- Here I present a series of photographs of Macau taken 40 years ago. The skyline has since changed beyond all recognition.
These photographs are a fascinating look back at a time when Portugal still ruled the peninsular, Chinese gunboats patrolled the waters around Macau and high rises and mega-casinos were yet to arrive.
I was born in Macau but left my birth place in 1967, this is the Macau that buried in my memories. I went back to Macau twice but sadly most of my boyhood images are no longer there. Thank You so much for sharing these wonderful pictures.
You are most welcome, Andy. Thanks for your visit .
Warm greetings! Nigel
These photos bring me right back live to the 70's Macao! Proud to be born and raised in Macao! Nigel is an excellent photographer and you must have had very professional camera and lens to be able to shoot those photos in the 70's!
When the life was plain and meaningful ! when Macau had its unique romentism, where the Chinese and the Portuguese culture lived in a perfect harmony and symbiosis, from which had arised the native Macanese Culture ! Juat love that old Macau !

Sounds wonderful...... not everything changes for the best in the name of progress. Still I really liked the old town which has retained much of its character, I think.. Nigel
仍然喜歡60年代澳門 純樸嘅生活, 踏實的澳門人。🤔👍
Thank you for sharing these old photos. They bring back memories of those years. Yes it's a place where East met West and managed to co-exist in harmony for hundred of years. All he new huge buildings took away the natural charm in the name of progress.
I am delighted you enjoyed the video, Anna. Thank you very much. The charm and lovely winding streets in the "old town" are delightful. Please, for the sake of future generations, these are not torn down. That I would call a tragedy not progress! Good day! Nigel
Nigel, thanks very much for this piece of history, he is very charming!
Thank you very much Natasha. A good end to my movies of Macau, I think. Nigel
This is the Macau that I fondly remember from my childhood and teenage years. Although I left many years ago, I cannot stop going back every few years just to see the old, admire the new and especially eat the food from my favourite restaurants. Love the food!
Our pleasure!
My childhood simple and peaceful
When I was watching these pictures . l missed my mom so much !
Maravilha de produção retratando a Macau antiga. Percebe a arquitetura portuguesa, muito visível nas construções, que por sinal, muita semelhança com o Brasil, por ser o mesmo Colonizador.
I been there before the skyscraper s and casinos,it was so quiet and beautiful.
And for once someone choses the perfect music for his video,s. Thank you for uploading these images of a wonderfull beautifull place now no more..
Thank you very much!
Wow, awesome photo. There are many high buildings here in Macau, huge casinos everywhere, numbers of vehicles and tourists on road and streets, it's big different than before.
Anyway, historic photo brings us back to the lovely place, where i am living.

Hello! I visited Macau last year for a week! I found these photographs on my return when I was doing some research. I like the old city very much and so different from the "casino district" .I should very much like to return. If you wish I have a playlist of the movies I made whilst there last year. Than k you. for your attention. Nigel
Looking at the clips reminds me of a Camel cigarettes commercial made in 70s depicting an young man in leather jacket riding around in a chopper-style motorcycle (and smoking, of course, on the stops of various scenic spots). People thought it was shot in southern Europe. But it was actually Macau.
Memories are our life that has passed and is not coming ... Nice video:
Thank you Mircea. I think the old city of Macau has changed for the better, I like the place very much. Nigel
Thank you very much. I missed my home a lot. Do you have any photos of Coloane that you can share?
No, sorry
The small town vibe, now this is all replaced by money, pollution, and crowed people.
Back in the 80's as a little child myself walking with my grandpa, I do miss those good old days.
Still, I found much to enjoy away from the "strip"..
Hi I live in macau and I am a kid and I was unexpected macau was that old before:)
Grato por partilhar!👍
A fine collection of photographs, Nigel. I've never been to Macau, but I can imagine how it has changed because I've seen similar in other places. Nice music, too. Like 72 from me.
If you get the chance, you should go to Macau. The old town still, retains its winding streets, quaint buildings and Portuguese influences. I love it.... Warm greetings! Nigel
Looks far more interesting then the combination of East and West in Hong Kong. Chinese and Portuguese architecture blend pretty well.
寧靜小城,南歐風光,比現時好得多,落後古舊得來有格調
how wonderful and melancholy at the same moment..... a last moment before globalized modernism took hold and pushed out the
vestiges of another, simpler, perhaps better time....
Thank you, I am pleased you enjoyed looking at these photos. Warm greetings!
很好的拍攝,謝謝你的分享!
Eu cheguei a Macau em 1964 como tal conheci bem a cidade como era na altura
