Oh, so I agree they wanted it to be a retreat, and in the narrative, it clearly is and that is because in 3.0, they will likely separate Normal Move from Retreat as a truly separate choice. They could certainly answer as much in an FAQ (though that will likely come out 1 week before 3.0, so I am not sure they will). The issue right now is a retreat is just a Normal move that you make when you leave engagement range, it's just something that happens when that move triggers and that is what they are doing. By the RAW, it's a retreat and they can't charge. I agree that isn't how it's described, and that is likely because in less than a month, it won't be a retreat anymore when the rules change. :)

I'm very much hoping 3rd edition will allow for the buying of individual models in units, rather than increments of 5, 10, etc. (Which would allow me to actually use the twenty FOUR Chaos Warriors or Saurus I have. It would also mean I'm not forced to take endless spells I don't want.) Or maybe finally a double caster grand necromancer)
@@VinceVenturella yep, was really hoping they'd be a mini, super elite strike team of vampires.... Might make good demons for a certain new game though.... 😉
Has anyone done an unofficial points breakout for the Cursed city stuff? Vince, would you take a stab at it? I'm very much a casual gamer, and I'd like to use the cursed city stuff for AOS.
I like the theme of Luka losing control as the battle goes on but the trade off for not being able to give command abilities should be huge. Like she should rip and tear for that trade off.
I suspect it wouldn't. Even though the nature of the unbind is different (5+ roll vs normal method), it's still an attempt to unbind. With artefacts like Quickduff Amulet, or abilities like Teclis' auto-cast, they can't be unbound in the first place. It's a great Q, though, and probably a good one for the SBG FAQ.
Yeah, I agree with Tyler, it's dependent on the ability. If it says it can't be unbound, I am guessing no, if it's an autocaust that for some reason doesn't that prohibition, it would work I think. BUt yeah, FAQ
So I know people are bummed about what they consider a nerf to skeleton warriors but.... doesnt it give them and Grave Guard a proper role in the force now? Like kinda silly that old Skeletons were these disgusting frenzied bajillion attack hordes... and Grave Guard were kind of just like cool, I guess we will take a nap. So now having Skeleton being the undying returning legions of the old bone piles, and Grave Guard being your heavy armored damage dealing of bone packs just feels that much better.
Also:Vyrkos just seems so disjointed because they get spell caster buffs but the majority of their named characters AREN'T even wizards. Makes it a legitimate opportunity cost to taking Kritza/Annika/etc. because they don't benefit from 1/2 of the sub-allegiance abilities. And let's not even get into the non-bo of necromancers, arguably your most powerful mini-casters, not getting benefits of either ability.
I love that the book gives a bunch of cool stuff to vampire casters and then made the entire lore so garbage... “hey, if you cast a vampire lore spell on a 9+ you get TWO casts! BUUUuUT... there is only one decent spell and it exclusively restricts this rule...”
With Vrykos, you can run Chadukar the Beast and Baller-damma and summon up to 18 Direwolves in a turn. Not resurrect, summon. Shame the models are so spense, guess I'll buy Chaos Warhounds
I am disappointed enough in the army that I decided not to buy in. I wanted it to be an army with cool Vampires as the focus, or, at least, where they were an option. I can run the Blood Knights out of Kastelai but that means I have 1 unit then heroes. The melange of named heroes are all ipsem lorem for me. I want to play *my army* not Radukar's. I could see an argument for a Neferata army where you just swap skeleton models for suitably painted Cities of Sigmar models to have a Queen of the Night vampire court ruling over their living subjects with an elite Vampire nobility forming the shock elements.
It's weird that it's supposed to be 'the vampire army' yet the core allegiance abilities are so focused on minions and they clearly made the vampire spell lore worse than it was previously. Definitely shows how for all of the modular elements they're really pushing the linear "you'll be punished for not taking hordes (of zombies), a named mortarch/caster, and a VLZoD."
@@VinceVenturella Yeah! That's very probably true :p I mean, did you upload similar videos for your other armies too? Also, congrats for your channel, it is just so awesome!
