@hugo5353 only thing that needs tweaking out of the box is how you process your mics. But you're right, even just some eq cuts and gain adjusts, it's dope
Just picked up one of these for our rehearsal studio. The quick eq settings make things so easy in our setting. It's also super convenient to record straight to SD card and listen back at the end of rehearsal. Good stuff, Allen and Heath.
Here's the thing. My Allen&Heath Zed 10FX has always been the last thing I go through because it sounds warm and rich. Allen&Heath mixers sound so good! The incredible versatility of these units is SO smart and SO forward thinking! I look forward to digging in as soon as I get the CQ 12T!
I've got the same Zed 10FX. I've been out of the game a few years now. I also have and used the QSC Touchmix 8, Presonus RM16 and Behringer X air12. The other mixers I have are much larger for bigger events. I haven't seen this line yet. I've used these smaller mixers for DJ event setups, small band in-ear monitor system or just side stage floor monitor system or studio jam sessions. I do like the auto gain function...
i have zero experience in terms of working with a band live , all my work is done in home studio for my own entrainment , but i swear this took away all the overwhelming learning curve of working with a mixer live , its an amazing product
Used the CQ-20B for the first time last night. It was a quick setup and I didn’t have much time to play with all of the FX but the band I ran sound for never sounded better. They were blown away with the CQ4You App for their in ears. Bravo Allen & Heath. I’m a fan (and user) now.
This seems very user friendly for people like myself that is just learning how to EQ live bands. For people complaining about lack of features, this is a mid level mixer with a great price point. I guarantee that this is just a sort of beta console to test out for future more powerful mixers like the SQ predecessor.
Purchased the unit for Christmas - this is unbelievable !!! Easy to set up especially with awesome multitracking recording and to perform virtual sound checks. Already integrated with my DAW (Ableton) and minus mix (Zoom & Microsoft Teams). Best toy, beside the 350Z purchased !!!!
These are looking pretty good. I'm in Midas world, but this 96/96 audio spec seems to allow some pretty awesome processing tricks. I would give anything for that feedback protection algorithm!
There are some odd comments at the bottom of this thread! Anyway, I have an SQ5 and an XR18 and I'm looking to chop the XR18 in for a 20B. I know A&H Pres sound much nicer than the XR18 ones. The effects are better although fewer of them (but I don't use 95% of the Behringer effects anyway). A&H app support is way superior and I like the recording to SD card and USB at the same time plus the dual band Wi-Fi built in but with external option. In my view A&H have added value to the XR18 philosophy and got the improvements just about perfect. I would like to know if the 2.4GHz can be turned off to leave 5GHz wifi only? 2.4 is too crowded as it is for amateur guitar links and IEM kit.
13:00 I’m a guitar player and I didn’t know until I started learning more about mixing but for years I’d do sound check and I’d always make it a little quieter than it should be, mainly because I’m country and most stuff I play my guitar rolled off is my main volume, but every know and then for a solo or whatever I’d turn it all the way up or hit a boost pedal and probably messed with the sound engineer. I never thought about it until I started learning about sound engineering. I still do our own sound for bands so I just want a flat mix where everything is even across the board and the spikes in volume still come from that way of doing things, but having a sound guy who knows what he’s doing - that isn’t necessary lol
Imho the virtual soundcheck option is the killer feature, none digital mixers in that price range has afaik. And that combined with Autogain is the best feature I ever heard of!
The Soundcraft Ui24r has virtual sound check It also has 8 auxiliaries, subgroups, DCA’s, matrixes, and can (if you are prepared to lose the headphone outs) give you 2 more auxes, making a total of 10 auxes, and it will run on any Wi-Fi or networked device with a browser, no app required
Great video introduction of these mixers with interesting new features. I’m interested in how the automatic input leveller affect the monitor levels ? Normally changing the trims would mess with the monitor send levels. Is there some type of automatic compensation ?
The gain will effect the signal chain all the way through because it's pre the channel options. I would only really set this to specific inputs otherwise your signal paths and gain structure will be changing the whole night. I could see this being really good for a notorious guitar player or a microphone being used by multiple speakers in one session.
