I always carry a mini tin like that exactly. I keep 6 feet of bank line, a magnifying glass, a utility razor blade and a fishing kit with 3 split-shots, 3 hooks and mono-line. I never leave home without it. As you know, with that, I can make fire day or night, fish day or night, cut things and make shelter. Everyone should have this I think ALWAYS! Thanks Dave for another video. I look forward to every one. God bless, my friend. Been following your vid's for years now. Love them all Brother.
Dave I've learned tons from all your videos over the past few years and I'd like to thank you for passing all these skills that you've acquired. Keep livin good brother
The one thing about your videos that I totally dig besides the main topic is the little "tips" or "tricks". The lamp wick idea is so simple yet genus! Thanks for sharing it.
Dave you are like the cool uncle i never had showing me all the things my absent father didn't ,god bless you and your family and THANK YOU for passing on this knowledge which i am passing on to my son .you are a humble giant among men
Tried my hand at leather working with a speedy stitch sewing awl and now have a great EDC pouch , sheath and neck carry fire kit . To inspire is a gift , keep giving !!!
When i was a kid they rebuilt Fort Meigs, and i got to play in it. I can still remember the smell of fresh sawed seasoned wood, they used to reproduce the fort. Many years later it was in bad need of repair and they finally tore it down. Fort Meigs is now a camp ground, and less than 8 miles from my house.
The Tipi sure seems to draft well Dave. I love watching someone that know how to build a fire do their thing. I learn something every time I watch one of your video's. Thanks for the knowledge.
Great to hear the full song Brother its great! You've got a great kit together there, love the pouch and cross! Just want to say thanks again for watching our jute video. God Bless, Bill & Josh
Thanks to you dave and all i learned from you these past years when im back in the woods......im livin good...thanks brother.......God bless you and yours.
Dave been watching your vids for years, bro. You've supplied me with more knowledge than I think any other single human being has aside from my own parents. Thank you for sharing the knowledge for free, I truly appreciate it.
I always wondered if that cross of yours had an alternative use. I just knew you had an ace up your sleeve with that one. Thank you Dave. thank you for all the knowledge. My camping trips are becoming quite cool with all the kids these days. I really love showing them how to build fires and shelters out of everyday stuff. That's what it is all about right? I am learning in the process. My 10 C kit is a bit overdone. But the kids and the parents love it. My best to you and yours.
Incredibly awesome video. When I go into the woods I always wear my British DPM smock. It's an awesome piece of gear. It has a lot of pockets so you can keep A LOT of important stuff in there. It's great if you don't have anything against wearing camouflaged clothes
I finally bought myself a ferro rod and I went to the woods. It was March in eastern Europe, the ground was wet but the sun was shining. I managed to collect some fluffy stuff from one liana. I've never started fire before with a rod but this stuff catches fire very easily and I managed to get a fire in no time. I used dry grass as a nest but my wood was wet even though I collected it from dead branches still attached to the trees above the wet ground. Anyway I managed to lit them. :)
Time spent having fun with the family and honing valuable skills is time well spent. Technology helps us do amazing things, but sometimes you have to get away from it for a while to remind yourself what's really important in life.
Great video, like the first part where you have the written commentary. Shots are much better framed too. Like that pouch too, reminds me of the leather work my late father did.
I made a pouch similar to that to hold the steel shot for my slingshot. Walk into any craft supply store and you will find a leather working section. They will have bulk bags of odd shaped leather pieces for low cost. plan out a pattern with paper and then make the pieces out of leather. If you bought the leather tooling stamps while you were in the craft store you can decorate it as much as you wanted to.
You sir, have the best channel on youtube. without a doubt. Hands down. Im sittin here by my fire, stairing back and forth between my fire and yours. Ha ha. Thanks for all your hard work friend!
loving the Tipi series brother! Keep up the great vids! love em, love em, love em. would love to attend one of your schools in the near future. God bless
Dave, I watch plenty of videos on youtube but yours are by far my favorite. They have a much more proffesional quality about them. Even compared to your earlier videos the quality continues to improve. Don't know if its just stuff you picked up from production crews doing dual survivor but whatever it is keep up the good work brother. Even though we have never met personally I consider you as a teacher.
Another great video Dave.... Thank you... Very nice pouch..... beautifully made... I have to buy a bottle of Crown Royal in order to get a pouch............ ;)
yea i seen those episodes, thought with the tipi series could show what the native americans way of making an preserving food was, keeping with the times and tradition
Thanks for sharing Dave. Always enjoy watching & seeing the cool tools of the trade brother. I still can't understand the haters with the dislikes. What the hell is there to dislike about this? But on another note, I heard the Mrs. is out & about & you are fixing the mower she broke! Now I'd like to see a video of that!
I also made my own. Turned out perfectly! I'm going to make a video on it in the next few days. I made it out of oil tanned leather, so its already 100% waterproof! I also did some tooling on a piece of hard leather on the front of the flap, like Dave's. I did a Celtic double headed dragon weave. Again, a video will show it a lot better:) Stay tuned! Take care, Reno
I wanna get out of the city life for a while and spend some time in the woods with a nice fire and by myself, I have the skill and know how, Its just a matter of getting there. I need that peaceful tranquility.