I really like your Design Graph final slide. I'm curious why the sweet spot as you call it is in the middle of the x and high on the y axis and not high on both the x and y axis. Thereby, the books in the new "sweet spot" would have both high quality design and high competitive power, like where you've placed DoK, Seraphon, and Tzeentch. Is high quality design and high competitive power not the most desirable?
So we don't want things at the top of the competitive spectrum, we want books to be middling power (of course, it's all relative, technically, if the scale isn't objective, it could expand as you increase balance). The goal isn't to have high power, I consider most of those books a failure for being outside of the acceptable power curve. So that's why the sweet spot is the middle. You want the fat middle, books of 45-55% win rate, middling power and very high design.
Man, Ninjon is SO salty in this :) Just because it nerfed the things he liked from LoN? SBGL is a decently strong army with multiple competitive builds. I also think all of the dynasties are potentially competitive.
If it's, say, a unit of 10 Sentinels in a common 2x5 layout, you'd place those couple of wolves on the L- or R-side of the Sentinels, just at the 3" mark. So at most a couple Sentinels will pile in and attack, probably with 1 attack each on 3's and 4's. It's possible, though, that your opponent sets up in such a way that it becomes difficult to avoid placing those wolves within 3" of another unit with more reach and/or combat punch, like Wardens. :)
@@TylerEmerson The opponent decides which models are slain, and the wolves have to be setup where the slain models were, though. In a 2x5 setup the sentinal player could very well choose to kill some from the middle to be able to deal with the wolves. But yeah, archers are usually not very great at melee, i guess.
If Kragnos is too far north of 500 he sadly will never see play in my BCR. At 600+ I would just take 2 stonehorns. Maybe a weird spot in my bonesplitterz archer Horde but idk.
I will see GW drowned in my tears for what they did to Negash. They ruined a perfectly, good, Supreme Lord of Undeath. But putting that aside (temporarily), I do like the new vamps. The merchandise is great. I’m a fan of the whole line. I like the lore in general, too. I can’t speak to the competitiveness of the army but they have to be more competitive than Negash, who can never win at anything, ever. I hope the Grave Lords are fun to play, although narratively, I expect they will be just as incompetent as their Grand Alliance leader has proven himself to be. You guys, however, are not incompetent. Good episode, thanks for the breakdown. 👍
I think Blood knights will be Retreat & Charge, it states beeing able to do a normal move like others somehow can't. The fluff says they charge forward basically through enemy not actully flying (so not a retreat..) AND The community post about them prior to release mentioned you'd attack things behind the enemy screens imgur.com/a/82nOZap
Couldn't agree more about the melee foot heroes not being worth it. I can see them making it into a 1k list maybe, but they just aren't worth it in 2k when you can get so much more for another 60 pts in most factions.
Hey fantastic show! Thank you, Does any one know the interaction between the grave guard and the beast hero spell for 2 hits on a 6? Does it give 2 MWs?
Reading the Lauka Vai novel atm and she should have bonus to casting rolls. She can literally mentally influence her brood over large distances and can kill mortals just by looking at them with her mind. Also she seems to have a superb control over her curse compared to her lesser kin
Tom needs to get his camera fixed, he’s looking a bit different. You had Ninjon and PowerPoint, so it’s a like from me. My only gripe is the lack of doggo but we did get a cat so 👍
Whats the source for John's claim that the new model must be within 1 inch of the existing unit?? Gotta show it to my mate so he can't string shit back it's bloody annoying
Personally they seemed like huge missed opportunities, especially The Crimson Court; but that's been common with warbands, unfortunately. They either don't serve much of any purpose, or they're overcosted, or both.
@@Sev159 Yeah they might make some lists at 150, although that's still tough IMO, since their main synergy, Prince Duvalle's spell, only has a 6" range, and the vampire spell lore is pretty underwhelming. But yeah I could see folks buying at 150.
