The chorus really speaks to me very deep, I grow up since 3 years old to 15, in a catholic school, when my sexuality starts to emerge, I literally cry myself to bed almost every night praying to god to not make me gay, to not make me feel the way i felt about boys, it was really hard for maaany years
This sounds like the type of songs my dad played for me when I was a little kid, in the early 2000s. Loving the europop/eurodance sound. Absolutely gorgeous song, and the lyrics hit.
"I took your stones and I built a cathedral" is one of the most beautiful, poetic lyrics I've ever heard. This song really cuts me deep and I love it so much.
One of my favorite songs on the album, along with Hold the Girl, This Hell, and Phantom. I know what Rina is talking about (religious authorities controlling female sexuality), but the lyrics have such a strong personal connection to me as a survivor of conversion therapy. The whole song is a celebration of finding self-empowerment/acceptance and realizing how much self-hate you internalized from authority figures. And the dark vibes are immaculate... *chef's kiss*
this is such a beautiful song and it's still a banger. queen rina healing us thru her music "i was innocent when you said i was evil" "found my peace when i lost my religion" "all these years i wished i was different" I MEAN COME ONNNNNN
Also the production absolutely astounds me. The chorus sounds so full of light, so it makes the line "you saw a light, starting to shine" hit so much harder, the chorus literally sounds like that light is bursting forth after struggling to come free. Instrumental belongs in a magical girl transformation sequence, 12/10

I think this would be a great Eurovision entry. Granted it's a bit daring and outlandish but musically it's fantastic and think it could be a potential winner.

This describes my childhood a bright, curious boy, avid reader, naive, innocent, and filled with a light that shined differently than my friends and family. I attended a private Christian School until 8th grade where I was constantly bullied and called a “f” word before even knowing what gay was. My parents are conservative Christians and we attended a church multiple times a week, a church that preached that homosexuality was a sin. My dad likened gay to pedophiles. I had tried to “pray” the gay away, and I invalidated my own identity and hid behind religion as a way to pass as straight in high school. It wasn’t until I was 17, just like this song, that I started to question everything I believed in, everything I had been indoctrinated with for 17 years. Once I could drive and had more freedom, I stopped going to church, and I came out to my parents whom did not approve. I realize now that I was holy to them until they let me have some independence and the ability to make up my own mind as to what it was that I truly believed in. I suffered for years due to the invalidating environment I was raised in, but I didn’t let it define me. I have been working with a therapist on healing the childhood trauma I experienced as a result of my parents’ ignorance and lack of awareness of what they were saying and doing to destroy my identity. I was innocent when they said I was evil. I took their stones and built a cathedral. Now I know I’m holy til you let me go. Thank you for this song, Rina. It has affected me in such a profound way.

Just like you told me (but something had changed)
Came to shelter from the blame
But I left taking all the shame
Oh, you saw a light starting to shine
Wanted it only for your eyes
Older and wise, God on your side
(I was the martyr who paid for your life)
I was innocent when you said I was evil
