    I have to say, I think everyone is overstating the issues. I didn't think the gutter loss was that terrible and to be honest the Omnibus had just as much. I guess I am one of the few that think this Absolute is awesome. Looks gorgeous to me. It's over 800 pages, if it was not glued it would fall apart. I'm definitely buying this.
    Now 2 weeks later my Absolute Planetary is in and man... this thing is gorgeous. Highly recommend.

    Also... at 9:10 the Absolute clearly has gutter loss, but it's the end of the book so of course it's there. At 11:06 the end of the Omnibus has the exact same issues.

    Love the Omnibus and thought about upgrading, but not with that binding. Also there is a huge price gap, you get the Omnibus for 50€ all the time but the absolute is 120-150€.

    This is one massive beast of a book. Actually it was your Video, tha hinted me if its existance.
    I even managed, after thorough examination and your argument, that it might simply be overglued to open the eye of the mammoth.
    Take a long, thin and slim knive (bread/meat/kitchen) and then work your way through.
    Otherwise the Absolute (the A-Line is killing me anyway) is a huge improvement of Planetary.
    It is my 18th kn the Absolute Collection by now. Greetings from Vienna, Austria, Europe.
    Stay save & healthy.

    Currently the Absolute is just over $100 (it's $104) on amazon. Though I hate to give Bezos any more of my money the Absolute being 2x the Omni instead of 3x makes it worthwhile to me. Worst case I can take the book to a bookbinder and have them do a little magic.
    Great review. Thanks for the info.
    It seems like you are trying to refrain from providing your opinion on which version is better. I think having your preference would be helpful. Even if that preference is a minor skew in one direction over another. I write this as a comic/graphic novel dabbler who is really enjoys these books, but is not obsessive over them. The opinion of someone like you who is an obvious hardcore hobbyist would help me (and perhaps people like me) with our decision. :)

    Great video! I saw on Facebook that someone said it’s just excess glue that’s holding the binding to the spine. They’ve got pics of it separated and binding lifts up now. I haven’t got this book yet so I can’t vouch that it works myself and obviously it a seems kinda risky with such a nice/pricey book but worth mentioning.

    Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to decide which version to get myself. I have to say, I understand why DC takes these steps to add glue and/or glue the block to the spine. That absolute is massive!
    Sometimes the Marvel omnies worry me. They lay nice and appear to have great binding but those huge eyes make me wonder if the book will fall apart sooner than later.

    • @ComicBound
      @ComicBound  3 года назад +2

      I'm really glad if you found this video useful! :)
      And yeah, this is an absolute (no pun intended!) beast of a book! I can see why they were worried about not gluing it down, but I don't know why they didn't simply release 2 books. They did it this way in the past. It's a strange one!
      And regarding the Marvel omnis, I don't really think the eyes on them are much of a cause for concern. As long as a book is constructed well, having a large eye is actually a pretty good thing for a number of reasons. I'm really not too concerned with the durability of any of my Marvel omnis, they are for the most part really well made. They should hold up pretty well over time with multiple re-reads.
      Thanks a lot for watching this video, and for taking the time to leave a comment :)

    • @brianschmitzer6722
      @brianschmitzer6722 3 года назад +1

      I share your concern about the books with really large eyes. A couple of mine (Secret Invasion & The New X-Men by Morrison) have started to have issues.. #1) The eyes have lost their arch-shape and now form a triangle shape when opened. #2) The ribbons have started to detach from the block. I know this problem is fixable, and is not exclusive to larger-eyed omnis, but when combined with the first problem I mentioned, it just feels like the book is about to fall apart when I read it.
      For this reason, I'm starting to prefer the smaller, less flexible, eyes on my omnis. The gutter loss is minimal and doesn't really affect my reading enjoyment at all, and they feel much more durable to me.
      Any thoughts on the subject, from anyone with an opinion, would be greatly appreciated. I've only been reading/collecting omnis for a year and a half, and most of you have more experience than I do.

    Great overview. Could you confirm whether there's actually any new comic content in the Absolute, or if there are new extras? The Absolute solicit lists a longer page count and differs from previous ones only in its explicit mention of Gen13 #33, which is one of the two places the Planetary Preview first appeared, the story of which was already included in all of the prior collections,

    • @a_teonnai-ki8049
      @a_teonnai-ki8049 3 года назад

      Amazon description lists the following content: Gen13 #33, Planetary #1-27, Planetary Vol. 1: All Over the World and Other Stories, Planetary/Batman: Night On Earth #1, Planetary Vol. 2: The Fourth Man, Planetary: All Over the World and Other Stories, Planetary: Crossing Worlds, Planetary Vol. 3: Leaving the 20th Century, Absolute Planetary Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Planetary Vol. 4: Spacetime Archaeology, Wildstorm: A Celebration of 25 Years. I wonder if it is correct. But 2 original Absolutes combined are 704 pages. New version is 880 pages.