@@TylerEmerson Yes the low range on the spell is quite annoying. I also don't quite get why they give the other 3 Court units the "The Hunger" ability when 2 of them only have 1 wound without a way to bring them back after they die.
lol was waiting for your thoughts of the points values ending in 5. I think its just a writer that has a hard on for arbitrary points values, like slaanesh so many 150pts, why 150? don't know but thats what it is.
I feel like I am the only one who hates the new skeletons, Waay overcosted for bad damage, Bad defense and a special rule that may never come into play, 170 for 20, For an extra 25 you can get blood knights, For 55 less you get zombies, I just don't get what these guys are for, Why take these over anyother unit?
One consideration is their minimum price differential with Zombies: 85 for 10 vs 115 for 20. Haven't spent much time building Soulblight lists yet, but some lists may benefit from a couple extra cheap units of chaff for screening, zoning, objective sitting, etc., as complements to their bigger units, such as units of 40 Zombies or 30 Grave Guard. In that regard, 10 Skellies at 85 would be one of your better options for a cheap screen -- with sufficient frontal coverage -- for those Zombies or Grave Guard.
Kragnos estimate for me: armour save values are massively overappreciated by GW and I'm guessing around or even over 800 partly because of that. Also, with Nagash going to 975 and overall points hikes and/or removal of horde bonusses, I'm thinking we'll see a points cost increase across the board.
Vince thought it was so bad he left it off the slide. :) I think it might be the most underwhelming scroll in the book. Thankfully there’s a bunch of great scrolls.
@@VinceVenturella well, thank you for your answer! My opinion is that it can have great synergies with vampire units. On a Blood Knights Kastelai build, projecting the palanquin inside enemy lines along with Blood Knights can be devastating. Also having the Palanquin as Legion of Night general, ambushing the enemy along with 2x3 Vargheists seems pretty good to me. I agree that by itself it is annoying. But in a Vampire specific build, it is to consider. What do you think?
If Tyler's gonna be the new co-host he really needs to invest in a decent mic. Really makes the show a lot worse when one person has awful audio quality.
Can confirm that the addition of Tyler > Mic not being top notch But a bit of a non issue from my perspective tbh but sure a nice to have upgrade maybe in future
Not garbage, there is some play here, they are very middle, which in the end, I think is a good thing. :) - Though there are clearly opportunities for improvement in the book.
There are *just* enough things missing from the new Soulblight Gravelords book to make me think they're getting the Lumineth treatment. Watch this space in 6 months time for vampire infantry, a terrain piece, and some endless spells.
Yeah it does feel that way a bit...the lack of a new dragon kit/centerpiece -- like a dual kit for a new Vhordrai and new Vampire Lord on dragon -- was a real letdown.
Good show - very side point but I suspect the 5pts increments is to promote the use of the new (more expensive) app for list building.... or am I just being cynical?? Really cynical is wondering whether it will be tied to warhammer plus along with preordering, and so explaining stock levels of new releases further... but I am probably just too cynical...
I get Ninjons point about heroes like Lady Annika but... there’$ a rea$on that melee blender foot-soldiers don’t exist. Spoiler alert: it’s the same reason Teclis now has a pointless ugly Sphinx thing on his base.
I think you're underselling the wight king as a general. Grave guard as battleline opens up a lot of options for listbuilding I think. Black knights are pretty flexible chaff, and it opens up that option outside of legion of blood since you'll have less battleline to fill. Black knights chaffing early, can put pressure on back side board objectives and even the 2-3 that come back still have the same impact hits. Also I think this is a mid tier book, which will have an average winrate, because of its popularity, but has the tools to do really well and will show up in top tables pretty consistently.
Hey David, love that summary re: mid-range win rate impacted by popularity while also having viability on top tables. Was getting a similar vibe off the book. We'll see.... If SBG can get a decent amount of CP in 3.0, that'll help too.
I'm so glad that Belladamma Volga is great. She's EASILY my favorite model in SBG, and one of the best models in all of AoS to me from a visual standpoint. And I love all of her rules as well. They did a great job with her all around. /SkeletonFlower with a confusing new name
Also, I've seen more negativity in the FB-group for this army in the last two weeks than I've done in total for 40k after coming back to the game almost a year ago. That is actually kinda nuts. It almost made me not want to give the game another shot, because it felt so incredibly off-putting. So I'm glad you have a bunch of people with different opinions and ideas, so you can actually offer a balanced look at this book.
