    I had my expectations low, but to be honest, this was a much better one than last year's. Sure, it doesn't really have much in terms of games, but we were told that upfront, unlike last time which was all about crushed dreams. And instead we got the announcement of Digimon Seekers, a really interesting looking web novel as well as a cool new Digimon.

      @@ericschauer5950 I agree we should've at least gotten a teaser for the next story game, unless it's not actually even coming this year... maybe its coming next year. You've got to remember too that these franchises don't really make money off the games or at least not as much money as they get off the cards and anime. Still, they probably should have pulled a Nintendo and done a teaser like they did for breath of the wild 2 five years in advance

    The Con was pretty much what I expected what it was going to be looking at the schedule. Sincerely, for me, just the concert segments made it worth it, but if you're a english dub only boy, I don't think you can share the feeling.
    And here's the thing about the Con: It's not necessarily supposed to be a news event, but a community driven one. It is, indeed, a Digimon _Con_ and not a Digimon Direct. For that we have the DigiNavi, which happen from time to time, at multiple points of the year.
    This kind of interview is the something you'd usually see at a con. I do think last year's was more interesting since it had people from the actual production team talking about the behind the scenes, and I wouldn't have it be right at the beginning either, but you can't blame them for having this kind of content.
    Right now what the Con is missing the most, in my opinion, is the social aspect this kind of event usually have. And they can't fully replicate that with an online-only approach.

    • @taso8774
      @taso8774 Год назад +2

      Hey Douglas!
      You bring up a good point by distinguishing between English watchers and sub watchers.. it's a global event but we're only seeing interviews from the Japanese side. I could see myself being very interested if there was an interview with Steve Blum or something for how he went about directing Tamers in English. In that regard, I feel like the side of the fandom that's more familiar or nostalgic towards the dub are missing out on the con aspect of Digimoncon. And at that point, all we have left is news.
      I'm familiar with both dub and sub, but admittedly I didn't get into the sub side of things until much later so I don't have the same nostalgia there. Thinking about it from the perspective of my Steve Blum example, I could easily see how this event would be more enjoyable for the Japanese audience.

    • @Douglas628
      @Douglas628 Год назад +2

      The dubs in my country are usually closer to the original, so it was pretty easy for me to migrate to the subs.
      Overall I think content based the japanese version should take precedence over the others because it's not only the source material, but also the most recognizable version. It'd be cool to VAs from other dubs in the event though.
      People often say stuff like "Global" or the "West" but a lot of them forget that thoses aren't just the States. They're going out of their way to give english subs to a mainly japanese event, thing no other language is getting, and they still saying they don't care.
      It's just like when they were demanding a dub for Survive like it's the bare minimum. When I see this kind of behavior I am just left here thinking that these people are not only spoiled, but they deserve less.

    On one hand yeah it didn't show much. But on the other hand it was pre-recorded and they had a schedule telling you exactly what was gonna be shown and when, besides the special announcement of Digimon Seekers. I only watched the 25th Anniversary Project segments. My friends and I were baffled and couldn’t figure out what it was. I took away that they’re releasing a novel to coincide with their Vital Bracelet. They’re making lore for their fit bit.
    Also super upset that their comic/manga contest is Japan only, I would have loved to come up with something.

      i agree about the manga contest. The moment i knew bout it months ago, i started drafting multiple one-shots manga. Making new setting, concept and whole storyline... i was excited about the contest detail that will be announced in the con. Only to know that it's limited to Japan only. Though I understand that it's difficult for them to manage the manga serialization if the winner is living outside of Japan. But at least inform about the stipulation early when they released the news months ago...

Maybe they are in the works of making a new game, but they don't have enough to show us. So, while I'd like to hear about more games, I'd rather wait and see what they've got later. As for the rest of the con, I liked it. I like that they are paying attention to all of the different parts of the franchise and giving them their time in the spotlight.

As much as I liked the behind the scenes stuff from it, a lot of it last year were saying no to ports and remakes and people didn't really like that section from what I remember. More than likely, they don't really have any news to share about video game stuff so may as well focus on advertising Digimon World Next 0rder to people, and I could see them being a bit nervous about saying anything too early after the whole debacle with Survive.

