How Jamie and Poppy Overcame Every Obstacle.
In my years of training dogs, there are stories that touch my heart deeply, and Jamie’s journey with his Doberman puppy, Poppy, is one that I will never forget. Jamie and his family reached out to me, not just for ordinary puppy training but with the goal of preparing Poppy to become a service dog. Jamie’s circumstances were far from ordinary-after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke, he was left with challenges that would make training a dog seem daunting to many. He had lost feeling on his right side, suffered from aphasia, and experienced frequent seizures. Yet, despite these significant obstacles, Jamie’s determination to be actively involved in Poppy’s training was unwavering. His spirit and perseverance were truly inspiring.
From the start, I knew that our standard training program wouldn’t fit the unique needs of this remarkable family. We had to adapt, and quickly. Jamie’s aphasia made traditional verbal commands difficult, so we came up with a tailored plan that relied on non-verbal communication. We introduced a system using a clicker, whistle, and specific hand signals-tools that would allow Jamie to communicate effectively with Poppy without relying on speech. Janet, Jamie’s loving and supportive partner, embraced this approach with enthusiasm. She worked closely with Jamie, attending every training session with him, practicing at home, and ensuring that he had the support he needed to succeed. Janet’s patience and dedication were as inspiring as Jamie’s resilience.
Poppy, being a bright and curious Doberman, took to the training with enthusiasm. But like any puppy, she had her mischievous moments! Yet with every challenge, Jamie and Janet remained committed. Over the course of just six weeks, we saw Poppy transform from a playful pup into a dog that was mastering crucial service dog skills. She learned to respond to Jamie’s hand signals and whistle commands, and more importantly, she began to understand her role in Jamie’s life-providing assistance and companionship.
Watching Jamie and Poppy work together was a beautiful reminder of the incredible bond that can form between a person and their dog, especially in the face of adversity. Every small victory felt monumental, and by the end of our sessions, Jamie had made immense progress, not just in training Poppy but in his own personal growth as well. The sense of accomplishment in both Jamie and Janet was palpable, and it was clear that Poppy had become much more than just a pet-she was a symbol of Jamie’s perseverance, hope, and strength.
This experience was not just about teaching a dog new skills; it was about watching a family overcome obstacles together, leaning on each other for strength, and proving that love and determination can truly conquer all. Working with Jamie, Janet, and Poppy was an absolute honor, and I am grateful to have been part of their journey. Their story is a testament to the power of resilience, and I have no doubt that they will continue to achieve incredible things together. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this unstoppable team and wish them all the best as they continue their amazing journey.

0:48 what's those things on the dogs ears?

The things on the Doberman puppy’s ears are part of the ear-taping process after ear cropping. This helps the ears stand up as they heal and develop. It’s a common practice for Dobermans, done under a vet’s supervision, to give them the signature upright ear look!