@@SkeletonFlower Hey SkeletonFlower! Yeah Radukar the Beast and her are just home runs. Hoping 3.0 opens up the book even more, especially on the command point front. Just so many good command abilities available, but far too few CP currently.
@@VinceVenturella I think it's a shame. I get that the book isn't perfect, even to a new player like me. There's a few misses here and there, but overall I'm very excited to get into 3.0 with this army.

Might make good demons for a certain new game though.... 😉
Has anyone done an unofficial points breakout for the Cursed city stuff? Vince, would you take a stab at it? I'm very much a casual gamer, and I'd like to use the cursed city stuff for AOS.
I haven't seen anyone take a shot at it. I am actually hoping they might just do it themselves in 3.0.
I like the theme of Luka losing control as the battle goes on but the trade off for not being able to give command abilities should be huge. Like she should rip and tear for that trade off.
Totally agree.
1:30:05 Does that work on abilities that let you auto-cast without rolling? Like the Bloodtoofs Artefact?
You're not wrong there. :)
if they reduce all the giants by 5 points and Kragnos is like 530 he can fit in the Sons army lol
And would somehow count as one model
@@40KWill lol so true
So guaranteed then he's at least 540. ;)
Interested in what the FAQ says about grandma's "Under the Killing Moon" + Chadukar's "Unleashed ferocity." Potential "Smash Chad" build inbound?
Also:Vyrkos just seems so disjointed because they get spell caster buffs but the majority of their named characters AREN'T even wizards. Makes it a legitimate opportunity cost to taking Kritza/Annika/etc. because they don't benefit from 1/2 of the sub-allegiance abilities. And let's not even get into the non-bo of necromancers, arguably your most powerful mini-casters, not getting
benefits of either ability.
Smash Chad, I love this. And yes, the Vyrkos spellcasting is weird.
I love that the book gives a bunch of cool stuff to vampire casters and then made the entire lore so garbage... “hey, if you cast a vampire lore spell on a 9+ you get TWO casts! BUUUuUT... there is only one decent spell and it exclusively restricts this rule...”
It's...strange.
With Vrykos, you can run Chadukar the Beast and Baller-damma and summon up to 18 Direwolves in a turn. Not resurrect, summon. Shame the models are so spense, guess I'll buy Chaos Warhounds
That is something nice, there is no shortage of wolf models on the market.
Why didn't the corpse cart get a new model?..
Oh, because they looked at the brilliance that was the existing model and couldn't figure out how to improve on perfection. ;)
Fell Bats = the kits people will use for vargeists and varghoul conversions
Yep, nailed it.
This book seems weaker than the old Legions of Nagash... And that book was not killing it...
I think overall it will come up more powerful, but it will be very different.
Ah man this was a bummer. The only models in the entire book I don't like are the zombies and the corpse cart.
Well, there is other quality in here as well. :)
I was really hopeing for the all vampires as well, but Warhammer gonna warhammer.
Hey Vince! I am just curious about your armies. Do you usually upload the painting process of the whole army?
It's a shortened video with a mix of time lapse, video examples and so on. I don't think a 24 hour video would have many people watching. :)
@@VinceVenturella Yeah! That's very probably true :p I mean, did you upload similar videos for your other armies too? Also, congrats for your channel, it is just so awesome!
They could get rid of the cygors easy lol. All they would have to do is make the Warscroll good
Seems easy to me.
Also I can not think of him as anything other than CHADakur the beast now
I mean that's his name right? ;)
@@VinceVenturella it just fits so well
I really like your Design Graph final slide.
Great run down and very balanced I suspect. Question; if you bring back half of a 5 model unit, is it 2 or 3 models that come back?
THey mention rounding up, so 3.
@@VinceVenturella thanks.
Vince, how about little dragons, but instead of riding, the SCE are hanging from them like Hang Gliders meet Balloon Boys?
