I'm a first time gardener and just started in late may. Bought the tiniest plants at Walmart because they were the cheapest and were on sale. Used the galvanized containers meant to hold summer drinks. Also on sale. So far I got 19 cucumbers, 4 bell peppers, and 5 zucchinis. I'm waiting for eggplants to be ready for picking. About 6 that are formed and lots of flowers. Planted bush beans from seed and got 3 beans today, more coming. My beefsteak tomato is filled with fruits. Waiting to ripen. 4 of them are already huge. Lemon, apple, Watermelon, banana peppers, okra planted from seeds and so far doing good. I have been learning from you since the beginning and the way you do things and experiment in your garden taught me not to be scared of plants because I really was. Never grew anything before. Killed my son's school project of beans and radishes 2 consecutive years. Knowledge really is power and now it's all I can think about.

I got one of these as a addition to my smallish raised bed garden. Running out of space in the yard so the thought was a patio container that I could grow a lot in. My Greenstalk is doing beautifully. Planted “Birds Nest” cherry tomatoes. Salsa peppers. Green beans. Lettuce. Strawberries. Sage. Cilantro. Thai basil. Plus tucked some marigolds and impatients in for the “pretty patio” effect. I am amazed and plan to add a second one next year.
This is perfect for those who are space limited, such as apartment dwellers. I am with you on the so-called potting soils and mixes. These days, all you get are ground up shipping pallets and other trash wood products with a splash of fertilizer. There are a lot of shady products being sold these days. Thank you for calling it out for what it is.
You got that right with pallet trash... it is under the name forestry product for ingredients. So wrong. Anyway amending up works. Hope the season finishes well for you.
I bought some cheap bags of potting soil from Walmart to fill a raised bed ( I think was part cement), when wet I couldn't lift bag. I like Vigrow? I bought at Home Depot. The cheaper stuff is crap.
Brilliant, thank you! I definitely would put a tub under that tubing to catch any of the worm casting tea solution to feed to other plants. Note to self: Every 10-14 days: 3 oz vermisterra worm casting tea in 2 gallon water. 3' bamboo poles stuck into pockets to tie pepper plants to so they do not break off.

This looks like something that would fit perfectly in my urban garden. I have some ideas to use this in a slightly different way. I bet this would work great for my style of gardening.
If you ever get to one, Id like to see the pictures. I am thinking of ways to use it. Peas in the bottom trellised up. A cherry type indeterminate in the bottom just one but as it grows trellis it up and bury the stems in other pockets. That might be cool. Maybe two plants of different color tomatoes.
Even with the plug it just slows the water. It works well to let you fill it as I did but its not water tight. It just slows the drain. It can be left on.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Is the pepper production as good as plants in a bed? I have heard you get less peppers, Bell specifically, than plants in a garden bed or raised bed.

I bought one a few months ago and I love it. The only thing I've noticed when I put small seedlings in a pocket, I have to plant farther in because the soil stays dry near the edge. My peppers are doing very well, too.
Hey, Ashley from GreenStalk here. So glad you vhose to grow in a GreenStalk vertical planter. lWe do suggest that when growing from seed (which is what we mostly do) to water the seeds in by the pocket. When they germinate, you can use the water system. We have a lot of blog posts about growing from seed on our website. I hope this helps!
Odette 381, I was going to advise same thing as Ashley Christina - Always water seeds & seedlings by sprinkling water in each pocket. At the same time, water thru the reservoir, too.

My Greenstalks (3 tiers) has not been successful for me in CA, I have all peppers in it and they were struggling, esp the ones on the bottom level, it seemed that the two top tiers were dry and needed water but the bottom one stayed too wet. I unstacked them to try and let them recover and only be watered when they need it. We shall see if they bounce back, it has only been about a week now. Two of the peppers that were on the bottom row have peppers on them, but they are all gangly looking and thin.
So I made my mix. And now a days add more coir or peat. Gary, since the herbs are perennials will you keep it outside over the winter? I assume that the peppers will succumb to the cold, so I assume that you can just pull them out and replant in the spring. any worries about the cold cracking the plastic?
So it is designed with a 5 year warranty and to be out side all year around. I am not sure what I will do. I could as you said pull them out and let them over winter. If the do stay out, They would be covered with a large black trash bag.

Hi Gary...Did you say you water 2X a day?....What do you do for a vacation?....Trying to figure out if a drip irrigation would do the trick but that cap needed being on for proper level of fill....not seeing how it would work....Ideas?
You don't have to water it 2x a day. I think I met have met on a scheduled watering day, I fill it twice on the hot days. But generally speaking Every 2 or 3 days with large plants on hottest days. Otherwise when young and cooler, every 3 or 4 days or longer. Just depends on temps, what your are growing and plant size. Someone else same drip question. I think drilling a hole on each tier and dropping a line to each level would be easiest and most effective. Yeah I would drip right into the tiers.