Of course, your magnesium also does this--it will easily catch a spark, and burns very hot, with the added benefit that it will still work if it gets wet. However, it burns up quickly. Therefore, having both magnesium and some sort of longer burning tinder isn't a bad idea.
The magnesium blocks that I have seen all have a small ferrocerium rod stuck in the side of them. The rod Dave showed in the video is just a bigger version of one of those, though they can vary in quality somewhat as there are different "recipes" to make ferrocerium, kind of like a steel rod could be made out of a number of different types of steel. What I'm trying to say here, is that you may already have a ferrocerium rod, with the added benefit of magnesium, which acts as an accelerant.
awesome series, wondering if you'll be showing how to make bannock or fry bread (scone) was pretty popular with the natives as making jerkery. awesome work you do showing and teaching ppl
hi Dave, great video as usual. where can we find the little `` pocket axe `` you have when splitting the little wood? a realy want one like this one. Have you ever think about comming here, up north in Canada for a few class...? we are in Quebec and we have a very large private land witn a lot of forest a many lakes too. if interested, you should contact me. thanks. Cads
********Dave, please talk more about the Tru nord button Compass? I have over the years bought so many button compasses and to be honest none of them were worth staking my life on to look for the correct direction when I needed them. Let us know your thought's and does that compass have multi uses or is it a tool that is one use only? Love the Cross necklace and Thanks for all you do!!!!********
Hey Dave, I allways have problems sustaining my fire after I've burnt up the smaller pieces. Any tips on controlling and building a longer lasting fire? Not so much for the flames but for heat with larger logs. Great vids btw!
Thanks! The only question I have is what kind of lens that is. I enjoyed the change of pace at the beginning with the music and text. This really has me wanting to see if a magnifier I have can start a fire.
Mine is about 3x. I do not think it matters what the magnification is, just as long as it transferes the UV rays and concentrates them to a small dot on a surface of some kind.
I am hoping you get a real good rain while you are doing the tipi series. I am curious how the tipi keeps everything dry with the seemingly large opening at the top. I'm loving the series Dave, know that we appreciate you.
Hey Dave, I have a question about your Pathfinder PSK-1 knife. Is the notch in the handle, the one that can be used for a bow drill spindle, very durable? How long would this notch last? Does it burn in to the tang and stop there or will there continue to be wear on the handle? I am interested in this product and see a possible drawback. Any info would be greatly appreciated. By the way, keep up the good work man. Love watching your vids. Made some raw hide glue tonight thanks to you!
I really liked the vid. Love all the personal stuff that you're acquiring. Do you still have that plastic flare holder w/ the wood pieces? That's goin' back a bit but you'll understand. Love the crucifix and necklace. Carry on, brother. God bless you and yours.
I'm gong to be backpacking about the states soon, just kind of going wherever. Won't be thr first time I've fine it, and last time I met some incredible people that I learned a lot from. How would you feel about a random traveler dropping in at the tipi
Would it be possible to do a video on all of the knives that the pathfinder school sells? I'm looking to buy one and it would be nice to see them all compared side by side (pros and cons). Thanks Dave, great videos.
Dave, what is the price comparison between the yurt you bought and the tipi you are showing? Your lady didn't seem especially enamored with the yurt; how does she feel about the tipi? It would be geat to see a few of the gals opining about these various shelters.
Awesome video to wake up to on my birthday brother! Also I'm getting a big order today from your website! To say I'm excited is an understatement! Love that fire pouch by the way Dave. What's a good place I can get some leather pouches similar to that for a common man price?
Dave, several of us would like you to show us how to make char cloth out of a oil lamp wick like the one you carry in your flint and steel kit. Did I hear you correct when you said you only burn the end or the tip of the wick? Please teach us the proper way, using a cotton oil lamp wick. Thank you sir.
Youth size (small) magnifier works good; just break it apart and grind smooth; store in pouch...check with school supplies and check if they have any glass ones
the one that I made will hold water since I oiled the bejeebus out of the leather to soften the edges before I sewed it up. leather projects get easier after the first one that you make.
Just a thought. Put a small striker on the back of your cross, if there already isn't one:-) Obviously if you loose your knife you'd still be good to go.
Not to get all in your business, Dave......but.......as a fellow nicotine addict I would like to recommend you tuck into some Swedish snus. It's steam cured and has fewer carcinogens than a grilled steak. I've got some in my mouth right now. There are many more flavors/strengths available with very high quality tobacco. If you tuck it in your upper lip you won't even have to spit for thirty minutes or so. Those Swedes know how to make the good stuff.
Micarta is a solid compound made of Fabric and Epoxy Resin (mostly) It is nice and hard and is usually used to make knife handles, but has other applications such a Dave's jewelry. Google Micarta :)
another way to make charcloth, just catch it on fire, watch it, it gets black, then snuff it out. Take like a spoon and press on it to kill the ember. Does it quick fast, easy. Might need a bit of practice, but it works well with even cottonballs.
I don't know about that. I went to CVS and Walgreens looking for that fresnel lens. By the way they don't know what a fresnel lens is, haha. So I asked them for a magnifying glass and they pointed me right to one of those pocket sized, thin, fresnel lenses like one of Dave's in a previous video. The catch to this rambling is, it wasn't free. They were about 4 dollars. Not breaking the bank by any means. But definitely not free. But I will say thanks Dave for recommending the place to get one.