I mean, I don't hate it.
There's so many similarities between this book and S2D... The marauders lift up S2D like the Zombies lift SBGL.
You're not wrong.
Interesting stuff! Lots of once per battle effects, is that a new direction for AoS? I don't remember any in my Cities book
It's been around more and more lately.
Man, Ninjon is SO salty in this :) Just because it nerfed the things he liked from LoN? SBGL is a decently strong army with multiple competitive builds. I also think all of the dynasties are potentially competitive.
He's come around since then. :)
Won't the sentinels not just kill a couple of wolves from Lycancurse in the SBGL players combat phase?
If it's, say, a unit of 10 Sentinels in a common 2x5 layout, you'd place those couple of wolves on the L- or R-side of the Sentinels, just at the 3" mark. So at most a couple Sentinels will pile in and attack, probably with 1 attack each on 3's and 4's.
It's possible, though, that your opponent sets up in such a way that it becomes difficult to avoid placing those wolves within 3" of another unit with more reach and/or combat punch, like Wardens. :)
THey are pretty weak in melee and keep in mind, only a few of them will be able to fight, so it's quite likely they will leave.
@@Lodorn The warscroll states that the dire wolves are set up within 3” of the slain model’s unit, so it still works.
@@joshuaalt9448 Ah, I think I confused the wording with the new restrictions to returned models.
You are correct.
If Kragnos is too far north of 500 he sadly will never see play in my BCR. At 600+ I would just take 2 stonehorns.
Maybe a weird spot in my bonesplitterz archer Horde but idk.
I would tend to agree.
I see Tom took a break from talking about not pirate vampires.
Yep, when he idn't get the Vampirates, he was out! ;)
We had to get rid of Nagash to clear the way for the real characters, the vamps. ;)
I think Blood knights will be Retreat & Charge, it states beeing able to do a normal move like others somehow can't.
The fluff says they charge forward basically through enemy not actully flying (so not a retreat..)
AND
The community post about them prior to release mentioned you'd attack things behind the enemy screens
imgur.com/a/82nOZap
Oh, I agree, they will get the update (or rather the rules will update around them).
So the plus one minus one restriction is probably gonna mirror 40k, which only limits to hit and to wound rolls
Good note.
@@VinceVenturella thanks! Congrats on the game release!
Couldn't agree more about the melee foot heroes not being worth it. I can see them making it into a 1k list maybe, but they just aren't worth it in 2k when you can get so much more for another 60 pts in most factions.
Yeah, they are basically there to buff and that's abotu it.
I don't know what to believe is true anymore! Maybe the Earth really is flat...
It's a cube. ;)
Hey fantastic show! Thank you, Does any one know the interaction between the grave guard and the beast hero spell for 2 hits on a 6? Does it give 2 MWs?
Nope, it will just trigger both. So you will get a bonus normal hit and the MW, so it's basically just they both happen, independently.
@@VinceVenturella ah ok thank you very much. I'm guessing it works the same way for zombies too then. Really appreciate the answer and the content!
Reading the Lauka Vai novel atm and she should have bonus to casting rolls. She can literally mentally influence her brood over large distances and can kill mortals just by looking at them with her mind. Also she seems to have a superb control over her curse compared to her lesser kin
That all sounds awesome and not on the scroll.
Let me be clear! Tom is always the first choice!
100% :)
I suppose. :)
Full squads would be nice for new starter set
Yep
Ok, what sort of rumor engine photo would you actually find interesting? I feel that GW is batting .000 on this for you.
Oh, I am not even sure in this case, I think part of it is because I know the box was coming so quickly, so who cares. :)
37:40 Add the carnivorous death world 40K terrain for Ghur :-p
Nailed it.
Tom needs to get his camera fixed, he’s looking a bit different. You had Ninjon and PowerPoint, so it’s a like from me. My only gripe is the lack of doggo but we did get a cat so 👍
All fair. ;)
Whats the source for John's claim that the new model must be within 1 inch of the existing unit?? Gotta show it to my mate so he can't string shit back it's bloody annoying
I wasn't sure either, I couldn't find the FAQ
@@VinceVenturella I found it, turns out it's in the actual book lol
What happened to Tom? He gone for good?
