There’s a moment towards the end of Episode 4 of the Season 4 of The Chosen that has left people so confused. As Jesus sees Zebedee pressing olives, he gets deeply emotional. It is almost as if he is suffering.
Now, Jesus has just come from a really intense and painful conversation with his disciples. But this emotional moment in front of the olive crusher seems to be about something more, something deeper.

I broke in too tears 😢 😭 the olives being pressed with heavy rocks made me think of him bearing the weight of every sin from everyone of us
Yes.
Yes
Thank you for your instruction. 🙌💜
Yes
Wow!! ❤
The way he sees himself being drained of blood, and Gaias comes to give him a hug reminding him why he is doing it.
Heavy! 😢
During the olive press scene and the final hug, I was in tears. it was so powerful and beautiful. That he got what he needed, not from his disciples but from a roman Prator. Jesus was calling to those who needed him most.
He was comforted by the faith of a Gentile, the ones who would accept him as their savior first. The first shall be last and the last shall be first.
I cried too!!
@llgoldstein2710
I agree , Gaius was the one who understood the teachings , he had power already, Gaius believed freely and with pure love .
Even the strongest have moments of fatigue. Jesus certainly demonstrated that at the end of this episode. Looking at the stones pressing those olives symbolizing the enormous stress he was feeling then and in the near future. But I especially liked when Gaius, who doesn't say a single word, notices Jesus is troubled with despair and simply hugs him. Often times in life, it's much more meaningful to simply look and listen rather than thinking of something clever to say. Well done!
Jesus didn't demonstrate anything in the episode because The Chosen doesn't represent the true JESUS.
Gethsemane is translated as The Olive Press, where Jesus feels the weight of the sins upon him before the arrest - even to the extent of sweating blood. I think this scene in the chosen is significant of this.
Thank you for the great explaination
I’ll agree, wonderful insight.
Yup!
A bit to add - Jesus prayed three times in the Garden...like olives were pressed three times, our savior was pressed 3x in the Garden. From what I understand, the first press of olives was used as priestly anointing oil, He is our King anointed, the second used for food (He is the bread of life!) and the third used for lanterns (He is the light of the world)! That scene in S4 E4 was for me the second best ending of any episode (S2 E3 was my favorite). What a great show based on our amazing Lord!
Thank you all for explanations. I have been struggling with the meaning since I watched the episode. The scene bothered me seeing Jesus so upset for what was coming but I couldn't comprehend the meaning of the work Zebedee was doing get to Jesus so severely. Now I need to review the process of this scene. Thank you again
That was much more painful to me than the one with Thomas and Rameh. It was so hard to see him so human, so broken, so dreading the work that he will do without question for his Father.
Same.
same that’s what I thought too😢
@@gradybaby_kv I wasn't moved with the fake Thomas/Ramah drama but this gutted me. You don't need a blood bath or a lot of horror to see pain, to feel pain. Jon nailed it
They shouldn't had included that Thomas had a girlfriend to begin with.I love the Chosen but I have to admit some of the stuff that isn't recorded in the Bible shouldn't had been made to happen in the making of the Chosen.
Yes
Jesus feels the pain he will be suffering as he watches his friends press the olives. His body is the olive - the oil is His blood
Thats what I thought
@@kimlaurinda261 Myself as well
I agree.
Exactly how I interpreted that scene.
I agree
Episodes 4-6 of this season were soul-stirring, as so many episodes are. But in these episodes, the movement toward Jesus' fulfillment of the prophecies seems to create a new pace for the viewer to keep up with and absorb. The range of emotions and quick shifts in those emotions is everywhere in these episodes. And, we see so many perspectives on what is happening. It's outstanding. More than anything, Jonathan's ability to portray the range of emotions is anointed. This is truly one of his callings. And, the ending of episode 4 brought me to tears. What a moment! That was a moment where the need was great, and the comfort came from an unexpected source of faith.
Exceptional reply!
Beautifully said!
