50 years ago when I was all of about 21 or 22 and I played along Broadway the town was 100% Country Music. If you knew Merle Haggard songs you wouldn't starve to death. Also Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, and classic country like Hank Williams senior ect ect. That's how I learned was by artist. They wanted to hear certain artists songs. The town was 100% country music in those days so you didn't have to look beyond it. In my personal life I was a Led Zeppelin fan but they'd run you out of Nashville for that back then. I played around there about 8 or 9 years. If you're wondering yes, I'm an old guy!
Tory Slusher is great, but so is Tim. Let the young man take his own path . Not everyone has to be a two handed savant. Tim, love your channel, keep on keeping on, you sound great 👍
Tim, huge kudos to you for making content like this. I had originally moved to Nashville in 2017 and lived there until 2021, which I had basically decided Nashville was too hard to tackle and that I would never get the exposure I need for a full time career in music. I now live out of state, but will be moving to Murfreesboro August 2025 to give it another shot playing at Pucketts in Rutherford county. Again, thank you for these valuable videos.
Hey Tim! New subscriber here. Love everything you’re doing with the RUclips channel. The gig vlogs are so much fun and honestly really informative. I’m primarily a guitar player and vocalist, although I dabble in bass as well as banjo. I’ve been playing guitar for just over 11 years. Currently 24 years old. Ive reached a point in my life where I’ve realized that I will never be able to forgive myself if I don’t give music everything I’ve got. I’ve always been serious about my playing, and I’ve been playing in different acts for years, but I know it’s time to move on. With emotional and financial support from those in my life who matter most, I’m planning on moving to Nashville to pursue playing full time. I’ve got just over a year to prepare. Would you recommend hustling on broadway as an effective way to start building confidence and relationships in the scene? Really value your content and time, man. Travel safe, and greetings from NC💛✌️
Hey thanks. This is super helpful because I really want to dive into learning country music on guitar since i've been playing classic rock\blues and some metal for 8 years and it's a good way to expand my style
Whats up man, I like your vids & laid back vibe :) Have you done any / much recording up there yet? I'd like to record some songs but not sure I want to travel to Nashville, I would think there would be some ways to do it by passing files back and forth, but don't really know ppl that do that. Thx!
I just use fender mediums. I think a guitar that you like and feel comfortable with is key. Then a good amp if you're going the amp route, a Blues Jr. is a great place to start!
@@TimAvenMusic thank you for the quick reply. I’m getting ready to make the jump back from acoustic to electric & haven’t been sure which route to take as a mostly country music fan. Definitely looking at a fender tellie. Thank you also for the advice on picks, sometimes I feel like electric guitar & acoustic guitar are completely different instruments.
Hey Tim, I think sometime in the past you had a bad experience with "welcome to the jungle". You mentioned it a couple of times, just curious. I have a bunch of songs like that. Congrats on 10K subs. Cheers!!!😎
Tim do you use the same tone live that you use on your RUclips videos? Or do you have to tweak it to the room? Listening to this the guitar has a lot of low fullness to it but on stage it seems like you would get rid of a lot of that. Your opinion your thoughts?
My best advice for musicians moving to Nashville: STAY AWAY FROM LOWER BROADWAY!!!! DO NOT GET SUCKED INTO THAT CRAP FROM THOSE BAR OWNERS! Find people to write with, record with people even if it's at somebody's house or garage. Play anywhere but lower Broadway.
@@bks252 Absolutely! What do you have? I have an S500 that's about 20 years old, a blues boy and a legacy tribute, I put the high-end tuners and a JB Jr in the bridge.
Great video Tim. I`m a solo artist .Singer guitarist, looking to head down from Arizona soon . Your info is invaluable. Would love to hook up when i get into town. Appreciated

"You're gonna fall on your face. That's how it goes sometimes."
Truer words were never spoken.
Dude you don’t give yourself enough credit you’re a great guitarist!
Hey thank you so much!!
Can you please put a link to playlist in the description?
Glad someone sheds light on the business side of a hustling musician
Thank you!

I always thought I would not know enough of them, but I have a ton of these from playing pubs and weddings!
That's how Ashley McBryde started out and many others...this video is awesome. Thanks for your time Tim
Great video. Preciate the tips brother
Thank you! Hope it helps!
Very well played and great sound my friend!🎸Keep it up!!

Definitely great songs to learn. I think most of these are pretty universal. I’m in South Louisiana and we play all the same stuff.
You're reading my mind! I've been looking at moving down and was wondering what would be a great set of things to come prepared!

Thank you! Will do!
Good playing there, Tim. 👍
Another great video!
Lots of good songs. I’d focus on this just to have an entertaining playlist for when im hanging w friends
That tele is sweeeet dude!
Any advice on getting a good tone that’s affordable? Also, what kind of picks do you recommend?

Dang Tim it’s not been that cold in Nashville. You making me sweat wearing that long sleeve shirt. 😅
I keep the house cold! Haha thanks for watching and commenting!
The key to getting gigs is knowing a ton of songs.
I agree, got to start somewhere though!
Nice ultra tele!:)
Thanks!!

Yes! I absolutely modify the tone depending on the room, and in a full band context most of the time I need less low end.

I don’t disagree with this, but if you want to make any money when you’re first starting out Broadway can be a great beginning option
can you share your set list with us
I will post one in a post!

By the way I am a G&L player and have been for 20 years. I have one Gretch for Church.
Me too. I have several. Great guitars. George and Leo got it right.

What amp are you playing thru?Prs Archon?
came here from the Brad shoutout
General rule of thumb. If you’re in this business listen to pop music and know your theory and you’ll be fine.
Intro sounds like gunpowder & lead
I only know 2.5 chords but I have some good dirty songs I've written.
G&L baby
Hi Tim
Hello!

Love this thing!
Ok, pick in the mouth armature move.

As if the world needs more Nashville guitar players. 🤣
Remember guys, with this mindset you won’t be one. Don’t be afraid to jump in and carve out your own space if it’s something you want to do!!
