IKEA here in Iceland sets up a goat every year, and it was burned every year in honor of the Gävle. Until one year when security had been beefed up so much that no one could get close. That year the goat set itself on fire due to an electrical fault.
I told my son about your video and about this tradition. His reaction was: "It's so cute, why do they burn it?! 😢" followed by "We should go and burn it 🔥 😈" which I think summarizes your video pretty well.
As a person born and raised in Gävle the burning of the goat is one of the most beautiful childhood memories I can remember. The contrast between the dark, cold, harsh winter and the dancing flames showering the surrounding in light and warmth is a memory I’ll forever hold close to my heart.
yea i honestly think at this stage it should be accepted by those who build it that it really is its own tradition now to burn the goat. maybe they should actually just burn the goat anyway if someone doesn't get to it by the end, since it needs to get rebuilt every year either way.
Whenever the goat gets destroyed somehow, or burned, it's funny, but not because you wanna laugh at the goat or laugh at the expense of the people who built it, but rather at the fact that it's happening over and over again like some sort of funny sitcom moment.
Yeah, the frequency at which it gets burned is pretty damn funny, and also the fact that the vast majority of times it's been destroyed, it's been by burning! At some point you gotta stop and think, "Hey. Maybe we shouldn't be using such flammable materials to make this thing that keeps getting burned."
‼️❓ They have to build a new goat every year anyway! So why doesnt the city burn the goat itself in January. Making a thing of it? Otherwise what are they even doing with the goats that aren't burned? Disassembled and thrown in the trash anyway? It would bring in even more tourists and more money if the cities like okay starting now on New Year's Day we will be burning the goats at 8:00 p.m. or whatever. A whole festival would spring up around it and everyone would come out to see it. Like why is the city so set on throwing the goat in the trash?
the jackdaws were just a year to late to get into the video about the history of straw goat destruction, but they did manage to pioneer a new way of doing it.
My good friend who died last Januarys birthday was December 24th. I always felt bad for kids whos birthdays were near Christmas because it basically takes thier birthday away from them and makes it Christmas. My Ex’s Birthday was two days after Christmas and he said he always got less presents than his Sister on Christmas because his parents would save some presents for his birthday.
My best friend who passed away in November of 22 was a 12/24 baby and I'm a 12/30 baby myself. That was one of the reasons we became such fast friends in the first place, through commiserating over our plight of being born so close to Christmas.
My Farmor (grandmother on fathers side), had her birthday and name day on the 24th. The most miserable person I've known all of my life, as a child this was my explanation.
A really funny difference between Denmark and Sweden is that, in Denmark people prank local landmarks and sculptures by knitting giant hats or other funny clothing items to put onto them - while the swedes burn them down.
As an American who only learned of this straw goat 34 minutes ago, it reminds me of a Buddhist sand mandala. There's something special about spending hours, days, weeks, months on a piece of art, only to see it destroyed in a matter of moments. That's not to say that it's good or bad, just that it's special. I can absolutely empathize with the artists being distraught about their burning, just as I can empathize with the primal feeling of wanting to see something flammable in flames.
Compromise does seem like it'd be easy. Stop guarding it quite so hard after Christmas, and if the goat makes it to New Year's have an official burning and count as a win for the Establishment. You can't build something that big, that ephemeral and that flammable without *someone* setting it on fire.
Exactly what i thought, but perhaps that would lose some thrill? You can tell that the town has some conflicting interests with the way it profits from it burning but know they can't condone it.

I listened to a conversation recently on how Disney doesn’t seem quite as magical anymore and people were wondering why and one theory was that most things lack a sense of peril these days. A sense of peril can do a lot to make something more awe inspiring, memorable, and meaningful. I don’t think the goat would be as popular if it ALWAYS burned or NEVER burned. The fact that there are stakes gives it more life. Loved the video!!!

I had a hard day today but watching this for the first time I laughed out loud and felt a little better about everything. I think what I love the most about Gävlebocken is that he always comes back. Whether he is torn down or burned down or put on a barge and towed around the waters of Stockholm, he is never truly destroyed. Skål to you and to Gåvlebocken, and happy almost-birthday!
I hate how this has only 12K views and only O N E T H O U S A N D (???) likes after a year. I fell down a Gävle Goat rabbit hole last year, so wild I never found this video. It's pretty great and I think covers the surprising complexity of 'should we burn a straw goat this year?'
It's fascinating to learn about this but it is also fascinating to compare it to another tradition of your eastern brothers, the Slavs. There is a traditional pagan slavic goddess called Morana. She's associated with the death and rebirth of nature, and with winter. Our tradition is that each year we build human-sized dolls of Morana, carry them to the nearest river (originally, going past every house for the whole village to see), and them light them up in a fire and throw them into the water, thus burning and drowning Morana, and birthing Kostroma, the goddess of fertility associated with spring. Why it's fascinating is that both we and you have a winter tradition of building a figure out of hay, and in both cases it's burnt. But in your case it is unintentional and people are sad that someone did it (but they keep doing it anyway), and in our case they were built to burn from the start, and schoolchildren are often encouraged to light the fire with their own very hands by the teachers, and the burning is the event people look forward to.