    • @ComicBound
      @ComicBound  3 года назад +7

      Hey thanks for your comment! Apologies for getting back to you so slowly but I've been pretty busy and only just found the time to sit down and go through each book to try and compare the content. As best as I can tell, the omnibus and absolute include the exact same comic content, apart from the absolute also includes the Planetary Preview from Gen13 #33. I could not find this anywhere in the omnibus, and it wasn't listed in the small info text in the start of the omnibus. I tried my best to flick through the book to look for it with no success, and also there's no table of contents which doesn't help!
      There is probably around a 15 page increase in the absolute (865ish for the omnibus, 880 for the absolute). I think around 10 pages of this is the Planetary Preview, and the rest seems to mostly be a few added pages of extras and also the way they have formatted the book with the start and end pages being a bit different. It's definitely not anything substantial in terms of the added extras, just a couple of pages talking about action figures and a two page spread with imagery of the snowflake by Laura Martin. Oh and the absolute includes 2 pages for a table of contents that the omnibus doesn't. There may be a few more differences but it's hard to do a direct comparison when they've changed the ordering of some of the content (some of the crossover issues are inserted between the issues of the main story in the absolute, in the omni they are all at the end) and also collapsed the introduction by Alan Moore down into 1 page.
      Anyway unless I'm missing something, that should be most of the main differences.
      Thanks a lot for watching the video. I hope you found it useful! And thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂

      Haha yeah! Actually this is my second upgrade. I initially had all 4 of the TPB books, then upgraded to the omni. I never got around to re-reading it in omni format though before the absolute was announced, and for me the idea of having the John Cassiday artwork in absolute size was worth another upgrade. It's a shame about the binding, but I figure I might still keep the absolute and sell my omni.

    This should have had two books in the one slip case and charge an extra 15-20 odd bucks. Skinting on this is not good... No way this would work without gluing the binding to the cover though...

  • @mike6526
    @mike6526 3 года назад

    Im sure its just a matter of DC using more glue due to the size of the book. Im sure u can separate the block from the spine with a little persuasion.

    • @ComicBound
      @ComicBound  3 года назад +2

      Well it's pretty firmly glued! I think it would take more than a little persuasion... more like blackmail!
      Saying that, I am slightly tempted to try and pry it apart somehow, but not only do I risk damaging such an expensive book in the process, there's also the risk that once it's free and separated it might just not hold together very well. Hmm.... I'm not saying I would, but if I ever do attempt such a feat I will be sure to make a video about it! Not sure how likely that is though :P

    I prefer DC to Marvel overall but why they cannot adopt the same binding quality that Marvel uses is beyond me. Just irresponsible to the fans as they've known for years that their binding quality is substandard. Nice video, will check out what others you have.

    • @ComicBound
      @ComicBound  3 года назад

      Yeah it does seem that the general consensus is that people are a lot happier with the binding on the Marvel books when compared to DC. Although there have been a few disappointed reactions to some of the more recent Marvel omnis, so maybe that line is getting blurrier these days. I think the real shame with this one is that the Absolute format is supposed to be the real pinnacle of the premium collected editions. And it's hard to defend a glued binding like this. They definitely had other options that they could have considered. It's a real shame.
      Thanks a lot for watching, and thanks for if you check out any of my other videos! I really appreciate it! :)

      I've actually not encountered any other absolutes with the binding glued down, so that's really useful info. Thanks for sharing it! I'm not sure how I feel though learning that this isn't the first time they've done this! I honestly thought you could always rely on the absolute format to deliver a real premium experience, but it's a bit worrying that it doesn't actually seem to be the case!

    • @ComicBound
      @ComicBound  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Yeah I completely agree with some of the comments about this book saying that it would have made more sense to split into 2 books. They still could have included them in the one slipcase. Hell, most people would have probably happily paid for 2 regular full price absolutes! Sometimes I get the feeling that DC are intent on putting out the most amount of pages of their content in the least amount of book releases as possible. Hence all the massive omnis.