Great video! The website says tomatoes, indeterminate and determinate can be grown in there, but doesn't go into much detail if it's one tomato per tier or if more than one can be planted in a tier. What would you recommend? I think their site said it's an 8 gallon container, so if I grew an indeterminate in one pocket, do you think I get away with a small determinate dwarf on the opposite side and marigolds and herbs in the remaining 4 pockets?
Im growing tomatoes in it this year. I think you could do 2 determinates per tier max at small to mid range. I will be experimenting. I am going to grow a larger indeterminate planted in bottom tier and going to root the grow upwards on other tiers. Ill put marigolds and other small plants in the other pockets.

Gary Container mix + coco coir + peat moss + warm castings and hand full of organic fertilizer ? what organic fertilizer do you use ? No perlite or vermiculite?
No need for P and V. I use that when I make seed starting mix. V is definitely a must in seed start mix but perlite ismt 100% needed. Established plants do great in a combo of coir and peat. I found this order of best; coir peat mix, just peat, just coir. These 3 variations are mixed with soil too. I haven't done 100% soilless yet.
Do you have a list of the ingredients and total amounts needed used for the soil prep? I want to make sure I get the correct stuff and amounts. I looked on your blog but the search did not turn up anything. Thanks. JimE
So I vary it because there are a 1000 ways but the bottom line is you want 50% or more to be either peat moss, coir or a combination of both. The key if fluffy and water retention. The rest I vary on the recipe. Please check out my seed shop for neem oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, sprayers, calcium nitrate for blossom end rot, seeds, seed starting supplies and more. www.therustedgarden.com

Gary, I'm thinking the white ones will end up promoting a bit more photosynthesis due to white reflecting more wavelengths of light on the "backs" of the plants. Thoughts? Considering getting one of these before I start setting up for the fall garden.(With your link ofc ;) )
Thanks for the consideration. So I do rotate mine. I would go with the gray or white, lighter colors just too keep it from over heating. Now if you want the warmth for a specific reason, I think black is the way to go.

Do you have any tips for keeping slugs and snails away from plants? I’m growing some tyme, lemon balm, chives and strawberry’s and I’m looking to use the tier like potting system, but I don’t want slugs and snails getting to them when they are fully grown. Thanks!
Would Potting mix do? I usually buy Pennington Pro Potting Mix for my Growboxes (they come with their own fertilizer strip) I could add the worm castings and fertilizer then use the tea you mentioned. Also, do these stand sturdy? Wind knock them over during storms? Do they have any eyeholes I could ziptie a 6 foot stake to keep it upright?
They are sturdy. No issues with wind and we had few nice storms go through. If Pennington does not have shredded wood in it and they do a quality job with peat, then it should be fine. The addition of peat and coir just add a lot of moisture holding capacity. You know the don't have holes for that, not a bad idea.
Shredded wood is bad? It has processed softwood bark, Canadian sphagnum peat moss, Perlite and vermiculite and one or more of the following. Compost, peanut hulls , rice hulls and dolomite
I'm growing peppers in 5 gallon containers but for some reason their leaves are yellow and they're nowhere near as big as the ones you have. They've been growing for several months and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I water them once every 2-3 days and have them covered with mulch, plus I apply fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks. Any suggestions?
Fish emulsion is a pretty safe way to keep the N up in containers if your scared about burning the plants. The non organic stuff is fine too, just gotta take it easy on the doses as it's a direct solution of the macronutrient compounds in most cases.
Gary, how often do you have to water? A 2-star review for this product on Amazon (yes, it is GreenStalk, not a knock-off) said that they had to water once or twice a day.
Hmm so I planted in May and plants were smaller. Through June... not often. Every couple days and then increased as they got larger and it got hotter. Watering is super fast. I would think they didn't water enough when they did. Now with the heat and size I water every other day or every 2 days but... the key is to fill the reservoir 2 or 3 times. Really soak it when you water. Takes like 4 minutes to fill it. Also I might argue they didn't set the soil up like I did. That makes a huge difference for holding water. I really like it.
Crunchy Emily, I’ve got 2 Greenstalk towers on my deck this year. Zone 7, N. AL. In spring (late May), I watered once per week, filling reservoir 2x. As Gary said, when plants get large & temps go up (we started averaging 90 degrees in June!), have to water more often. Now, in Aug, w mature plants & temps 95-98 much of the time, I fill the reservoirs 3x every other day. BUT, still very easily done, & the Greenstalk design guarantees your plants won’t be under- or over-watered. (I planted annual/biennial herbs, + bush beans, which are starting the 3rd planting/crop this summer, following an very early spring crop of lettuces, spinach, & kale.) For sure spinach. Squash and zuke and melons probably not. Bush cucumbers and Determinate type tomatoes I think would work. I still have to experiment with them next year.