Our Boxing day in Britain apparently was first mentioned in 1743 as a day to give gifts to the poor and trades people employees as well who would receive gifts (a "Christmas box"). Nowadays here in the UK it's a bit like black Friday where there's LOTS of sales lol
The straw goat prank made me think of this. When I was growing up, our neighbor bought a tacky lawn gnome and put it in our front yard without telling us. Whenever my mom moved it to see if anyone would claim it, our neighbor would sneak over and put it back. Eventually we figured out who it was and it became a game, to put the gnome inside the other persons house in an innocuous spot. They even had us kids in on the joke sometimes and used us to hide the gnome while our parents distracted each other. It was a lot of fun :)
This is fantastic, I wish I would have watched it sooner! Also I was fully prepared to watch you set the big goat on fire at the end of this video, but also am glad you did not do that and go to prison.
Pretty wild that I found your channel for the first time and randomly clicked this video on December 24th of all the days in the year lol so I'll celebrate this statistically mind-blowing coincidence by subscribing and wishing you a very happy Birthday!
For the 100 year anniversary the should build a seemingly ordinary goat. Then when it's inevitably burned it's revealed that on the inside there's a fully metallic goat, that stands up, throws up the devil's horns hand signal and then sings "Holy Diver" by Dio. Then turns into a pub.
Jeoff: Hey, Isn't kind of weird that people burn a giant efigee of a goat once each year? Me, a guy from València: Do you people burn only one? Edit: Jeoff: And people don't want the goat burning. Me: Wh... Wha... Why?????
On one hand, the burning of the Gavle goat is the only reason I've even heard of it, so there is some merit to have this conflict continue for the sake novelty. On the other hand, I've been in the shoes of the artist whom their work were destroyed by people who don't even know who they were. Even though I didn't put a lot of effort into my work at the time, it still hurts at least a little. I can't imagine how Mr. Backer feels, seeing weeks worth of work getting destroyed in mere minutes every year and it being famous because of it. So I'm all for Gavlebocken staying.
Interesting... I always just assumed it was some weird Swedish Burning Man thing. EDIT: That's not a dog parade, those are Bernese mountain dogs (I think it's the Bern-ing of the goat?). They pull carts. It's what they're bred to do.
tbh I'd probably still call it a dog parade, seeing how they were all dressed up and walked around the crowd, but parade-definitions aside though: I love bernese, and I hadnt considered the pun! If that was intentional by them, thats genius.
I discovered my opinion on this at a very specific point in your video. I wanted to say that keeping the Goat alive seemed difficult, and is therefore the goal I wanted to support. However, when you reached modern times and security for the goat shot up, I had a pang of panic. I worried that it was too serious and with the end of the burning, comes the end of the whole thing. I realized that It's value is as Schrodinger's Goat. It's the tension of will it/won't it that I like.
As a person from another continent, who didn't even knew there is a place called Gälve, I enjoyed every minute of this documentary. Thank you, I'll burn a little goat doll every end of the year now.
I dont know if this is a german only thing, but in germany we place a birch tree in each city and decorate it in may. its a tradition that some people guard it while people from other citys/villages try to steal or destroy it. reminds me a lot of that.

I found your channel thanks to the Jazzskull video and your videos i've seen so far are fantastic! The Gävle goat in particular has been a fascination of mine as this spontaneously formed contemporary tradition that is honestly absolutely hilarious, and a testament to how humanity earns for mischief and shenanigans. The way you cover this topic is fascinating and i really appreciate the amount of work and effort put into the production, the research and the interviews, you really went above and beyound with those. Great work and good luck with the channel! And hey, we share a birthday :)

The yearly Böcken Burning Watch has become a tradition over on the Internet Today channel and I get such a kick out of it every year. Never thought I'd find someone doing a full-on documentary about it, much less the Mr. Jazzskull guy! So glad YT pushed that video on me so hard and that I finally clicked, as your content is literally exactly what I look for on this website. Excellent work as always, Jeff!
I started with "hey I recognize this goat from its twitter account" and now I am fully on Team Burn The Goat. Masterful work with this. Patreon subscription incoming.