Well said
What a perceptive and thought-provoking commentary 👌 It is almost unbelievable the talent that is portrayed by the actors. Obviously, Jonathan Roumie perfectly captures Jesus's character. Especially when delivering lines from scripture, the message in every aspect of his delivery allows the audience grasp the meaning of the words. At the of the emotional rollercoaster of Episode 4, there were handfuls of kleenex all around me. But, my cheeks hurt from smiling. Thank you, The Chosen 👌🙏🏻🤗
He is seeing the olives put under such a weight and he is thinking of the death he will soon face.
Olives
That's what I got put it too
@@user-es9mb8wi3m right olives my bad I edited it. Thanks.
Agree with you.
I agree. That is how I understood it. The wood and ropes-the cross. The wine dripping-His blood!
Thank YOU 🙏 Father GOD for coming to my sister in her time of need , she was admitted to hospital & thinking of her last time to live but in her cry out to Father HE came to her to help her rest & sleep thru the night , she is better today, Thank you 🙏 Father you always hear our prayers & never forsake us ❤❤❤
Please correct me if my interpretation is slightly different. In the last scene, Jesus is sad and troubled, thinking about the cup of suffering that will come in the future. Then, He sees Gaius, who is a Gentile and yet believes in Him. Jesus is reminded that He is doing this for Gentiles as well, so that those who believe will not perish. This comforts Him. 🥺🥺
Thank You Jesus❤ I love you so much🥺
My words exactly. I think it was about his impending suffering and persecution that nobody understood at that time except him. John and James asked his permission to sit at his right and left but they had no idea what Jesus was going to have to do to make that possible or what they were going to have to go through to be his honored disciples. The emotional pain must have been excruciating to Jesus. His human side was in torment. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities... - Isaiah 53:5
@@Vinylfiend60 😓
Gaius went to Jesus and held Him, as if Jesus was 'his' son, holding the back of Jesus head, as one does with their own children...
And Jesus let Himself be comforted 💜
Amen!
😢😢😢😢
I think Gaius, in the last scene when he encounters a sorrowful and suffering Jesus, also has some realization of what might be to come for Jesus. He mentioned with Peter and Matthew that Rome wants Jesus gone. He recognized that Jesus also knows this, which is why I think that hug was so meaningful…comforting him for the suffering that is now and to come.
Agree
My takeaway was His own crushing. He sees as more rocks added goes back to when He says you don't understand what you're asking.
The crushing weight of the sin of the world ALL at once
Gethsemane means THE OLIVE PRESS. Christ knew he would take upon himself our sins. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed and sweat great drops of blood as he began to take our sins upon Him self. He knew He would do this and His reaction to the olive press is so bittersweet. What makes this scene so wonderful is that He needs a hug and it's Gius who gives it to Him.❤😢❤
Yes! That's why we saw that momentary closeup of his sweaty forehead.
I love The Chosen so much
Me too
That hug from Gaius reminded Jesus again that someone still gets it.
The REAL Jesus didn't have to be reminded about anything.
@SpiritLevel888 Yes of course, but I am referring to the show.
In reality, because Jesus knows, Jesus feels the heartache everyday since many of us still don't get it.
This episode made me cry. To see Jesus so sad and disappointed. Heartbreaking.
Yes! Holy Spirit decernment was on point. I fall more in love with the trinity as I read the word and seeing it thru The Chosen series has enlightened me to new levels of His great love towards us. None of us are worthy, But God!!! ❤ press into Him .
If you had Holy Spirit discernment you'd reject "the Chosen" outright.
Agonizing indeed. Watching yesterday, I was overcome with the realization of how alone he was in his suffering. It seemed like Gaius was sent by his Father, in that anguished moment, to give him true love and faith in Him.
Such a powerful episode. May we all be humbled.
I as a born again Christian was very much aware of these points. Thank you for breaking this down for new Christians and those who may not believe yet.
Thank you Pastor Brandon.