I have a way smaller youtube channel but I have 3 and I am growing all sorts of food in mine ❤
I've used this system the last 2 years. Very successful. Highly recommended. Frequency of water dependant on soil quality.
You make a great point. Watering is often based on the container mix. That is why peat and coir are so important.
Thank you for taking time to go thru all the steps. It's such a blessing to us who aren't as versed in the language of growing just yet!
Very glad to share

I love the paint stick tag idea!!!
Great idea.

I just got mine today...used your code!... Cant wait to get started!
Appreciated. I think you will really like it.
I guess when it rains u have to take that plug out before the rain comes. Really cool, great vid.
Even with the plug it just slows the water. It works well to let you fill it as I did but its not water tight. It just slows the drain. It can be left on.
Love your video, I share and do the same thing out of containers that cost only a couple dollars, what fun to get everyone to grow, thanks!

I bought one a few months ago and I love it. The only thing I've noticed when I put small seedlings in a pocket, I have to plant farther in because the soil stays dry near the edge. My peppers are doing very well, too.
That's good to know. Can I asked what mix you used? I might make a blend just for the pocket area.
Can you do a video about planting some heirloom carrots, beets, radish etc in the GreenStalk?
So I am not doing those three as to maximize space. Maybe next. year

would it be easier to add the plants before you stack the tiers?
Yep. As it was my firs time, I went right to the build. But it wasn't that much work and I was a little concerned, as some plants were tall, I might snap them. But now that I built it, pre planting would work well.
This would be perfect for the residents at the Assisted Living facility where I work. It would make great group project. Thanks for sharing
But there's no point if there's not enough space for the pepper plants to produce a half decent yield?

My Greenstalks (3 tiers) has not been successful for me in CA, I have all peppers in it and they were struggling, esp the ones on the bottom level, it seemed that the two top tiers were dry and needed water but the bottom one stayed too wet. I unstacked them to try and let them recover and only be watered when they need it. We shall see if they bounce back, it has only been about a week now. Two of the peppers that were on the bottom row have peppers on them, but they are all gangly looking and thin.
So I made my mix. And now a days add more coir or peat. The peppers are doing really well but I have been working all my contianer, these and others, every other day because the heat has been so bad for 3 weeks. Good luck

Looks good Gary, what do you do next spring? Are you going to replace all the soil?
I will dump it, break it up and amend it. Most will go back in. This mix of coir and peat can last quite a long time. I just dump it as to evenly mix in new ferts and break up roots.
Thanks, I might try this with strawberries but the soil would have to stay.
I may try this indoors. 😊
Huge space save that way.
I have read peppers need 5 gallon pots, this looks a lot smaller, do you think this worked well for the peppers being smaller? Thank you!!!
Each tier holds 7 gallons. The key is watering. and feeding. If you stay up on it, no trouble.

QUESTION: Is it too late to start peppers from seed? I am on zone 7b. My other pepper seed transplants were killed by the weather ;-( I know they take forever to grow.
No but I would start some now and plant them when smaller and the soil is warm. They do take off. And maybe some nursery transplants just to get some going.

Watering twice a day seems quite laborious. I wonder if anyone has found a way to automate this?
What kind of peat moss did you recommend Cocoa something?
Plain peat moss or a product called Coco Coir.

How often do you water the tower
I'm a beginner planter. I have a few small pots of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. I added compost to potting soil. Is that an ok thing to do??
Usually but what kind of compost. Some compost isn't 100% broken down so it competes for nitrogen with your plants. I learned that the hard way.
It's by miracle gro, it called nature's care.
Gary, great vids as always, but you should mute your sound on the transitions if you don't think it's worth hearing. Only takes a couple more minutes to do. Hope this suggestion is well received. 😊
Thanks.
What grows best in this? Would eggplants and okra grow well in this? Any other plants you think might grow well in this that’s not in the video.
No not okra. Its massive. Egglpant fruits get to heavy for this too. Determinate tomatoes grow well in it.

Interesting. Mine didn't come with a cap to use when watering. I have to sit and hold my finger in the hole to fill the reservoir. I wonder if they stopped providing the watering cap or if my order just didn't include one for some strange reason.