    I think the main thing is that they are doubling down on their origins. The Vital bracelet, a new novel, the TCG doing really well. Digimon Con was an event full of heart and charm. Just because the specific thing tou wanted wasn't there doesnt mean it was bad. There was a ton of news about various aspects of the franchise and several once-in-a-lifetime segments.

      They said last year they weren't ready to show us or tell us much about the 02 movie and they still haven't told us anything, people hold hope for Digimon Con because they are radio silent almost all year so when they announce this event then yeah we should get something

    I can't see how Digimon can appeal to Pokemon fans, even with similarities they're not the same, I understand the heavy Japan focus since its tradition that japanese games focus heavily on their national market since its part of their game philosophy to appeal to their own, a lot of devs have said they acknowledge the western fans, but they don't intend to change their philosophies to appeal to us, thats kinda a double edge sword since they take it too far in the marketing aspect, like ok in Japan its easier to sell out extra material 'n all, but mixing it in a global event is bad for pr imo, it will only make the non japanese fans angry with all the content n material they can't have, unless importing it, you don't attack your audience in any way if you want to maintain them, ATLUS do it a lot as well, I don't think they should change their games to appeal to global standard, but they should make accessible for western fans to have as much material as the japanese fans, even if is in small scale to avoid any possible flop due cultural reasons, I mean Pokemon somehow managed to get merchandise worldwide while still having lots of Japan only content, but I'm sure everyone would enjoy to have the same treatment Japan has with those extra appeals

    Yeah, I think you were putting way too much expectation on what this was. Even after the fact that they put out their schedule online to let everyone know what they were going to show, you even made a video on that schedule. The segments were all for Digimon fans, not just video game fans, if you took a look at the live chat you'd see people from all over getting hyped over each segment. The interviews, the live music and even the tcg matches! It didn't have anything you wanted to see, so it's fair to say you were disappointed, but as a Digimon fan overall, I was not. I'm happy to see it branch out and not get relegated to just video games. The convention aspect was meant to bring ALL fans together, not just one type.

They're the master of stall, filler and merch shilling. It's unfortunate but that's the reason I honestly stopped watching any JP livestream.
    Also the Digimon TCG is pretty dope, like surprisingly one of the best and well structured game that's both easy to start but hard to master. Especially after what happened with Survive and the massive delays. I feel people were so pushy about Survive despite being told the little info we had, and when it finally came, people ragged on it. Sure, you disappoint people in not announcing anything, but you also won't give anyone's hopes up if you don't promise anything either.
    Regardless, I feel this year's Digicon was better than last years. Lots of merchandise and cards stuff. People can say what they want about the interviews with VAs and stuff, but I feel it's important since the animes make up a good chunk of digimon.

    • @BladeSerph
      @BladeSerph Год назад

      I mean its kind of the problem with a long-running series hitting those ruts and trying to do stuff to stay popular. I may not really follow Digimon that often anymore these days, but gonna be honest, due to how Survive came off, i think it would of been better if they didnt announce it so early on and had things more polished out, preferably focus on getting the combat systems in place, THEN have the visual novel portions done after which they could of probably did the announcement then, where it would of not been much work to do then, with just artwork, VAs, storytelling and so on.
      Doesn`t help that Digimon on the V.G. side of things has always dominantly followed a `monster raising` focus, even the ones that do not have an actual farm still had it in the form of affection and of course evolving thru multiple stages of evolution, more on a gameplay side element instead of a story-driven one. So Survive being LITERALLY a Digimon-version of a Super Robot Taisen game, but watered down, in terms of structure on a number of ends didnt really help either, even before you include the delay problems.
      If they have to push any games or material, i hope they instead focus on much smaller projects that do not require extensive development and focus on its core more then trying to do any big amazing wow-zer projects...maybe take a page out of the older era Digimon games (like the worlds series), go with a stand-alone type stories, could blend well with genres that have become popular...
      Since i think many would get behind a Digimon title that focuses on a Rogue-like style which Digimon world 2 sort-of did with dungeon crawling, maybe a budget title that could focus on the TCG if they want a easy way for some people to get interested in that, sort of like what they also did back in the day also for another PS1`ish era game.
      Never the less, not announcing anything is a good idea, but it can of course have the adverse effect to make one think its a dying franchise if they keep celebrating it but not having anything new out to keep promoting it. Hence how i feel that the Dot Hack Franchise is getting dragged thru the mud with them promoting it via merchandise but anything media wise has not seen anything new besides maybe that G.U. collection bundle...The fun of a problematic multi-layer standard i guess in that regard...

