I find the targeting of Russian athletes to be bizarre in the way people just accept it. They're not Putin, they're not their country, why is abuse towards them even remotely acceptable just for being Russian?

The problem is that sport is heavily sponsored and influenced by the government of Russia, so basically being an athlete means you get support from Russian government hence you need to give something in return, ie your support of war and president. Google pu*in meeting Russian figure skaters, some of them were Olympic champions, and they were taking pics with him, getting his signature, laughing and telling journalists how proud they were, it all happened after February 2022, they are banned fairly
