cage's character is suddenly face to face with the person who pretty much ruined his life, he would have every right to explode on her for what she did. But he can't. Not in public, and especially not at his job. An added challenge for the character to overcome or work around.
This is why Civil War is my hands down favorite Marvel movie
Made me cry a bunch of times, made me mad a bunch of time, just like the scenes in the movies... Damn, this Guy is GOOD.
Next suggestion : conjuring 3
Dude, you have timed this video very very well... although I am already drunk...
Edit - and high
Some Iconic Scenes: 4 Days of working out the Brain for it.
Other Movies Scenes: 10 Seconds needed during Filming of the Scenes without needing the Script.
Great example of Hot Coffee in the ending of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Hey Filmento, I have a video suggestion for you. Could you look at the movie Signs and how they properly waited to show the aliens until the climax of the movie? It definitely made a more scary and suspenseful movie than other alien/monster movies (such as A Quiet Place). Thanks!
I'm not a writer, I'm an amateur photographer. I have always appreciated good visual art from the ancient to modern, I took an literature class in college (probably a requirement) where we learned to interpret and appreciate the literary form of art. Something I've never done until that point. I loved it. I also loved this video. As I said my mind is geared more towards the visual then the written word so I deeply grateful to this video essay. I tent to lose site how important a script and he writing within is to truly create a great sceen a great film it complements the cinematography and visual composition to become not just a great scene but a powerful one. As alway awesome work you do. Even though you've destroyed just a few of the movies I liked but now don't remember so fondly. LOL Dont ever stop...P.S.I love your job! :-)
im more of an artist than writer/filmmaker but im glad you're here to verify and help me build my own world. Thank you so much Filmento
What I learned. Solve every conflict with sexual tension.
Tomorrow: fired for sexual harassment.
Damnit....
Intro: It's a hot morning with no AC. A bowl of cereal and milk would be nice. You pour the cereal.
Tension: You wonder if there's actually milk in the fridge.
Reversal: There is, but you lift it full strength and knock a bunch of stuff over because the jug barely contains any milk.
Choice: You can quickly go to the store. This issue will be resolved quickly. You put the milk away and grab your keys.
Deadline: There's traffic. Plus the store is packed.
Power dynamics: Your card declines buying the milk. The clerk can't just give it to you for free. There's nothing you can do.
Theme: As you head home, you guess you'll just have to accept the bowl of cereal with a pathetic amount of milk. You're determined to eat the cereal after these four hours.
Twist: You had actually put the milk away in the cupboard, and you return home to find it spoiled in the hot house.
Release: You let out your pain and vow to stay up to date on your milk.
It's really fun to see movie youtubers use example of other movies and not just the famous ones.
Finally, the Filmento Cinematic Universe crossover event we've been waiting for!
Did anyone else no(oooooo)tice Steve Carell screaming NOOOOOOOOO during the explosions in the Avenger's headquarters? :D

OK you know a movies good when filmento tells you to watch it before he talks about it. Brb
EDIT: holy fuck that was a good movie, nice
Civil War AND Sherlock Holmes in a single Filmento Perfection video? Fucking summer Christmas, I tell you what
I never thought a loaf of bread could have a greater impact in a movie
Filmento I am currently going more and more into filming and how to make a good film, and you are my biggest inspiration, thank you so much!!! I love your videos!!!
Im crying for all the tips youve given...
Marvel puts way more effort in their movie trilogies than DC, that is why DC will always be behind
Also, including the Wilhelm scream will add a bit of _jais ne se quois_ to virtually any setting.
What's the twist in Calibre? I just watched the movie and it seemed pretty straight forward to me so I'd like to know what the twist was because I didn't get it
Yes.
Great yes.
I have to wonder: you covered Tony and Steve's perspectives. What's Bucky's objective in this scene?
ruclips.net/video/wWuCfUGM_4U/видео.html Another amazing scene is Murray’s confrontation in Joker.
Current objective: Survive
So weird. I just decided to watch Copland yesterday after 23 years.
WAS THAT A MISSION IMPOSSIBLE SCENE WHERE DUDE GOT ZAPPED BY THE LIGHTNING? HOLY S*1T

Can we just appreciate how the shoutout to Skill Share was in the Payoff chapter after being introduced in the Intro chapter
I think the perfect movie scene is Curtis meeting wilford in snowpiercer and the ending of that movie