Here I Canada they started selling the small straw goats at ikea so naturally I bought one and me and my friends gathered together built a fire and ritualistically burnt the goat in my backyard for Christmas
I've been catching up with all of your videos and i gotta say, your production value is trough the roof, great editing and filming, funny skits and lines, great time overall. Glad to see your channel growing and hopefully, it gets the attentiont it deserves. Great work man, have a good day!
huge appreciation for the effort that went into this, I loved hearing the points of view of all these different people. admittedly I hadn't considered that it could be painful for those who built it to see it literally going up in flames, and I feel for them, but in truth I do just find some sort of "ritual fire" to be much more of a celebratory spectacle than a big straw statue by itself
Jeff, I don’t mean this in a bad way, but you’re just the kind of weirdo I admire the most. You’re so idiosyncratic and I love that. I’m watching all I can find the time for (and sometimes I just keep watching till the end despite the fact that bedtime was 2 1/2 hours ago) because your stuff is just so compelling and it gives me joy. Please keep going, at least as long as you’re willing, and know that this trans woman in Taiwan is gung-ho for your material, all of it. Cheers and happy new year!
In Lithuania(not to far from sweden) we have a tradition very similar, but instead of a goat its a woman, like a scarecrow - Morė. And its actually part of the tradition to burn it. Every year people around the country build these scarecrows and burn them. They are usually ornate too. Also amazing video quality:)
Holy shit, dude. I can't even begin to describe how amazed I am by this video. I've never heard of the goat before, but you made this entire DOCUMENTARY so entertaining and amusing to watch this might be one of my favorite videos on youtube. You didn't just look up info online, you interviewed the people involved on every end of the opinion spectrum, you found an out-of-print book, OBTAINED A POLICE REPORT, interviewed people on the street, and all for a goat that must burn. You are my GOAT, Jeff
The algorithm suddenly showed me your video on the dootdoot skeleton gif and now I am on a binge of your whole archive of videos. And I am proud to say that this video is the first that prompted me to dive into your comment section and tell you that you, sir have one of the best writing, despite what you've said in the video about your writing to be the weakest part of your production. Throughout the whole video I am surprised whenever I heard of an argument about people not wanting to burn the goat. I am also surprised when I hear about people who want to burn it. The whole time I can feel myself combating, debating and arguing to both of my inner self about whether it is a good idea to put the goat in ablaze. Ah the joy I have when I listen to the interviews from people on both side of the fence. The liberating feeling when I get to listen to that interview with the gentleman in the house (sorry I am bad with names). The laughs I have when you explain your intricate drone plan especially to your interviewees. And the euphoria when you burn that tiny straw goat.
There's something so sad about seeing this video being one year too early for including the recent 'eaten "alive" by birds' destruction. I so want an updated ramble from Jeff on his thoughts/feelings re the birds. Every year I follow the goat's progress on tumblr via the various 'has the goat burned?' style blogs and their updates and the whole community was going wild over the birds this year. The art people made for it was absolutely fantastic and it was collectively decided that it counted as a good omen for 2024 despite the lack of literal burning
i saw the length of the video and was liike oh god i cant watch it all. but then i really got attached to the story. it was great. thank you for this video and all the research and things you did for this. people like you deserve all the views ever. very much underrated stuff. assman approves! ✅
I want the goat to stay untouched. But Ill admit there is an excitement in seeing if someone will try. But I warn you. You are not impartial when you actually have a desire to see it burn! Thats is your goat in the race!
32:53 wow I was expecting young kids to say something like "burn it! burn it! yeah fire! wooooo!" but theyre like "nah bro it actually takes some effort to make these why would you destroy it" nice kids :o
I absolutly love all of your videos, the ammount of work you put in this is incredible, and the way that you bring all of this questions and topics at the and of the video just from burning the goat is incredible. Thanks for this and all of your work. Tack så mycket :))

I'd heard of the goat and it's burning before now but it was fascinating to learn more about it. Really good video!
(And a happy early birthday)
@@jeffiot It's such a good pun I can't imagine it not being intentional. XD
Didn’t know I needed to hear a deep dive into the history of Swedish goat but thank you dearly
holy shit what an amazing video. so happy this came up on my feed. how does this only have 9,000 views?
this video is really, really good and you are criminally underrated
I discovered my opinion on this at a very specific point in your video. I wanted to say that keeping the Goat alive seemed difficult, and is therefore the goal I wanted to support. However, when you reached modern times and security for the goat shot up, I had a pang of panic. I worried that it was too serious and with the end of the burning, comes the end of the whole thing. I realized that It's value is as Schrodinger's Goat. It's the tension of will it/won't it that I like.
Tack så mycket för den här fantastiska videon! Jag vill resa att se den berömda geten (innan det brinner nästa året) och visa min respekt
As a person from another continent, who didn't even knew there is a place called Gälve, I enjoyed every minute of this documentary.
Thank you, I'll burn a little goat doll every end of the year now.
