I think when people mention inconsistency with UConn, they tend to think of the Ollie years in particular. 4 of those missed tournament years were with Ollie in the AAC. I know it happened, but the Calhoun years were pretty damn consistent...

Anyone that thinks UConn during the Calhoun era was "inconsistent" doesn't know what the hell they're talking about, and I see that opinion everywhere. The only timeframe where UConn was bad during the last 40 years has been during the Ollie years and they STILL won a title during that period.

After the 14 title and the 16 conference title, Kevin Ollie got divorced. The same year he was fired he complained to reporters that his players weren't spending enough time in the gym. Once his personal life imploded he quit on the program. He stopped recruiting and couldn't develop his players. The program was such a disaster that even in his press conferences on his way to his 1st National Championship Dan Hurley was still complaining about the mess he took over in a really passive-aggressive way blaming Ollie without ever mentioning Ollie. As bad as the AAC was for UConn it was really Ollie falling apart as a person, not just a coach. Sports media outside of CT don't have any idea how ugly things got within the program.

We here in UConn are besides ourselves with envy vis a vis the true blue bloods. Those 5 titles in 24 years are small consolation knowing that we can't sit at the cool kids table. Crushed I tell you. Beating Duke in 99. Small potatoes. Beating Duke again in 2004. Who cares. Kemba and the miracles. Took little solace watching them knowing that no one thought out team was worthy. The 2014 run when the huskies beat . Let me check...the blue bloods from Kentucky. Yet UConn I guess was still not worthy of elite designation. Gosh that hurts. Well we got consolation prize number 5 this week. We are no longer depressed at our non blue blood status. We are coping. Best we can. Wondering now if we have to switch hands if and when we get ring number 6. Non UConn fans you just don't know the agony of being a non blue blood. We are tortured beyond words. Weep for us.

UConn at 5! So happy! Why is debating whether they are 'blue blood' even a thing? Call them whatever you want but they've won more titles in the past quarter century than anybody. Three straight coaches have won titles, can any other school even say that? So proud of Calhoun, Ollie and Hurley!
Only three schools have more men's titles than UConn. All but one of UCLA's titles came during a magical run 50 years ago (that is something that will never be repeated by anybody). One of North Carolina's titles came in the 1950s - great decade but college basketball was quite different back then! To say it another way, UConn has as many titles as UNC does since MJ cut down the nets in 1982. Four of Kentucky's eight titles came in the Adolf Rupp era of the 1940s and 50s. Ancient history in basketball terms.
I'm not trying to take away from the accomplishments or diminish the historical importance of the other programs, but clearly UConn has done something since 1999 that no other school can touch. Throw in a women's program that has been the best and most successful since the mid-90s, and this is why Storrs, Connecticut is the self-proclaimed College Basketball Capital of the World. You win, you get to brag a little - and Huskies fans don't really care if they are part of the blue blood club or not.

When y'all were talking about UConn being 5-0, it reminded me of how we talk about Michael Jordan. UConn being 5-0 in title games is amazing and doesn't negate the 7 years they've missed the tournament. Jordan being 6-0 in the NBA finals is amazing, but doesn't negate the other 9 years he played and didn't make the finals. #context is important, as Ovies always says.

People hated seeing it because the Notre Dames and Oklahoma, and Nebraska fans weren't used to seeing that. Same with UCONN!