"Even if you know your stuff" This is super true. If it was a mysterious black box it would be pretty lame, but given it's showing you the processing that's being applied, this is basically a better version of "presets" Same with the auto-gain. Even though I prefer to gain stuff by hand, sometimes (especially live) the levels end up being quite different, and having the box itself bring stuff up or down to my expected reference level means I can keep a specific IEM mix setup without having to trim everything by hand every time. I wouldn't use stuff like this FOH, but for rehearsals and other situations where I want fast and easy it makes a lot of sense.
I don't need one right now, but I want one of these! I "grew up" on the QU-32 (church and school had the same desk), now don't have as much to do with sound mixing, but still do a little bit here and there, and wow would something like this be useful for so many situations! Just wow
They absolutely need a 24ch version of the CQ20B. I would recommend it for every single House of Worship and venue that I have done audio consulting for.
So I got asked to help with recording a live session today. Had basically no notice. Last minute got told we're using one of these (the stage box guy) and using a mac to control the software for it. I spent maybe 15 minutes at most downloading the software on my pc so I could learn it and reading a little about it online. Got to the session it was super easy to set up. Except for a couple of minutes where we had to turn it off to move it and when we booted it back up I couldn't find it again. Fuck knows why. ANYWAYS it was super simple. Sound checked in seconds, sent everything to logic on the same mac to record. great little box. Would reccomend.
Great product, amazing but Jack is so good at getting the real world scenario incorporated in the demonstration. Spot on!. I love my GSR24M, both of them.
The CQ range seems like if the Behringer X Air series and the Neural DSP Quad Cortex... *hooked up.* (I'm not proud of that pun.) But seriously, the CQ is STACKED with some awesome and thoughtful features! It's definitely rocketed to the top of my list of mixer consideration! Well done Allen & Heath (for the products) and Andertons (for the great video)!
I just got it, as a drummer and runing sound for my band it's a great mixer, only one thing I ask for, can you Add dca's on the next new firmware allen&heath
So I’m using a Soundcraft UI24r in a hybrid mode along with my computer doing some preocessing on my inputs through it and sending some backing tracks while having some channels working in a normal mixer mode. I also had to connect an extra router to it to have a good WIFI connection, default was trash. Would the CQ20B be a step further in my setup? Thanks in advance to anyone joining this conversation.
Interesting little thing, might be a good upgrade for my 1010 bluebox ... and it's so new that I can't even find it on the internet - neither on the Allen & Heath website nor at any reseller 😱
Sadly not. Maybe it will be an xair killer but the x32 range has too many extras that the CQ range doesn't - for example hainv Dante cards or being able to connect external boxes or other x32 units together for additional control.. If the CQ could do that too then yes it would be a killer The only way allen and heath could kill off the x32 range is if they released an SQ rack! Same amazing features as the SQ desks but in rack form with a screen.. that's the only thing missing from the SQ range but sadly CQ is too limited in comparison
This mixer is making sure that it is somewhat fool proof, which I like. The Auto-Gain stuff is nice too, but I'm worried it might affect the gain structure since you can't ride the faders?
If I understand correctly, this is looking for clipping only on the input, so cranking up the fader won't (directly) cause a further reduction in gain. Of course they might end up sliding around gradually over time, but I can't imagine it'd be a huge problem
Hey, great video :) i have a question please, I have to use 5 stereo monitor mixes to IEMs for my band. How many stereo mixes can i get with the CQ-20B? Thanks
Thinking about one of these... there's no way to expand inputs by adding the stage box version though, right? I guess I'd just need to use an analog mixer to submix or get another one of these and feed the output into the stereo in if I really wanted to keep more things plugged in all the time and be able to record all sources separately. Stuff like drum machines can take up 8 inputs for example.
This looks like an exact replica of the Line 6 Stage source M20d from a cople of years back. Did Line 6 sell the mixer/technology to Allen & Heath? Also, I’m a little disappointed that Allen & Heath haven’t changed much in terms of features, functionality and technology from its Line 6 iteration, and that was 8 years ago!!