Again ready for explaining another The chosen episode 4 from season 4
Always ready with explanation as a teacher ready when he enters a classroom full of students.
God bless you!✝️🌹🇨🇦
Hey Brandon. Thanks for your insights about the olive press. The scene that caught my attention was when Gaius arrived home. What caught my eye was his extinguishing of the candles at the household shrines to his pagan gods -- extinguishing the candles is an act of disowning these false gods. He is expressing that he now believes in and worships Jesus, whom he now owns as his God. This could be seen as an extension of his calling Jesus "Lord / Dominus", because his former loyalty was to Caesar as his dominus for Caesar also claimed to be a "son of god." As St. Paul states in 1 Corinthians, no one can call Jesus Lord except by the Spirit of God. Hallelujah! Jesus is Lord!!!
I am SO VERY HAPPY that I now can watch The CHOSEN on U-TUBE. I am 92 years young and don't get to a Theater. Thank you Dallas Jenkins and Crew for this EXCITING SEASON !!!
Thank you for your work!! I knew there was a huge connection between the olives being pressed and Jesus being so upset. The fact that Gaius was able to comfort him was BEAUTIFUL. LORD comforts Lord. awesome!!!!
Touching.....yet amazing from India
Thank you for your explanation of this scene. It is such a beautiful and touching moment. I believe you are spot on in describing what is happening at the end of this episode. It is a foreshadowing of what is coming in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus’ intense suffering will cause drops of blood to come from his pores. He took upon himself the weight of the sins and sorrows and suffering of all mankind. It’s incomprehensible to imagine that kind of pain.
I loved that Gaius found him in that moment. He was like the Angel that came to Jesus while he was in the Garden and strengthened him. Gaius was also representing each and every one of us who Jesus suffered for and gave his life. It must’ve been a comforting reminder to Jesus that this was who he was atoning for and that we were worth it. He is what makes us worthy. ❤
I believe Gaius asking Jesus to heal his son is the most important moment in the series, thus far...
Yes, it took a while, but the moment was very moving. I thought the death of Rameh, not so much, we didn't need that or having Thomas broken after they used so much of the scripts to have the public get to know her and then see her die. That was very moving and being Catholic and hearing the words he says on his knees, before we have communion ,gave me goosebumps.
Jesus stated it, a gentile having more faith in him than his own deciples.
That Healing And Salvation Was For The Gentile People Too
@@SherryONeill For everyone..
Thank you for another wonderful explanation...we need to know so much of His last days!
Well done , we've all. Got to step up ..
Really appreciate your insights. Thank you for your great explanation of the deeper meaning here.
I appreciate your always bringing in scripture & using original words in the explanations of each episode.
Yet another excellent job, and your love of and excitement about the Bible is so evident. Thank You
I’m think that Jesus is thinking about what He’ll have to go through. After all this time with His disciples and they still don’t get Him. That’s hurts Jesus very deeply.
I noticed the foreshadowing of the Savior’s suffering as you did, but the scene also foreshadows the angel who comforted Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane in the character of Gaius, who appears and comforts the Savior in his grief.
I knew you’d explain this, Brandon. Thank you
Thank you Jesus for loving us all so much that you would do the things that you did and went through the things that you did. You wept because we didn't understand how much our sin cost. Thank you Jesus for loving me. Your Mercy is without end.
Well done, Brandon Robbins.
That final sequence is so incredibly powerful. For me, with the imagery of the press and Jesus' emotional reaction to what it represents to Him, His suffering on our behalf couldn't be more poignantly illustrated. I know The Chosen team will handle the actual Crucifixion masterfully, but this sequence is enough to break my heart with the enormity of what He endured on our behalf. Kudos to The Chosen team for taking us there even before they more literally take us there.

Wow that's nice She makes you that much!! please is there a way to reach her services, I work 3 jobs and trying to pay off my debts for a while now!! Please help me.
