- In this video we review the drains and gutter system on a Jeep Grand Cherokee Sunroof Moonroof water leak. They have the same design on a couple of other platforms and the same repair process applies. I want to thank you for watching and I value your comments. I have some links attached for tools that I use regularly at Eagle Auto Shop.

This can be done simply without having to remove any pieces of the headliner or pilar. Just get a small piece of tubing and stick it into the sunroof drain hole, and attach the other end to your compressor / air gun. Does the exact same thing with very very minimal work.
But he said that the tube was broken and it actually shattered when he blew air into the holes... Chrysler could have made them tubes out of copper, it should have cost a few bucks more but No! They are no Toyota unfortunately...
@@freedom_aint_free You completely Right.. And there is More..This Jeep gr Cherokee from 2005/10 They come from the Factory WITHOUT a Cabin Air Filter..So not surprised..
My 2007 jeep grand Cherokee has the same problem thank you I appreciate you making this video now I Know what to do
I hope it helps with your Jeep. Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for the vid! The only other suggestion I would have added is to use the compressed air to blow out & vacuum up the valley channel of any debris, i.e. leaves, dirt, sand, seeds, twigs, ..., that collects the water as a precautionary measure in preventing future blockages.
Got an 06 and came out after a nice storm. Drivers floor had about 10 gallons of water on it. Can’t go thru car washes either lol. Thanks for the vid
Zac, hope it was helpful info........
@@EagleAutoshop Hey thank you for the reply! Watched your video at work then went home and got it done in no time. Now I can go through the car wash!!
@@SpaghettiAuto Awesome, can't tell you how great that is knowing it was helpful. Thanks for watching!!!
I used a piece of round weed eater/trimmer line as a pipe cleaner. Plus a condiment squeeze bottle to squirt water into the tubing and got both sides unclogged and draining.
I have this issue too. Drivers side leaks and drips water on my knee. I park under a tree that drops a lot off stuff on my car. I’m hoping it’s just clogged gutters. Thanks for sharing the step by step for this process.
Thanks so much, I hope this information helps you get resolution on your vehicle!
Thanks my friend!!!
Mine has the very same problem, I'll do that, thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. I hope it was informative...😎
needed this so bad thanks! been having a leak problem from this for about a month thought i had fixed it but after 2 days of raining its happened again
Dylan, thats awesome! I am glad it was good information for you.
Thanks for sharing. I had a same issue. Looks like I can fix it now
You mentioned there are a few adjustments that can be done if the sunroof is not sitting as it should. What are they? Thanks.
There are bolts that hold the glass into the frame and by loosening and moving the glass you can get slight adjustments for flush.
@@pastorvincentnader9236 Thank you!
Thank You for your video. 🤝🤝🤝
Great video , can you supply the information to recalibrate 2006 grand cherokee as moon roof wont close fully thanks.
James, thanks so much. Here is the procedure for calibration.
Press the power sunroof switch (Open, Closed, and Vent). If no movement occurs when either the open switch or closed switch is pressed, but the system does move when the vent button is pressed and held, the system is not calibrated. Perform the following procedure to position calibrate the power sunroof system.
1.Turn the ignition to the RUN position.
2. Press the vent button on the power sunroof switch and hold until the sunroof glass panel has moved to the full vent position and the motor movement has stopped for at least 1 second.
3. Press the close switch on the power sunroof switch and hold for a moment (at least 100ms) and release. The sunroof glass panel should continue travel to the full close position. If the sunroof glass panel does not return to the full close position, refer to the appropriate diagnostic information for full system diagnosis.
4. Verify proper system operation.
Thanks best how to for my keep I haven’t had a leak sense
Ryan, thats great news glad you found the information helpful.
Where does the drain exit the vehicle
I was thinking of using a vacuum on it to clear it instead of compressed air from the top????
Everyone seems to forget about the rear sunroof drains! The water will run over the back rubs and run down the head liner to the front
@@Mindyourbusiness6665 I had to drop the headliner a little and could access them from the back door above the handles I had to blow them out it’s not bad, the hoses goes down by the back windows down into the rocker panels and no way to access the end
@@Mindyourbusiness6665 I knew my rear drains was clogged after it rained hard and I went up a hill then back to flat roads so all that water that wouldn’t go out the rear drains poured over them and ran down the headliner to the front and started coming out the handles checked the front drains and there was zero issues checked the back by pouring water in them and they wouldn’t not drain
@@Mindyourbusiness6665 luckily mine is a 1 owner and I currently have 49k on it
If you need a quick way to stop the leak until you have the time to fix it properly, sealing the exterior edges of the sunroof with electrical tape works. Then just peal off the tape when you're ready to do a proper repair. Easier to remove than silicon caulk.
Exactly where are rear drain tubes? Drivers floor is soaked still after doing the front drains. Help!
Turns out my drain tubes are clear. It was the sunroof not totally closing in the rear. Hold in the close button for 60 seconds (mine was the partial rise not open/close) and sunroof will reset it itself to close properly. This right here should be your 1st attempt, so easy. Sure would of saved me tons of work!