Nice rig! I'm wondering if the top level gets more watered then the bottom level or if if everything gets evenly watered.
Pretty evenly. Filling it twice at high production and heat make a difference. I let it go a bit long between waterings and the bottom plants actually wilted first.
Beautiful

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN great! Maybe one day you can do a grow together series where you post ahead of time the veggies and herbs your planting and all materials needed. Gary
Container mix + coco coir + peat moss + warm castings and hand full of organic fertilizer ? what organic fertilizer do you use ?

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank for the reply Gary. Heading to the GreenStalk store on Monday. They are right here in Knoxville and the pickup price is much better than anywhere on the internet.
Really enjoy the channel. JimE
It looks messy, but can you really manage pests?
LOL messy, I say great growth. But no great pest issues that the rest of my garden peppers. Very few.

Nice system.
How many gallons/liters is one container?
I cant find the exact amount. You can ask Ashley and www.greenstalkgarden.com. Its a family business. She is super helpful.
They told me 1 cubic foot of soil per tier. Thanks Gary for gardening lessons. It is extremely helpful to a first time gardener like me
Looks real 👍
It performed well and it wasn't over babied either. I just let it do its thing. One key is setting up the soil. For this and for all containers, the mix set up I make helps so much.

Hi Gary great video, I purchased the 5-Tier greenstalk tower with your code. I'm a newbie gardener, 1st year, anyway you can list out all the herbs and peppers you planted in your tower, thanks
So any pepper. Just your choice. Herbs that did well were thyme, oregano and chives. I had a rosemary in there and lavender. These grow all season long. But you could do basil and cilantro too. Ill be doing more with a couple containers this year. Thanks for using my code! Check out my new Amazon Influencer Shop. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you
hey gary a lot of the store mixes have fertilizer already added in the mix, do you get top soil or find soil that doesn't have the added fert? i'm afraid to get mixes with fert and then add more fert with the worm castings and handful of fert like you said, thanks
I buy what is on sale. It really is just your personal preference. No harm comes to the garden. I mix it a lot of peat which has nothing in it. The fert in the bags is fairly low from what I understand.
Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
Did you run into any issues with blossom end rot?
Not at all believe it or not.

Do you have any tips for keeping slugs and snails away from plants? I’m growing some tyme, lemon balm, chives and strawberry’s and I’m looking to use the tier like potting system, but I don’t want slugs and snails getting to them when they are fully grown. Thanks!
I use iron phosphate or sodium phosphate. Works perfectly.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Ah great. I will give this a try. And do you just just spray on and around the leafs?
You could also surround the bottom of the bottom level with a ring of copper gardener's tape. They won't cross copper.
Curious if you'll be using this now that you have your vast beds in place.
This is amazing!!!
Do you think you could hook up the watering to a drip system?
Yeah if the pressure of the drip system can go vertical if you wanted to weave it tier to tier.
@@realmanpwns Its just not the best for pots. He said planters need water retaining soil, like how he demonstrated.
I would fertilize about every 10 days. Make sure they are getting full sun and plenty of water, too.
So as mentioned, a water soluble fertilizer every 10-14 days. It makes a difference.
Fish emulsion is a pretty safe way to keep the N up in containers if your scared about burning the plants. The non organic stuff is fine too, just gotta take it easy on the doses as it's a direct solution of the macronutrient compounds in most cases.
How are the hops doing?
Looking good!
How do get squash vine borer?
Moths lay eggs on stems.
Thanks! That's helpful. I'm considering getting one... (of course I'd use your affiliate link ;) ).
(I planted annual/biennial herbs, + bush beans, which are starting the 3rd planting/crop this summer, following an very early spring crop of lettuces, spinach, & kale.) (I cover the towers w blankets if frost or freeze threatens.)
Thanks, wcwoman16! Very helpful, as we share similar climate (I'm zone 7, southeast OK).
You couldnt fit one more? 😆
Awesome!!
Well I was thinking....
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) 😊Have the best Sunday!!
Amazing ✊👨🌾
It worked quite well.
this is great! Would cucumbers and spinach do well in this? Rather, are there any vegetables you think would not work well in this? Thanks
For sure spinach. Squash and zuke and melons probably not. Bush cucumbers and Determinate type tomatoes I think would work. I still have to experiment with them next year.
Where do I buy it from
Any of my videos from this year have a link and a discount code.
They don't ship to UK 😢 😲
Ah too bad.
You didn’t show how to set these containers on top of each other, please show that. Thanks.
I have other videos on that. Search vertical gardening
Oh ok, thanks.
Tried to buy but they only ship to US and Canada =(
Oh that stinks. They are a small family company. Maybe one day.
terrific
TY
Too bad they sell Greenstalk only in the U.S. No international orders/shipping according to their site.
man! i need this!
Glad to share