Can I also do it??? My life is facing lots of challenges lately
Right at the beginning of the oil press scene as he was looking on at them working together, close friends, lots of love and how they loved Him. I could swear he murmured something about family and I burst into tears. Jesus was human. He had a mom a dad brothers, sisters, friends, followers and the disciples and He was leaving all that. I just felt the humanism in Jesus at that moment where I thought how sad it had to be to know you’re going to die and leave his family.
He sees His blood spilled
Fantastic explanation!!! ✝️🙏
The directing and storytelling this season is just so amazing, it has to be The Holy Spirit.
I see that last hug between Gaius and Jesus as a representative of the Gentiles strengthening and thanking Jesus for what He is about to do - sacrifice Himself for many, to include Gentiles.
Thank you, my friend
Yes it was definitely Jesus feeling the crushing weight of his suffering as it gets closer
I was happy that I did understand it. To get the good oil for anointing there is an extreme crushing. Your calling will crush you
Great video man .
That makes sense now ❤
Thank you so much for your input on the end of S4- E4. It was so helpful. Jesus is in pain already. It is heartbreaking! 😢
I am really thankful for this explanation. There is so much going on in some of these scenes that it’s hard to process it all. Thank you so much.
I heard Dallas say his vision for the final embrace was a visual picture of the Lion and the Lamb lying down in peace together!
I felt he was imagining or KNOWING how HE was going to be 'crushed' by the Romans and his persecutors... and the juice running, his blood...... it was very upsetting and a tear- jerking moment.
Thank you so much for this. In the short video you’ve given any more insight into the mind Jesus did anybody ever has.
That ending was an agonizing moment. To me, the oil being pressed represented His blood while the three stones added to the press individually represented three nails. That's what I thought while watching this scene. Am I wrong?
Another significant aspect of the olive-pressing scene is that Gaius, as a Roman officer, knew what was coming and could see that Jesus knew it as well. The two men (Jew and Gentile/oppressor and oppressed/executioner and executionee) sharing so much emotional pain is powerful.
Thank you for the clarification!! I understood most of the episode. But the last scene; I didn't understand.
Thank you! It's all awesome! ♡♡♡
I love this episode so much. So many things to reflect on and enjoy.
It is so absolutely wonderful to see so many people really know what that scene was about. It is just awesome. ❤❤❤
When I first saw in the theater, I told my husband that Jesus is thinking about what is coming up while he is watching the Olives being crushed.
In the crushing… it’s the crushing (the suffering) that produces the oil (the anointing) this was my favorite scene 🙏🏼❤️🔥
He is disheartened because soon they will carry on His teachings when He no longer walks the Earth and their questions show they still have ego and ego is what they are revolting against
Thank you for explaining this in a way that's easy to understand!
Thank you, Pastor Brandon! You help me to understand so much. I thought that Jesus was thinking that the olive oil dripping is foreshadowing for his blood dripping.
Yes the valuable olives are Him. Yes, l was in tears watching Him weeping.
I loved this! Thank you!!!
During that scene I knew that Jesus saw what was coming to him. It was amazingly done and amazingly sad. I’m so thankful for my Lord Jesus Christ and what he did for me.
He knows he will soon be crushed by the weight of all of the sins, sorrows, and injustices of the world.
John the Baptist summed up the whole point of discipleship: "He must become greater; I must become less."
Thankyou for this explanation. It al went right over my head🤦🏻.
Thank you, this is what I didn't understand. The symbolysm of the olive oil and the weights. The teaching is amazing
Thanks for this God bless
Would of loved to hear your take on Gaius embrace and moment with Jesus.
I think he knew what the Lord is going to do, thus pointing to the gentiles revelation of the Christ ?
