    Next is "Hallelujah"! Amazing performance.

Yes! Others may have already mentioned, but you'll see a different bass singer in Hallelujah. Avi was their original bass. He left the group in 2017 and is now doing fantastic solo music. He was replaced by Matt (the man in the white jacket). That's the only change in PTX's lineup, the other 4 have been the same since the group formed although Mitch (shortest guy) and Kirstie often change their hair & overall style. Many people new to their music will think one of them is a different person because of this - especially Mitch as his weight fluctuated a bit earlier in their career.

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RUclips, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RUclips videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RUclips), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RUclips, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

On Pentatonix: There really isn't a traditional "lead" singer for the group. As in this song, they often swap the lead so that everyone has a chance. They also have songs where a single person takes the lead throughout the entire song, or songs where a couple of them share the lead for the song. It all just depends on what they feel the song needs.
I'm sure others will give you complete backgrounds on the group and it's individual members in the comments on your video! Just be aware, the Pentatonix discography is around 200+ songs, so there are a lot of choices for your next reaction. And once you start reacting to Pentatonix videos, the Pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) will come flocking to your channel for more!
On reacting to music videos: #1 don't be afraid to pause, back up and replay something that caught your ear, especially if you want to point it out to your listeners. If you do pause to comment, back up the video a few seconds to make sure you haven't missed something in preparing to stop it - I've seen any number of reactors miss something because they stopped just as something interesting started, and didn't pick up on it when they restarted the video.
Pausing also helps get you past the RUclips copyright 'bots, but often it alone isn't enough - especially with Pentatonix, whose record label (Sony Music Entertainment, aka SME) is kind of notorious for copyright blocks. You may have to cut down on the opacity of the playback video, or put a graphic overlay on top of it to get it past the YT bots. Just please don't mess with the audio! For Pentatonix videos, don't worry too much about modifying them - all of the Pentaholics have seen the videos multiple times already; we're here for your reaction, not the video playback.

So you're not confused going forward, there has only been one change of band members. Avi (Ah-Vee) was the original bass singer (long hair and beard). He was replaced later with Matt, seen here on the far left.
Note: As far as the rest of the members go, If you find yourself asking "Is that Kirsty?" or "Is that Mitch?", the answer is always YES.

Pentatonix is THE a capella group. Check out their 90s Dance Medley to see a really fun version of what they can do with their voices, including Kevin's killer beatboxing and Matt's bass! Also, live? They're absolutely incredible. I've seen them 4 times since 2012, they've come so far but they've always been perfection! Another thing to note is there has only been one member change in PTX - in 2017 their bass Avi left the group and was replaced by Matt (white jacket) who is in this video.

They are exceptional groups. All have a huge range. Scott , the first singer is a baritone , Mitch the second singer is a true counter tenor with a seven octace range from baritone to soprano 1 Matt is is base who can hit very high note also and Kirstie is mezzo-soprano with a range from alot to first soprano. They have a huge catalog of both voers and originals . They don't record anything that can't perform live . They have maintained a down to earth humble personalities even though they have been singing together 13 years. They have three grammmys and have been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame. They sing all types of music from rap to gospel.

Check out their cover of Imagine and Mad World. Both are incredible and don't get enough love. I'm also partial to their collabs with Dolly Parton and Lindsey Sterling. For future reference in singing order is Scott, Mitch, Matt, and Kirsti, and Kevin is the beat boxer. Scott, Mitch, and Kirsti went to high school together, Kevin was added when they went on... the singing competition show who's name I forgot, and Matt was a replacement for Avi.
My 2 cents, if you aren't familiar with the songs already Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here", "Learning to Fly", "Hey You", and "See Emily Play" are some of my favorite songs, but all get looked over for songs like Time and Money-- both are good, but the catalog has so many others that deserve love

Ooh! I've never expected you to react to music, and one of my favorite bands no less.
Pentatonix is a multiplatnium, Grammy award winning accapella group that formed in 2011 for an acapella competion tv show called "the sing off". Just a heads up, in their 12 years of being a group, they've only had one member change.
Here are the members of PTX:
Scott: 1st singer, Blond Baritone, sometimes covers the low end when the bass sings a solo.
Mitch: 2nd singer our resident Siren/Angel, countertenor
Matt: 3rd singer, Bass since 2017
Kirstie: 4th singer, beautiful Mezzo soprano
    Kevin: Beatboxer, cellist, insanley talented
Avi: not in this video, previous Bass from 2011-2017 smoothest deep voice I've ever heard, like butter.
So, if you want any reccomendations, I'd suggest Hallelujah, its one of their most popular videos; and their Daft punk medley, which won them their first Grammy. if you'd rather do your own thing that's cool too, there are loads of covers, medleys, original songs, ans even christmas music to choose from! have fun!
So excited for you to go down this rabbit hole! the Pentaholics are a very loyal fanbase.