Thank you for all the knowledge you have passed down over the years.
Brilliant as ever Dave, the 5 C's are probably the best concept that has ever been devised for Bushcraft/Survival..
The Tipi sure seems to draft well Dave. I love watching someone that know how to build a fire do their thing. I learn something every time I watch one of your video's. Thanks for the knowledge.
This is a great series, everything you cover in it is just so very interesting and informative. I am truly addicted. Thank You Dave.
Great to hear the full song Brother its great! You've got a great kit together there, love the pouch and cross! Just want to say thanks again for watching our jute video.
God Bless,

I really do like this series of diary of a Tipi great job and keep them coming, God bless the Pathfinder school
You do a great job with every topic you tackle. I just can't get enough.

A fire starting cross - I'm not even religious but that is freak'n sweet.
really like the pouch Dave.
I'm gong to be backpacking about the states soon, just kind of going wherever. Won't be thr first time I've fine it, and last time I met some incredible people that I learned a lot from. How would you feel about a random traveler dropping in at the tipi
That is such a good song for you Dave !,
I don't know who it is but it sound like it could have been written especially for you
Fantastic song sweet video man
Would it be possible to do a video on all of the knives that the pathfinder school sells? I'm looking to buy one and it would be nice to see them all compared side by side (pros and cons). Thanks Dave, great videos.
Hi Dave, enjoy all your video's and their teachings but my question is will any tree fungus work as a fire starter ......
i like the idea of the magnifying glass. but living in Scotland I sometimes forget what the sun looks like.
That is a really beautiful pouch..
Dave, what is the price comparison between the yurt you bought and the tipi you are showing? Your lady didn't seem especially enamored with the yurt; how does she feel about the tipi? It would be geat to see a few of the gals opining about these various shelters.
The maker of that pouch SHOULD do that for a living. Probably make a good living too, $80 easy for that bomber pouch. Pass along my compliments
Awesome video to wake up to on my birthday brother! Also I'm getting a big order today from your website! To say I'm excited is an understatement! Love that fire pouch by the way Dave. What's a good place I can get some leather pouches similar to that for a common man price?
Ok Dave you using a chain saw to cut your logs to make the kinling.Maybe your using a cross cut for the bigger wood.
I was wondering you could make a quick product review/overview of that little 1812 belt axe?
I would really like to see it in more detail.
Reno
i like the idea of a ferriceum rod in a necklace props to dan coppins sorry if his name is spelled wrong. good video dave

I personally don't believe in a god but, damn that cross is bad ass.

I second that Dave - other than the christmas message we never saw you wife in the Yurt. (grin) - did she boycot it?
Who needs a fire piston? Flint and steel all day!
another way to make charcloth, just catch it on fire, watch it, it gets black, then snuff it out. Take like a spoon and press on it to kill the ember. Does it quick fast, easy. Might need a bit of practice, but it works well with even cottonballs.
Super vid Dave.
I like how youre sitting indian style in the tipi vid.
Thanks Dave.

well dave usually carries a saw or an axe he is just showing that you can use the blades this way if you dont have a better option