Oh Nooooo... The rear drain tubes are in the B-Pillar and it requires removing the headliner and all trim on the pillars to see them. Usually the front ones are the concern but you would need to perform a leak test (one person outside and one in the vehicle) using a water source to locate where it is actually entering the cab. Hope that helps.....😎
If you hear lot of wind noise coming from the sunroof when it's closed it's likely not the tubes getting plugged up just the seal.
Roof racks in certain positions can cause noise as well........😎
@@EagleAutoshop Didn't make all that wind noise before. We owned it since 2005 when it was new. That rack was factory.
@blastman8888 Yup, I am referring to factory racks. Wind noise and water leaks can be challenging. Thanks for your input on them.......👍
Do y’all guys work out of a shop in Fairfield? I need mine fix.
Yeah I have the 65 anniversary version of this car and I have water spots on my floor and all over the car. Where can I go to get this fixed? I got this off a lot sitting for years.
Do you have a reputable repair shop in your area? You could start by testing with water to see if you can identify the location of the leak. Climate makes a difference as well, hotter climates tend to damage the drain tubes as the plastic dries out. The other cause would be plugged with debris. Less intrusive repair and can sometimes be cleared with compressed air.
Did it ever come back w leaks l got same problem l checked gutters water flows ? But get water leaks when it storms hard
No luck for me. Passenger side leaks on the floor and causes the sunglass holder to leak also. I tried the line and compressor. Can't imagine how much dealer will charge.
Where do you set the glass on your sun roof I have the same problem with my 2006 Jeep Cherokee
John, so there is an adjustment on the track that holds the glass, the glass does however need to be in the (park) fully closed position Flush with roof. On the 06 I needed to slightly touch the center of the switch to get the module to keep the glass in the fully closed position. Once in that position you do get 1/8 to 1/4 inch adjustment out of the four corners where the glass attaches to the track. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
Cant you prep clean , and just use really good contractor clear silicone and seal it permanent?
Well, I guess you could but that reminds me of seeing a bag on a window, instead of fixing the regulator....😎
@@EagleAutoshop yes i agree, just money i dont have i need more than a drain clean, tried open to clean, only open part way tried help by hand, heard a snap? Like plastic crack, i mamaged get it down, get in a fiends garage, im in Canada so cold, i just prepped edges good with glass cleaner, caulked with a GE contractor silicon, and just pray holds up till i can afford to fix right, a sunroof not in my budget, but if water gets in im wrecking one of most valuable assets, its kinds like doing a tar roof patch, when you don't have thousands to replace, thanks for your reply sir 👍
@@daleval2182 Oh yea, Canada very brisk, but great hockey= Go Leafs! I found that these older ones have trouble with the park or relearn closed operation. I have to play with the switch to get some to a full closed position. The newer ones have a better calibration reset procedure and work much better. It's like Wrangler water leaks, when you build a car that the customer can take the roof and doors off, you are going to have leak issues. Lol Same with cutting a hole in your roof. Ford had the best design in the 50's with 1/2 a glass roof for some of their models. Skyliners I believe they were called.
I have a 08 and same problem but water is comming thru the top center console too
Yes so chances are the gutter system may be just plugged if you are not seeing water in the A-PILLAR area. That center console can be removed and headliner lowered a bit in the front with visors down for a better visual inspection. One person inside doors closed with light and one person outside provided water to further isolate the entry point. I used to hate to be the guy in the trunk for rear leaks at the Dealer. Lol
@@EagleAutoshop yea man ive tried everything and i cant figure it out, i guess it can leak forever lol it only does it when we get super duper rain lol
Clear drain holes in corner
Have 2006 Grand Cherokee. Big leak on front passenger carpet. Wasn't clogged sunroof drain tube. Problem was a small separation in painted body caulk on exterior where a-pillar meets roof panel. Have to remove plastic moulding on side of windshield, and peel back weatherstrip at that upper corner. Applied "windshield & glass sealant(allowable silicone caulk)" around this painted blob of caulk making sure it filled the slight separation. The clear silicone set up semi-hard. Not a drop of water inside since.
@@davidmyers2529 Nice. I have seen a few of those on newer vehicles when I worked at new car dealers. Wouldn’t expect that on an older model. What is the climate like where you live or has it been collision repair would be my question?
When I pour water in the sunroof by the holes it doesn't exit at the bottom do you think it's just backed up and I need an air compressor?
Noel, yes best practice would be to start with compressed air. In a hotter climate the tubes that run down the A-pillar can crack and leak, but starting with compressed air would be the simplest first step. Thanks for watching we appreciate you!
What if I don’t have a compressor? Will can air do? Probably not huh.
So I have never tried that and am not sure that the pressure would be great enough or sustainable enough to clear the blockage.
My jeep 2004 leaked it was drain holes stopped up I fixed it with c r c in holes then I ran weed eater line down them. Wala fixed
wat is crc??
Would've appreciated instructions on adjusting - or at least lubricating - the sunroof mechanism while you were performing it; but an excellent video otherwise.
Thanks so much!!!😂😂😂😂😂