I watched this entire documentary thinking it had hundreds of thousands of views, but
I dont know if this is a german only thing, but in germany we place a birch tree in each city and decorate it in may.
its a tradition that some people guard it while people from other citys/villages try to steal or destroy it.
reminds me a lot of that.
Each city is maybe a bit much to say haha. I actually don't know any cities or villages who still do this (I live in North/East Germany).
@@Broeckchen ahh I see. well guess mostly a bavarian thing then nowadays lol
not even those small trees boyfriends chain to the fences of their girlfriends houses then?
I found your channel thanks to the Jazzskull video and your videos i've seen so far are fantastic! The Gävle goat in particular has been a fascination of mine as this spontaneously formed contemporary tradition that is honestly absolutely hilarious, and a testament to how humanity earns for mischief and shenanigans. The way you cover this topic is fascinating and i really appreciate the amount of work and effort put into the production, the research and the interviews, you really went above and beyound with those. Great work and good luck with the channel!
And hey, we share a birthday :)
I got your videos on my feed,i have flu from 6 days now and im devouring all your videos while im sick,so thank you for having me laugh, know new things and overall entertaining my days. You deserve so much more recognition, these videos are really well made. Keep them up jeff! Greets from 🇮🇹
This was amazing, thank you so much for the incredible watch!
Fun fact! This year we didn’t even have to destroy it, it got eaten by birds because the straw they used was full of seeds! Go birds!!
I just looked this up, and promptly lost it.
Your "hidden" call to sub in Teo's latest video worked :P
And I'm happy it did, your stuff is amazing!
Most underrated channel since Bobby Fingers. I'm surprised this doesn't have 1m views
Criminally undersubbed, have been passing your videos around to everyone I know. Amazing work!
I didn't know I needed this but herrejävlar det gjorde jag tydligen. Great doc, deserves way more views!
Sure, I'll watch an almost two hour documentary about a giant goat, why not.
Yeah, ok, I didn't expect to laugh, cry, ponder existence and consider my own morality in a video about a straw goat. One of the best videos ever.
Happy birthday! I actually found this video yesterday but I'm gonna finish it today :) This was so incredibly interesting and enlightening, thank you!
And the euphoria when you burn that tiny straw goat.
this deserves so much more attention omg awesome video so far 34:44 was my favorite part
i can't believe this gem only has 7k views, you deserve millions! so far i've loved this vid👽‼️‼️
AND JUST WHEN I THOUGHT THE VIDEO COULDN'T GET BETTER, A FLUFFY CAT JUMPED ONSCREEN
the production value on your videos is insane. The fact that this has less than 10 million views is insane to me. Nice work.
This is such a good documentary, you really deserve a lot more attention (hope you get it thanks to the funky skull- i'm here because of that video!)
Found this channel on my Christmas vacation. Time well spent!
i saw the length of the video and was liike oh god i cant watch it all. but then i really got attached to the story. it was great. thank you for this video and all the research and things you did for this. people like you deserve all the views ever. very much underrated stuff. assman approves! ✅
I want the goat to stay untouched. But Ill admit there is an excitement in seeing if someone will try.
But I warn you. You are not impartial when you actually have a desire to see it burn! Thats is your goat in the race!
I know your videos on movies are your most popular but this is by far my favorite. Weird, funny, educational, insightful. Thank you!
this channel slaps, im so glad the algo latched on to the doot vid. All these amazing videos!
Incredible. Just amazing. I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you.
thank you so much, glad you liked it!
Holy shit you’re my new favourite youtube channel! Pluss i kanten att du spelar Ramschackle glory i slutet, helt underbart
Really great documentary!! I loved this watch. Really impressive dedication to research and reaching out to people involved with the goat.
As an anthropology major, this is my JAM. I love humans and their weird shit
As usual, incredibly well produced, criminally underwatched. You deserve millions of views.
Awesome video Jeff, you deserve way more attention for how much love and effort evidently goes into your stuff.
only 790 likes for this ??? this was a great fascinating experience coming from someone who doesn't know a whole lot about swedish culture.
Amazing video as allways!
This has to be one of my favorite videos of yours by far
10 minutes in and I already know this video is gonna be a banger
You know a videos good when it slaps you in the face with a pat song at the end.
Maybe the goat was Jeff all along. You're the goat Jeff.
32:53 wow I was expecting young kids to say something like "burn it! burn it! yeah fire! wooooo!" but theyre like "nah bro it actually takes some effort to make these why would you destroy it" nice kids :o
Look at that upstanding young man in camo sticking up for the goat artisans. The kids are alright, i tell ya
I absolutly love all of your videos, the ammount of work you put in this is incredible, and the way that you bring all of this questions and topics at the and of the video just from burning the goat is incredible. Thanks for this and all of your work. Tack så mycket :))
I never knew anything about this! Fascinating video! I enjoy your content a ton!
watching this every year is now a crimbo tradition