My favorite scene in the episode, lots of different Interpretations but what I got is obviously Jesus DREADED the cross, he was human! He knew what he had to do and he dreaded it. The disciples were frustrating him and not understanding and he obviously felt alone watching the Olive press, and then Gaius comes back and reminds him almost the true importance of the reason why he is to die on the cross for our sins, the redemtion of man
The book of Isaiah chapter 53:5 He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him, and by his wound we are healed. Jesus was thinking of you and me. ❤
thank you
I think this is a beautiful and possibly spot on explanation of what Jesus may actually have been experiencing at that time in his ministry. ❤
I was doing so well, until the end when Jesus tried to fake a smile at Gaius, then him understanding, then them hugging. That was sad😢
Yes, the olives represent Him as he will be crushed and give all…for us.
This is so eye opening and explains a lot thank you
When I was watching it, I was thinking of the wine press of God, and even the translation of Gethsemane as “The Olive Press.” The wine press refers to the wrath of God upon unbelievers, now although Jesus wasn’t an unbeliever or a sinner, during the crucifixion He (His humanity) was treated as such as He was imputed with the sins of all believers. And the Olive Press is obviously where Jesus began to feel the imputation of all the sins of believers.
Thank you for explanation…I was trying to fine out just what that scene meant!
...but after all that, Gaius was there to let him know at least the message is getting through, and there is hope. This is the division he causes. Some people see it, and some don't. This is how to separate the good fish from the bad.
I love your explanations….Thank you so much.
When I seen this part of Jesus looking at jebediah smashing the olives and at the Marion the first thing I thought of was he's going to miss them terribly when he's gone. That reality is hitting him that he is going to leave this Earth soon and how he's going to miss them all , and you can tell in other scenes that he's getting a little bit more aggressive in his tone towards the apostles
The pressure which was created while making the oil out of the olives refers to the pressure of sins that will come upon Jesus in future.
I loved the explanation of Gethsemane
This scene also made me think of:
Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty
Is it foreshadowing of what will come at the end of the age and Christ is upset because he knows that if his people do not understand, his wrath will be poured out on them. Like the emotion comes from he knows that not all his children will be saved and it’s weighing heavy on him?
Yes I also thought of this verse. which is to come
"He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty" reminds me of the line in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic": "He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored." Probably where Julia Ward Howe got it from.
Great video Brandon, thanks for the insights. Love from Brasil.
In the garden as he suffered Christ described the suffering as causing myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore.
The three times he prayed in the garden increased the suffering such that in the end he experienced hematohidrosis to the extreme. The following hours mocking, beating etc added to the suffering. And upon the cross the suffering intensified.
All this so that he the Son of God might take upon him the sins of his people.
I struggled through two seasons of the Chosen and share my take on it
Hello Brandon. I watched on my newer phone. This older phone is super slow but watching anyway 😀
This is exactly what I thought at that end scene.
good explanation brother
Thanks for this video.
I believe the path of the disciples reflects the typical church attendee. Even though these guys had a relationship to Jesus, spent time with Him, they still did not GET IT! When I was on a mission trip to Nigeria, the powerhouses of faith (wow! What glowing faces they had), would approach me and wanted to know whether I was a Christian OR a believer. Believers "get it" and have paid a dear price in the obtaining that Spirit. So I don't fault the disciples for not seeing The Kingdom of Heaven.
The pressing of the olives represented the start of Jesus' passion in the Garden of Gethsemane, an olive tree orchard. The pressing represents Jesus' torture 😢
I love your insight brother
One of the parts of episode 4 that Mr. Robbin’s, as a Protestant, completely misses is what the gentile/pagan Gaius says to Jesus after Gaius says “Lord”. Gaius’ complete statement is “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. Only say the word and my child will be healed”. In the Catholic Church, right before receiving the Eucharist (the Real Presence), Catholics repeat those exact words but turning it to our broken selves by saying “my sole” rather than “my child”. I’m not insisting all must believe in the Real Presence. I’m just giving my own opinion on one aspect of the deep and Biblically based beauty of the Catholic Church. You may choose to disagree, and that’s ok. I respect all persons’ journey to become closer to God. The statement “Lord, only say the word…” is just one part of my journey.
He knew he was going to be crushed like those olives, because that was the will of his father
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer. Isaiah 53:10
