I use cash envelopes. I’m a pen and paper girl. Keep every receipt till the end of the month than total all categories and staple it to the month’s budget. Doing another low spend year again. My frugality will help pay my mortgage down. My plan this year is to pay a extra year on my mortgage

Love all of these Nicola :) your last point is something that I wish a few people close to me would understand :( I know people who are insanely in debt, but still buy tons of absolutely pointless stuff

The older I get, the less stuff I want, if that makes sense? It doesn’t mean as much any more.

I am loving how ‘back to you’ you are seeming. I actually found you in the first place because of a difficult breakup and I am now on the frugal journey. I don’t need to give up my financial dreams because of a change in circumstances. Keep going! ❤

Great to see/ hear you again Nicola an the way you are getting back on track. Simple, frugal living is very empowering.Any extra money , or save,I earn goes into 5 various sinking funds which mean fun times with my loved ones. At 65 , I want to make memories with them, as well as for me, even more and it is so much fun!!!

I totally agree that most stuff is just stuff and unnecessary, that money should be prioritised towards making memories because time goes so fast - my children are teens now and don’t want to spend too much time with me, I really wish that while they were small I bought less things and did more with them….we did plenty but I wish I’s been more mindful about it & really enjoyed it - as I don’t think I have anything around me now that was more important to spend money on

I have decided to reduce my credit cards and only have 1 card. I have decided to do a no spend year.

Just limit the card you use to one. Do not cancel the others just don’t use them.

@janeknight3597 the problem with keeping cards and not using them is it leaves you more vulnerable to hacking and also counts as a loan if you apply for finance so limits how much you can borrow.

Even though my family now have their own little families, we still get together for vacations. We are mindful of the costs but we will do things slightly off season and always look to reduce costs. We all pitch in for groceries etc. Things we do here is split on campsites and cabins. One year, we did an 1100 mile road trip through the Rocky Mountains. We had my daughters family of four join us up north (Canada) for the long weekend and afterwards they went home and we travelled on because we had received our free $120 National Park pass. Another year, we rented a cabin in the Cascade mountains and fished, hiked and canoed/kayaked. Last year my entire family (10) rented a chalet for 10 days. We went kayaking, picnic, swimming etc. All our meals on each trip were preplanned and so were the events. We are all about the memories. Sometimes it's going to a symphony, a live theatre, an art exhibition, heritage villages, a concert, or a local festivals (at discounted prices or free of course). We always have access to beaches, forests, and mountains here in British Columbia. Being frugal can be fun. p.s. when I went to Florida , I bought the "city pass: for Orlando which got me into many attractions. Most major cities have them in the U.S and Canada.

In the NZ Money Karma (ruclips.net/channel/UCeZOntHOVjkkV_xL6t350dg) household I think the biggest benefit frugality brings us that it makes us slow down, enjoying the seasons and spending time together- rather than spending $. We put away $20/week for "bulk food" so we can make a big order each year with our local food co-op- Save hundreds!
