In 2016, four of us took the whole summer/fall and drove up there having a great time! Best summer ever. We sang this song everyday and more!! Love Johnny Horton!
My dad knew Jonny Horton, used to take him and Tennessee Ernie Ford fishing. We had an autographed album, his greatest hits, that we played over and over. Knew all his songs by heart.
Agree with Wayne. Would love to know more.. Especially as I loved T Ernie Ford too! But Johnny was tragically taken from us disgustingly early 😕 Please add a bit of info if you can.. Would be fab to have his loveliness confirmed! 💕
I saw the film as a kid when it first came out and have seen it many times since, I have never tired of it. I just love the way Jonny Horton sings the song.
My Dad drove us up the Alcan Hiway in 1961...1000 miles of dirt road. I thought Anchorage was going to look like this movie. I wasn't too far off...the main street wasn't paved until after the 1964 earthquake which we were there to experience. 9.2 quake for 5 minutes....but I grew to love it and still think of it as home.
When I was a teenager, American actor John Wayne was a masculine idol for young Koreans and a representative figure of American pioneering spirit. That is why we respected him and were witnesses of America's greatness for that reason. I remember the immortal star John Wayne forever.
This movie was a hum-dinger. A perfect cast one and all and John could relax a bit and let the co-stars shine. Johnny Horton was one of a kind and he was one of the best!
I’ve always loved this song, mom and dad taught me good. I just got a call from my daughter saying she’s getting married… and in Alaska!!! So I can’t get this song out of my head, bringing back special memories…. Just had to share❤️
It was a great song and a great movie, but I hope everyone noticed that all the scenes from the movie that appeared in this clip were filmed in the desert near the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southern California, still a great natural area, but Alaska is forest and tundra, not sagebrush and desert. Obviously done to save money during film production, as costs to ship all the equipment to film on location in Alaska would have been very high.
This song made me to a true Johnny Horton Fan!! To me one of his best songs ever, including some of his 50's Country/Rockabilly Music he recorded for his LP "The Fantastic Johnny Horton" aka "Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton".
Used to hear this song every Saturday morning on the record player when my mum (RIP) would play it. So many great memories and my mum loved John Wayne as well. Cheers for the post
My grandpa would play this song and I would sit in his lap while he played and sung this song. I still get chocked up when I hear it we lost grandpa in sept. 1997
This is by far my favorite John Wayne movie and Johnny Horton is the only one who could have pulled off this song. You can tell by his vocals how much emotion he puts into every lyric. Absolutely amazing. Back when there were real men and real women and nothing in between!!!!!!!!
John Wayne was my parents' favorite actor and I always watched his films with them. Fond memories of this one and as always, this video you crafted is fantastic, thanks! Sharing!!!
John Wayne is my favorite actor too since I was 12 or so. 29 now. He wasn't only an actor with a great screen presence, but a very good character actor too, for which he is a little underappreciated.
Great song, Fantastic Movie! I'm going to have to watch it again soon! I've seen it 100 times, I have the DVD! Still one of my Top 10 All Time Favorite Movies!
Johnny Horton one of the finest singers for Songs that told a story!!!!! This song turned into a great Movie starring John Wayne..If never saw it!!!Find and watch it!! RIP Johnny..!!
as a child my father to me to see "North to Alaska" in atlanta ga, i believe at the paramont or the lowes grand ! fond memories since his passing in aug 1988 !
Big Bad John has been my nickname for 45 years. I used to be able to pick up half a house. I stood a little taller than 6'6" I used to stand 6'9" tall and was strong as 5 men. But now after a accident in 2009 I'm no longer Big Bad John, just big John I'm 6'6" and around 250. And barely able to pick up fork. But oh well
For over fifty years John Wayne has entertained filmgoers around the world with his work in films. He had his first starring role in "The Big Trail", made in 1930, and after that he played leads in many low-budget westerns and serials throughout the rest of the decade. He made his first classic film "Stagecoach", in 1939, which made him one of Hollywood's top stars for four whole decades. He won an Oscar for best actor for the movie "True Grit" in 1969. He passed away from cancer in 1979. at the age of 72. John Wayne was a great man, a true symbol of the American pioneering spirit. Rest in peace, O mighty Duke of Hollywood. The movies you have made, and your memory and legacy will live on forever. And say hello to Maureen O'Hara for me while you're up there.
I remember the first saw North To Alaska I was about 7. My Mother asked me right after what man did I like best. I said definitely George Pratt. She then said the star was John Wayne and he was supposed to be the favorite. However I really preferred George Pratt quite the best! But thereafter I did become a great fan of John Wayne to!
I must thank the poster for this film clip in excellent quality to the Johnny Horton title song which the brother of my best friend had on a 45 way back in the early 60s so this is a song I have enjoyed for many a year if anything I think I like the song more with every listen. The footage is interesting as it shows just what a ham actor John Wayne often was and yet given the right role he was actualy a very fine natural performer as in The Shootist, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and of coarse in The Searchers his finest performance. Play on Johnny Horton.
I'm 75 now but I saw this at the show when it first came out. The color was breathtaking and the entire production was excellent. I never tire of watching it. It was Wayne's best and funniest. I bought the record of this song because I loved it so much.
Great movie with a superb cast and Johnny Horton sining the title song. He was killed in an auto accident outside of San Antonio, Texas about half a mile from my parent's home. Another great talent gone to soon!

Johnny Horton should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame
He’s not??
Horton is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
Rockabilly HOF is better. Country Music has become shit. Nothing but tractor rap and easy listening crapola.

Brings back childhood memories. I saw this movie in the theater when I was 10. Still enjoy the theme song now as I did as a child.

Johnny Horton was a truly under appreciated talent. This theme song for a Classic John Wayne movie proves that.

Big Sam left Seattle in the year of ninety-two
With George Pratt his partner and brother Billy too
They crossed the Yukon river and they found the bonanza gold
Below that old white mountain
Just a little south-east of Nome
Sam crossed the Majestic mountains to the valleys far below
He talked to his team of huskies
As he mushed on through the snow
With the northen lights a-runnin' wild
In the land of the midnight sun
Yes Sam McCord was a mighty man
In the year of nineteen-one
Where the river is windin' big nuggets they're findin'
North to Alaska go north the rush is on
North to Alaska go north the rush is on
George turns to Sam with his gold in his hand
Said Sam you're lookin' at a lonely lonely man
I'd trade all the gold that's buried in this land
For one small band of gold to place on sweet little Jenny's hand
'Cause a man needs a woman to love him all the time
Remember Sam a true love is so hard to find
I'd build for my Jenny a honeymoon home
Below that old white mountain
Just a little south-east of Nome
Where the river is windin' big nuggets they're findin'
North to Alaska go north the rush is on
North to Alaska go north the rush is on
