I discovered this about 1 year ago and it has intrigued me ever since.
After coming home from a large grocery shop, I thought that I would add up only the dollar amounts on the receipt to see how close they came to the actual total dollar amount, which of course would include the cents.
It was just one of those situations where I can't explain to you why I thought this would be a thing to try, but I did.
I was lucky to get the formula behind the calculation right on the first go.
Anyways, since it worked on the first receipt I checked, I've ended up doing this to every grocery shopping receipt since and I find it amazing how consistently the addition falls to within $1 of the total receipt, even on very large receipts.
Now, this is all a bit of fun, so don't take it too seriously, but I do think that there is something going on here. How can this be so consistent when there are so many items that have cent amounts all the way up to .49c?