Actually Line6 mixer is 11 years old... I know, I have it :) And yes, this is almost a iteration of that concept that dissapeared since Yamaha bought Line6
They look nifty but I guess there is no way to expand the inputs other than submixers? My current setup I have 48 in/48 out but Focusrite have stabbed me in the back with no longer updating drivers - so i'll need a whole new interface setup when I next upgrade my music comp-yutter Anyway, hurrah for the 19" rack ears 👍
Looks great. Can inputs be configured as stereo pairs with a single fader on the screen? For example can I have 8 stereo faders on the screen at once for a keyboard setup?
I would like to know if this machine could work as a real multitrack recorder, I mean could I do overdubs with this?, does it have a metronome , record precount....etc?
It’s a mixer. It’s not a DAW. You can multitrack through USB into a DAW, but metronome, count in, and other DAW functionality isn’t built in to the mixer.
Is it possible to use this mixer as a standalone DAW? I recorded a track on my 18t, and can play them back fine. When I arm it to record on another track, I cannot hear the previously recorded track.
What a mind blowing thing in such a small box. I was just about to swap my QU16 for something smaller and i'm so happy i've seen this just on time. Does this thing work with the AR84?
Very interesting .. close it possible to record / overdub individual tracks or is it multitrack in one take only ? Like the zoom l20 re overdubbing feature Thanks !😊
I wish the would have done on the 18t what they did on the 20 by using XLR Aux inputs, and also an extra 1/4” stereo input as well, even if they had to make the box a little bigger, it’s not a deal breaker you can use 1/4 in adapters but still, just one more thing you need. Makes the decision harder though because I don’t have an iPad but I’d get one if I got one of these units.
can the USB B port be used with a laptop running a DAW playing backing tracks on specific USB channels? We use 3 channels from the DAW, 1 mono channel for a click track and then 2 channels L/R for the backing tracks... is that possible with any of these mixers?
,Can the sd card save settings for different venues or even different venues and crowd size? If we have recorded backing tracks and even video sync'd how can we make that work with this. I am looking use it mainly for band gigs, for vocals, instrument amps line out and/or mic'd and mic'd drums.. I have a small yamaha mixxer for my drums that I can send in mono or stero to the main mixer. You also said, with wifi we can connect to it with our phones or ipads for individual iem mix. Is this correct? That is a big plus. I missed if it has its own compression, reverb and maybe a few other effects. Sounds really good to me.
I have a question, when I assign the input signal to the channel, such as USB, will the recordings I can insert only be those recorded by the console or can I use other external media?
I have an old analog board at my church, and running the line out the whole mix does not allow any individual channel control for the livestream. Can you run a separate mix for the livestream on the Cq18t that does not affect what the room is hearing live when I make adjustments to the mix for the livestream?
great demo. one question, do all the digital units on the table record in 48/96 sample rates. meaning I would not need a separate audio interface to convert the analog to digital. correct? thanks in advance
Downloaded the demo and played with it for a bit. No subgroups, no DCAs, limited routing options, only 4 included fixed FXs for the FX sends (with very limited controls). Looks pretty (although the screen isn't much bigger than the average phone screen). Day late, dollar short, I think I'll stick with my Midas MR18 for $400 cheaper.
We have an Xr18 at work for corporate events. It's great in that I can set up all our wireless mics in a rack with the mixer plugged in and set up a bunch of settings for different scenarios then on the day of the event, everything is already mixed. All we have to change on the day is the main fader. The main issues we have though are feedback and the talent not speaking at a suitable distance from the microphone (have to pump up the gain to compensate and usually feedback occurs). The Allen and Heath takes care of both of those issues with someone in my team that isn't that knowledgeable with live sound able to deal with those issues very easily. We will definitely get one of these at some point soon. The subgroups and DCAs are something that could easily be implemented in a software update so I'd be surprised if it doesn't get those features in the next year or so.
I'm using a Yamaha MG10xu for my livingroom setup now - digital piano, mic, synth, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and DAC - so even the 12T would have enough inputs but it only has 2 effects. The 18T and 20B have 4. Would it be a mistake for me to buy the 20B and use an iPad to control it? The 20B is about $300 cheaper than the 18T. Your thought?
1 year later, and it's still one of the best things that you can buy
Bro this thing is a monster , literally raw off the plug in it already sounds amazing
@hugo5353 only thing that needs tweaking out of the box is how you process your mics. But you're right, even just some eq cuts and gain adjusts, it's dope

I just picked one up and it is amazing!