I love the TCG but even then I don't care to see people play with off meta decks, as an anime and game fan I felt let down, my only thought on why we didn't get any new game is they don't wanna take away from the release period for Next Order and will wait till after, but if thats the case why not postpone Digimon Con

    bandai japan has been ignoring the rest of the world for quite a long time. it honestly feels masochistic to support digimon and bandai as a whole. there is bandai US, but it really feels like they don't receive enough resources or respect from their parent company since they keep having to release products that were already produced in japan, leading to situations like the vital hero being announced the same day as the vital brace BE.
    so the sad truth is that bandai probably wont branch out because they either don't believe in the international market or their not big enough to take it on. and honestly, i would say they're not "good" enough with their constant oversights

    Cycling between a Story and a virtual pet sim (World) game every 2 years, giving each game a total of 4 years development time, would be a great way to go. It'd keep Digimon relevant and appease most of the fans of the genre. They also really need an online version of TCG because it's good enough to get a decent audience but it needs that ease of access and exposure. In fact, with every new game release they should tie a code for a special card in the online version of the game, creating a little digimon ecosystem that rewards you for buying all their products. It's consumerism 101 and idk why they're sleeping on it

    I said this in the livestream and ill repeat myself here.
    Digimon ABSOLUTELY could and should be a pokemon competitor, even more so than it was in the 90s, if Bandai actually gave enough of a shit about the IP and brand. It fills a more mature niche desperately craved in the pokemon (and monster taming in general) community and Bandai refuses to strike the iron while its hot.

    A bit funny how it seems Digimon’s strength is also it’s weakness with Digimon Con. Digimon has survived all these years by existing in a variety of mediums and genres. But when it’s all gathered for a single presentation, parts of it wind up losing our interest because it’s not the part we care about.

    Shame it wasn't better for you, and I don't have an opinion because... Well I didn't watch it myself. But this is why I follow the advice of SuperDerek and hype responsibly. Just lower my expectations and just watch. It makes watching any form of Direct much more enjoyable! Although I might have to cover the nearby chat...
    From the sound of it though with Digimon here, I would have been disappointed with the lack of gaming news. Heard some good things about the TCG though!

    Tha sad truth is that Bandai does not believe in Digimon, i think they are probably afraid to go to hard on Digimon because they migth believe Pokemon took all the space the market had for this kind of content. Its a shame that they dont realize they do not have to compete with Pokemon, Digimon is its own thing and could perfectly coexist as being Pokemom more mature sibling. Oh, well, maybe one day... Until them i guess i have to be happy with the Next Order port, at least the game is new to me so its gonna be fun to play it for the first time.

    Four hours was way too long. It didn't feel like they really had content for that time. Sure they had lots of songs but I feel like that was just padding. They could have easily made a Nintendo Direct type video and have it be 30 minutes and that probably would have been enough time to cover anything important.

    Idk wtf happened to Digimon. These idiots just have to make a digimon world game but just let you create your own character. Jeez am I so sick of Japanese games forcing me to play pathetic MC’s. That’s partially why fire emblem engage is getting such a lukewarm reception across the board. They should make world a game for all
    Players and then make other digimon games character and story focused. Digimon should not be a hard IP to get into. It’s so ridiculous. For all the awful Pokémon games that come out (sword and shield, scarlet and violet,etc) they still have a decent amount of entry points. Mystery Dungeon, Let’s Go, Legends Arceus. Digimon is lacking in so many ways that it’s embarrassing. I don’t understand why Digimon can’t get the Tales of Arise treatment.
