He finally covered it… I never thought I’d see the day where he covered it..! He’s played this song on the speakers at the beginning of each and every one of his shows since as long as I can remember. I remember seeing him in Omaha back in 2013. I was just an awkward teenager who wanted to meet their musical idol. I met him outside the venue after the show for a conversation because I wanted to thank him for blessing and saving my life with his music. He was very kind hearted and soft spoken and so approachable! Our conversation lasted for what seemed like a whole hour. During our conversation, I asked him. “Is that you singing that song in the beginning of your show? It sounds incredible!” He replied “Oh, that? Hahaha, no no. That’s just a song that means a lot to me so I let it introduce myself.” He said that the lyrics of the song don’t translate very well in English to fully depict the emotional meaning behind the song. But he told me to just listen to it and that I’d understand. He then wrote the name of the song and the artist’s name on the back of a piece of paper that I was holding (the set list) and gifted it back to me. And to this very day, I still have that piece of paper tucked away in my vinyl copy of “Dark Bird is Home” and I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life.. If you’re reading this.. Thank you Kristian Matsson, for not only being the Tallest Man in the world. But the Tallest Man in my life. You are genuinely my hero and I admire the positive and loving energy that you put out into this world. I sincerely hope to see you again and watch you preform someday..
*English translated lyrics:* You say that love was never for you That you never felt the wind high above the treetop You say it splits at the cheek And will be whole again behind you Every cloud is broken You count everything sad all night long And she you once loved And maybe still love Does it matter? No, maybe not Maybe everything really You say 'do you have matches?' Yes enough if you want to burn down Stockholm And do you have wine and spirits? So that it is enough to get the whole bay full of sorrows Everything, it's too late Too late for wine, too late for love pure as snow Tonight there is no going back And you're wondering who's kissing her now You wonder who Who if not you And the lips, you called yours It hurts to know But just as painful to wonder You say 'do you have matches?' Yes enough if you want to burn down Stockholm 'And do you have wine and spirits?' So that it is enough to get the whole bay full of sorrows Everything, it's too late Too late for wine, too late for love pure as snow Tonight there is no going back, no one at all Too late for edelweiss No one at all Too late for edelweiss No one at all Too late for edelweiss
First heard this song as your walk-on when I saw you live for the first time. I don't speak much swedish but I learned all the lyrics and fell in love. Needless to say I have been waiting on this particular cover of Håkan's song for a while and it is just as beautiful as I imagined it. Much love from the states Kristian!
Kristian, Your mother tongue becomes you so beautifully. It fits the incredibly beautiful melancholy of your voice and entire being, it seems. Maybe it’s time to pull a “Ryan Adams 1989” and do an entire Håkan Hellström record. Thanks for the beautiful videos during the pandemic.
No idea what he’s saying. Not even sure what language this is. Swedish? He’s from Sweden, right? Doesn’t matter. Beauty and emotional clarity transcend words. Chills. What a beautiful song.
The start of the second verse roughly says "oh you wonder who kisses her now, oh you wonder who, who if not you. Oh the lips you used to call yours, it hurts to wonder, it hurts as much to know". One of my favorite lyrics of all time. Original is from like 2006 by fellow Swede Håkan Hellström.

He played it in one of his lockdown livestreams too. 9 mins into the "I will play weather of a killing kind" video if you want to see it
Beautiful History
Omg no wonder it sounded so familiar!! Love it
That's so beautiful