Nope, just taking a few weeks off. :)
What is your opinion about the crimson court and sepulchral guard units?
Personally they seemed like huge missed opportunities, especially The Crimson Court; but that's been common with warbands, unfortunately. They either don't serve much of any purpose, or they're overcosted, or both.
They make great proxies!
Thank you for answering! So my guess is that the Crimson Court is like 50 Points too expensive?
Yep, it screams arbitrary.
I miss Tom
He'll be back soon. :)
Oh no, you are far from alone.
Man Ninjon is being such a negative nelly in this episode, he's usually very positive... someone is feeling grump grumps.
I think he was just trying to give the true feeling. Ironically, he's come around and is more positive since then.
2:45:00 Belladomma for 200 points is insane. She’s been quite the topic in Nighthaunt discords as a comparison to what we want Lady Olynder to become.
She's strong. :)
I hate the new book. They seem to want you to run hordes but then they make all the horde units mediocre and the auras far too small.
Well, I mean hordes of Zombies are good at least. :)
@@VinceVenturella goodish haha.
Love you Vince.
Is Tyler replacing Rich Evans?
Turns out Tom was Defeatable.
Agreed completely. :)
@@VinceVenturella looks I was pretty much spot on with my slightly pessimistic estimate.
Excuse me, i already asked in the chat during the live with no answer but.... where is the Bloodseeker Palanquin??
Vince thought it was so bad he left it off the slide. :) I think it might be the most underwhelming scroll in the book. Thankfully there’s a bunch of great scrolls.
@@TylerEmerson ok. I strongly disagree, but ok.
@@maximebemer3407 Yeah it's all good. Would love to hear a different view. What all do you like about the Palanquin? Maybe we missed something.
Yeah, I thought it was just terrible, but I am open to change my opinion as ever. :)
Sisqo is a cruelboy
that checks out

>> sbgL
SBG, I will die on this hill. :)
If Tyler's gonna be the new co-host he really needs to invest in a decent mic. Really makes the show a lot worse when one person has awful audio quality.
Sorry the audio sounded poor for you. I’ll try a mic next time and see if that helps.
We'll continue to play with it.
Can confirm that the addition of Tyler > Mic not being top notch
But a bit of a non issue from my perspective tbh but sure a nice to have upgrade maybe in future
It's nice not hearing someone say "I mean..." before everything he says.
It's a change of pace.
What's the verdict how garbage are they
Not garbage, there is some play here, they are very middle, which in the end, I think is a good thing.
I'm sticking to my guns it will be more than a year before we get a part 2.
Ha! The new center-piece giant vampire centaurs just get shoulder checked to death by Kragnos immediately :D
Hope he rolls that 7!
I hadn't thought about that angle, jeez I hope not.
I get Ninjons point about heroes like Lady Annika but... there’$ a rea$on that melee blender foot-soldiers don’t exist.
Spoiler alert: it’s the same reason Teclis now has a pointless ugly Sphinx thing on his base.
Yeah, but I also get his want, I mean it sounds cool. :)
At under 600 points this guy will own the 1000 point meta :-p
You're not wrong there.
Awesome video Vince thanks heaps. Some really good takes, has improved my mood a bit on the book
Excellent. :)
Moulder and Eshin need some love in 3.0
100% yes.
I agree with your summation completely, I'll give the Wight King another look. :)
Yeah, I really think she's amazing and it's surprising that there has been the negativity, but the positive outweighs the negative by far.
@@VinceVenturella I think it's a shame. I get that the book isn't perfect, even to a new player like me. But this isn't like Beasts of Chaos in Fantasy or 8th ed Tomb Kings where the book has like one build that's barely even average. There's a few misses here and there, but overall I'm very excited to get into 3.0 with this army.
Great episode. Love Jon as guest and Tyler for new cohost. Great choice!! TY
Thank you, Tyler and I are excited to carry the torch while Tom is away. :)
