      Update: Got the stainless mako PG trio in the mail and the knives turned out really nicely. The behind-the-edge thickness is very fine, the knives came razor sharp, the fit and finish is very nice-nearly as good as the flawless custom mako. The new util clip sheaths are also nice.
      I think these stainless knives need a kydex sheath, because the knives will hold up in water, but i would hate to ruin the leather sheath in the boat or in the rain. I might have to take stab at making something like the sheath that comes on the s90v version of the benchmade hiddon canyon.

      I agree about 14c28n. You don't hear much about it, prolly cuz edge retention is all some people talk about, but that 14c28n looks like it can do absolutely anything as long as you're willing to strop it occasionally. It looks to me like LC200Ns younger brother... does everything as well except maybe 2/3 of the edge retention.

      The truth is the Vanex is the more rare find here. In two or three years everybody will have a Magnacut blade. Hi. I have a piece of the same approach than you, and I like 3V, 14C28N (price compared with LC200N...), Cruwear, Magnacut and Vanax. On your graphs, CPM 3V have much better corrosion resistance than CPM Cruwear. Thats true? Why?

    • @Creelyblades
      @Creelyblades  Год назад +1

      One of the tricky things with 3V, and cruwear is that there are two different heat treating protocols and one of them significantly changes the corrosion resistance of the steel. 3V would have a little better than cruwear, but maybe on the chart the cruwear is rated at the other heat treating protocol.

    I couldn't help but notice the 14C28N steel was so similar in toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance to the Magnacut. I know charts and graphs often don't tell the whole story.
    How similar are these two steels in real world?
    The Magnacut is intriguing, but the current real world cost is prohibitive, while the 14C28N is quite reasonable in cost and availability.

      14c28n is the best budget, lower edge retention type of stainless steel for knife making. Incredibly tough, good corrosion resistance, very good edge stability, edge retention is okey. Magnacut is less tough, but has a lot better edge retention, even better corrosion resistance and excellent edge stability, it has the edge retention of s30v, but the toughness of 4v and cruwear. that is just absolutly amazing. Also 14c28n has better corrosion resistance and edge retention compared to aebl.

    Why is laser cut steel with a broad tang a benefit? That seems to only be a benefit to the maker and mass production.

    • @Creelyblades
      @Creelyblades  3 года назад +1

      I’m not exactly sure what your criticism is here? When you say broad tang I assume you mean full tang. I don’t think that water jet cutting was being presented as a benefit, simply an explanation of how and why it’s made the way it is. In terms of its benefit to the end-user it allows the knife to be more affordable because of a more efficient process.

    • @brandonnelson4164
      @brandonnelson4164 3 года назад

      @@Creelyblades Auto correct problems :(. I meant proud, the tang is proud of the scales. I do agree on affordability but what’s the benefit you are pointing out in maintenance in the video? Isn’t the primary value to reduce production effort (note I’m all for automating production).

    • @Creelyblades
      @Creelyblades  3 года назад +4

      @@brandonnelson4164 No doubt that efficiency is part of the equation, but there is a bit of a benefit. If I use removable scales and sand the steel and scales flush so they are perfect, and then you remove those scales it is virtually impossible to get them back on perfectly again. There is always a sharp lip somewhere. Making the a little proud and tumbling makes it a lot easier to take the scales on and off and swap them between different blades.

      Several of the steels I do have salt water testing data for, and others are inferred based on their elemental makeup as compared to the tested ones. There are really only about 4 categories of corrosion resistance as I see it. Not stainless at all (aka- 1095, 52100, A2) Semi-Stainless (3V, D2, ) Standard Stainless (S35VN, 154CM, 440C, S90V), and extremely stainless (LC200N, Vanax,) Additionally, even with testing corrosion resistance can be tough to pin down, for instance, some steels do well in salt but not acids, others do well in acids but not salt. I stand by the ratings on the corrosion resistance chart as a good guide for a particular use case.
