as a black, lgbtq person who grew up and is living in a deeply religious household, i thank you for this video. i'm slowly trying to separate myself from christanity but it's really hard when you're still surrounded by it and forced to participate. it's part of what caused me to be so emotionally unavailable and i feel the gap between me and my peers **heavily.** i never had the words to explain until watching this, so thank you ♡
Thank you for making this. I am 30 and even though I have been out for a long time I still really struggle with the trauma I experienced as a child because of my religious grandmother. I am glad you are talking about these issues because so many queer people really need help well into their adulthood. These issues tend to chase us our entire lives.

when i was younger I vividly remeber one of the women in church giving her “testimony” and basically she was a reformed stud. They showed pictures of her before and after and everything. Everyone in the church was so happy for her that she was no longer masc and lesbian……Im just now realizing how much that has impacted me and the way I view other lesbians, thus affecting the way I view myself. It’s made me wonder if I’m just transitioning because I don’t want to be looked at as a lesbian…but i don’t rly think that’s the case…Idk i’m still figuring it out, transitioning while non binary is hella confusing for me
Sorry you had to see that… and those things can definitely hangers and impact on your perception. And only you know what’s right for you with transition! Keep trusting your gut!
What an inspiration your courage and pride is. I'm 51 yrs of age. Growing up ' tomboy' in my day was something I was supposed to grow out of. I had no awareness of women being attracted to women, all I knew was that my difference was totally intollerated and that gays were legally incarcerated and got bashed and killed by ' good men ' and that was applauded. It was terrifying. Coming out to conservative Christian family at 22 was met with the stuff you talk about. After a while I realised that being on the receiving end of their religious abuse was ruining my adult life. Fast forward to the 21st century and evangelical lobbyists put these ' brokenness ' and ' demon possesed sinner ' narratives into billions of media, globally. So, even folks who don't have the misfortune of a rejecting religious family have to be gassed by the same toxic messaging about themselves across the internet, in textbooks, in film and screen etc relentlessly now. I don't know how such an empire of patriarchal compulsory hetero and gender conformity will meet demise... all empires do eventually. ... Obviously it is fragile, or it wouldn't need all the structural inequality devices of bans, erasure and weakness narratives and divisiveness to keep us ' in our place '. Thanks for putting your voice to the mic and making yourself seen. As real as we are, we are not going away. 😊
Hi! I'm not trans but I wanted to express my support from one black LGBTQ person to another. Whenever I bring this up, I get shouted down that your ethnicity=Christian Fundamentalism and questioning your religious upbringing is a "white people thing" which is so unnecessary and reductive. I am so happy for you being you! Wish you well with your channel.
Thanks so much for sharing this. Religious fundamentalism is so strong in the black community and being black and agnostic seem irreconcilable sometimes. Proud of you for doing the deconstruction work!!
The one thing I hesitate on is this idea that we're not inherently flawed. Of course we are. We're all imperfect and ignorant and in a constant process of growth and change. We will never be perfect or have all the answers. And accepting that takes so much pressure off. I think that is what Christianity teaches: that our value does not depend on perfection, or being normal, and that we are loved unconditionally. And it's sad that despite that teaching being 100% fundamental to Christianity, so much of Evangelical culture conditions love and community on compliant behaviour.
All queerphobia is reprehensible, but I think Christians being against asexuality is nonsensical since Jesus literally refers to them (while generally commending celibacy) in Matthew 19:11-12