Pentatonix is an a cappella group consisting of, from left to right, Matt Sallee (bass, percussion), Kirstin Maldonado (soprano), Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor) and Kevin Olusola (baritenor, beatboxer, percussion, cello). Kirstin, Scott and Mitch went to school together in Arlington, Texas. The trio were then joined by Kevin and Avi Kaplan (Matt replaced Avi in 2017). They won the 3rd season of NBC's The Sing-Off in 2011 but gained worldwide attention after posting cover versions of modern pop songs along with original songs on RUclips. They have released 11 albums (including 6 Christmas albums) and 6 EPs. They have won 3 Grammy's and earlier this year they received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Pentatonix, as suggested by Scott, is named after the pentatonic scale, a musical scale with 5 notes per octave, representing the 5 members of the group.
I literally saw them live 2 months ago in Iceland and they performed this song! I waited for that concert for over 3 years because it kept getting rescheduled due to Covid and it was so worth the wait! They are even better live.
Absolutely react to more PTX! I suggest Evolution of Music, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Daft Punk medley, Radioactive feat. Lindsey Stirling, Mary Did You Know, Carol of the Bells, Little Drummer Boy, White Winter Hymnal, Silent Night, That's Christmas To Me, Say Something, Can't Sleep Love, Sing, Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Can't Help Falling In Love, Jolene feat. Dolly Parton, Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) and 90s Dance Medley.

Fun reaction! Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. They all sing, including the beatboxer. You mention that their voices make them sound so full - in the Sing Off competition, one of the judges remarked that even with just 5 members, they sound so big! They just get better and better. The bass back then was Avi Kaplan, who left eventually to go solo, but both bass singers have incredible voices.

A former{ founding} member of Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan, has a phenomenal solo career of mainly original work~ He is a classically trained Basso Profundo singer/songwriter with a uniquely beautiful voice, gently heard in his "Avi Kaplan, All Is Well, 7 Layers Session #126" ~ Then listen to his powerful "Change on the Rise" ~ or switch over to his jamming " When I'm A Fool, Live at Sunset Sound" All three songs are completely different, all are amazing, and are just the tip of the talent Avi possesses! Very much hoping that you react to him. The Sound of Silence is one of my favorites by Pentatonix with Matt. Great reaction! New subscriber~

Welcome to PTX! There is so much in this rabbit hole to enjoy, you have no idea, yet, but if you continue, we’re here for it! You did just about perfect as far as your stopping and your commentary. You very quickly picked up on some key elements that made this arrangement special. Don’t doubt yourself, you don’t have to major in music theory to talk about music. Basic info, there are a total of six members, five at a time. About halfway through their career their original bass, Avi, left and was replaced by Matt (on the far left, here). The rest of the members remain the same, but Mitch (second from right) and Kirstin change up their style dramatically and often, so it may be confusing at first, but it’s always them. The one you pegged as lead isn’t really lead, but sort of is, if that makes sense. That’s Scott. They don’t technically call him lead, but he sings lead often and is the extrovert who does most of the talking on stage (though they all do talk on stage sometimes). The beatboxer is Kevin, and he also sings and occasionally plays cello on a song. You’re absolutely correct that they are phenomenal live. Their catalog includes covers, evolutions, mashups, medleys , incredible originals, collaborations, and several Christmas albums. They also all have breakout solo projects.

Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of acapella. Pentatonix is the group that really brought acapella to the mainstream. Love them to this day and have seen them live multiple times now. Few more groups you may want to check out if you enjoy this style of music. Home Free is a country acapella band that also won the Sing Off (few years later) and VoicePlay is another brilliant band that tends to be a bit more similar to Pentatonix in style. Thanks for this, Nick!

Yes, more Pentatonix please!!!! They are the acapella group. They are the reason acapella is back. They just received a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame this year and they have 3 Grammys. Pentaholics don't care how many times you stop it. Subbed for more Pentatonix. I would recommend their Daft Punk Medley (won them their 1st Grammy and their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody next. The girl, Kirstie and the guy that was wearing the mullet, Mitch change their looks a lot, so do not be confused when you see different videos. It is still the same members. The only member change over the years was the bass singer.

