For those who have been going crazy, with why this doesnt work for you when you follow the tutorial step by step, there is a space between "bearer " and the concatenated token that follows! It was mentioned in the video though.

Are the variable not stored in local storage exposed in the browser's dev tools?

Variables in a frontend are always exposed in the browser's dev tools. You should not store any private information in a variable in the frontend.
This is not a WeWeb thing, it's a frontend thing.
The difference with local storage is that a variable in local storage saves the variable in the user's browser.
