BUNCE ISLAND- WHERE DO I BEGIN .I HAD TO PLEASURE TO VISIT THE SLAVE ISLAND. WHEN I STEPPED OFF OF THE BOAT AND MY FEET TOUCHED THE SOIL, I FELT LIKE I WAS HOME ARE SOME WHERE CLOSE. IM A SOUTH CAROLINA NATIVE AND IF YOU EVER BEEN TO BUNCE ISLAND AND YOU SEEN THE POSTED SIGN SAYING SLAVES FROM THE ISLAND WERE SHIPPED TO SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA... TEARS CAME TO MY EYES AND THEY STILL DO AT TIMES I WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN, BUT I SEEN IT AND TOUCHED IT AND I KNW ITS REAL
This literally bought a tear to my eye! It is hard to believe that over twenty years after I was last there the island has steadily disintegrated still further. I know Joe Opala (from Oklahoma) has built his career on campaigning for the island to be saved and was in fact awarded the Order of Rokel for all the work he has done to alert people to the existence of the island and the danger(s) it faces - has nothing come of all this? Seriously? Please correct me if I am wrong - I really hope I am!
Quite simply, The Goverments cared about the welfare state of the island when it produced slaves. But now apart from tourism it has no Finacial Benefit.. so they wont help preserve what has already decade. Its wrong, SAVE THE ISLAND!!