I’m not trying to take away from the band, they’re phenomenal and have the accolades to prove it, but a star on the Walk of Fame isn’t quite that hard to come by. Anyone can pretty much nominate and then a selection committee decides on 30 out of the 200-300 applications. Then someone has to pay 75,000 and I think that includes the person being nominated and then BAM! You have a star.

@@hernameispekka_Rebecca They could nominate themselves if they wanted to. We have no idea who the nominating committee is or what criteria they base their rulings on. Trump has a star. Here's a little info: Left to right, Matt sings bass. He does the sounds like a bass guitar. Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty) is the girl and has amazing range. Scott sings baritone and also covers the bass when Matt sings a verse. Mitch is the tenor and also has amazing range. Kevin is the beatboxer in most songs, but also has a beautiful tenor voice and he plays the cello. He can play the cello while also beatboxing! Matt joined the group in 2017 when the original bass singer, Avi, left. So if you watch other videos, don't be surprised by that. Mitch and Kirsty change their appearances a lot. Kirsty, Scott, and Mitch have been singing together since high school. They added Avi and Kevin when they decided to do the acapella singing competition show, The Sing Off in 2011. You can watch their live performances too. They sound just as good live as in their studio recordings.

Usually the best way to avoid copyright claims Is frequent pausing. But if you pause remember to rewind a few seconds to not lose the feel of the music. Some people use a watermark or transparency over the video to avoid copyright.
There are some artists, usually independent, that you can actually reach out to them and they will help you remove copyright strikes. But when it comes to major labels you just have to find a workaround

  • @HKBr1nghurst
    @HKBr1nghurst 11 месяцев назад +6

8:30 (ish) I think the balance and timing of pauses for commentary were great. I mean, you kind of have to do it to avoid copyright issues, and I think you got it just right. Just a tiny tweak that might be helpful for both you and us, that I've seen others do, is when you do pause to comment, you might rewind a hair from the point you paused at when you restart. Just a bar or two. Fantastic reaction to a fantastic song, though! I love your movie and TV reactions, no surprise I love this too!

Pentatonix is THE a cappella band to listen to. They're the only a cappella band with a Grammy, except they have 3. They're also the only a cappella band with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
    The members of Pentatonix:
    In this video we have:
    • First soloist: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's range begins somewhere in the middle of a normal bass range and extends upward through most of a normal tenor range. He is known for his riffs and runs. When their bass has a solo Scott can and does take over the bass line in the accompaniment.
    • Second soloist: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves but prefers the higher part of that range - in this song he was singing a bit lower than he likes, though still well within his range. He's known for his ethereal high solos; I recommend their cover of "The Prayer" to really hear the angelic quality of his voice.
    • Third soloist: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable) lyric bass. This video was made four years ago, and Matt's range has grown considerably since. To hear the full extent of his range I recommend listening to a recent performance of "Hallelujah," where the bass sings the second verse. Matt's arrangement seems to be designed to show off the full extent of his range, and it blows me away. He isn't quite down to basso profundo yet (though I expect he will be within a year or two) but his highest note is near the top of a normal tenor range! Before you react to that, though, you should react to their official video for "Hallelujah." That will introduce you to Pentatonix's first bass, Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, who left the band for personal reasons in 2017 and was replaced by Matt later that year. (More about Avi later.) Once you've done that you can find a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour here: ruclips.net/video/ASYzLoi810k/видео.html
    • Fourth soloist: Kirstin (also known as Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto soprano and the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstie sings everything from a low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. When asked whether she can sing higher than Mitch or vice versa no one is quite certain; I suspect that it varies from one day to the next. Everyone agrees, however, that Kirstie has the best whistle notes. To hear a song where Kirstie shows off her high notes I recommend "Seasons of Love," preferably from their live Fourth of July performance.
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth), beatboxer extraordinaire. Kevin has perfect pitch and has been classically trained since childhood on cello, saxophone, and piano. When he was a teenager he performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on the saxophone and once on the cello. He's known for beatboxing while playing the cello, which he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a premed degree from Yale and had already been accepted to Yale Medical School when he was asked to join Pentatonix (when the band was just beginning, in 2011); he had to give up his dream of becoming a brilliant surgeon to become a professional musician instead. He speaks five languages fluently: English, Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the upper end of the baritone range. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs the whole planet seems like a brighter place.
    • Not in this video: Avi Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo, but his range extends upward to about midway through a normal tenor range. As previously mentioned he left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons, but he has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his RUclips channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