Finally something with auto-gain! I wonder why there are so little amount of auto-gain gear since the roland capture range implemented it
Audient?
yes! but still ! 2 products ranges ? In 2023? Haha @@karmachochi
Yamaha Dugan has been doing it for a long time
Cant wait for my delivery...
At last! Been waiting for something like this from A&H, definitely in!! 😂 I need 2
So great to see Keith here! And yes, the new line is super cute! 🥰
I’m keeping my SQ-7 for the studio, but these are _exacly_ what I was looking for to replace my SQ-5 for live gigs.
Really great demonstration of an awesome product
The CQ range seems like if the Behringer X Air series and the Neural DSP Quad Cortex... *hooked up.*

I need to get saving! This mixer is in a class of it's own!
Fantastic video! Can’t wait to order one.
I’m sold!
Please Sidechain-Compression!!! Then it would be an instant buy…
Great interview and demo, knowledgeable and kind representative from A&H
Thanks for this deep lesson... I will surely buy this gear

would like to see a 32 channel mixer running this software, with physical faders and slink
As I understand it, Allen & Heath's SQ (5,6,7) series is like that.
Can I use this with my Apollo UAD 2 Quad into my Mac M1 Studio? If So I'll buy one today!
This is crazy!!! 🤦🏽♂️ Allen&Heath for the win
mark my words this is gonna be popular maybe even more so than X32

@@jameshukI think the Qu is meant to be the X32 killer in A&H, esp the Qu-32
it seems more refined than anything behringer could make
Wondering if Behringer/MIDAS will release an updated and more modern version of the almost decade old XAir/MR mixers to compete with these mixers.
I just got mine. I love it !!
Allen and Heath making great stuff again
Wow very user-friendly and easy to use ... Good stuff thanks Allen & Heath
A great device! Is it possible to expand the inputs? Chain a device?
Really useful product demo!
Is there any scope for custom fader layers?

Yes. It’s pretty nice to have an option for my desk headphones and keep my mix separate from the headphone amp feeding my booths.
When you record to the SD card by itself, does it record the whole mix or can it record into individual audio stems? Thanks.
How does the auto-gain function also maintain dynamics?
Are these class compliant?
Even for home use, if I'm gonna use an iPad anyway, should get the 20B instead of the 18T and save $300? Am i missing anything?
great demo. one question, do all the digital units on the table record in 48/96 sample rates. meaning I would not need a separate audio interface to convert the analog to digital. correct? thanks in advance
Yes, they both can be set up to record with either sample rate you mentioned
I did not find any compressor sidechain functionality in the app in offline mode. Is sidechain compression possible?
Downloaded the demo and played with it for a bit. No subgroups, no DCAs, limited routing options, only 4 included fixed FXs for the FX sends (with very limited controls). Looks pretty (although the screen isn't much bigger than the average phone screen). Day late, dollar short, I think I'll stick with my Midas MR18 for $400 cheaper.
Limited control of FXs is deal breaker for me
FX are not fixed, try an actual unit.
Used it for the first time today.. It's awful.. Would take an xair over this!
Yeah there’s always going to be someone who doesn’t like something or has a bad experience. I think it’s pretty sweet.
Just got my 20B. I’m having trouble with the learning curve coming from the XR/midas digital mixers.
Will there be any tutorials coming ?
HOW WAS ITT
Went smoother than anticipated.
Quick question... does it fit Logic Pro (I guess yes)?
Are you going to provide support for 41.1 KHZ?
Is there a way to connect to the CQ with an iPad to control the volume send to the headphones and still play music via spotify with that same ipad?
You can control your in ear mix from your phone. Great, but can you use your phone with earbuds as your in ear system? That would be super powerful.
I'd be interested if there was a complete-non-teccie control app option, for the vicar or the bar staff, like there is with the Qu series.
There is. Check it out
Zdravím, dá se Allen & Heath CQ 12 ovládat přes nějaký kontroler s použitím Bome BomeBox ?
Any idea what the network cable is for? It would be great to have a stage box that connected via Cat6.
Why not have a sd card with a band on it during this demo to show how this actually works? As it was said you can do.
Can you use this to mix already recorded tracks from a DAW?
