I have a full Olympus setup. Two cameras and 7 lenses. The 45 f/1.8 is my favorite go to lens. Inexpensive, excellent quality giving tack sharp images. What more can you ask for in a lens. Well done review, but may I add a bit of advice? Try not to sit so close to the camera. I feel like you are right in my face 😊. Just a little constructive criticism. That’s all. But, a good job reviewing that lens. 👍
Hi Gary, nice review BUT, I will never use those Lumix lenses if I can get M.Zuiko Prime or Pro lenses! There is a big difference of quality between the 2. I will get instead SIGMA lenses, almost so great than the M.Zuiko Pro lenses. Apart of that, great narration, great presentation...thanks a lot for the work you do for all of us. It's a good lens - I used to own this but I sold it for the Panasonic 42.5mm, I know there isn't much between the two lenses but I really do prefer the results from the Panasonic 42.5mm, it seems sharper and the colours look nicer.
Agree on sharpness and color. I traded my Panasonic 42.5mm for the Oly 45mm and I am regretting it. Also the olympus minimal focus distance is 50cm and it is too much for my usage (I am doing more portraits of flowers and leaves than people). For the same reason I don't want the 42.5mm f1.2. I intend to get a 42.5mm again. Waiting for a second hand one
The 35-100 F2.8 is excellent, I own the Oly 45mm it’s a nice lens but the AF isn’t the best on my GH5. I’m a new dad and if my little girl moves at all the Oly loses focus. Another prime that’s very underrated is the Lumix 30mm F2.8 Macro, a great travel lens good for street, portrait and obviously macro. Match this lens with a GF9 and you’ve a powerful little travel setup
Thanks for the long-term review. Love the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 as a half-length and head & shoulder portrait lens. Have never used it for product shots. Instead, I use an adapted 55mm f/3.5 micro Nikkor.
For still photography, as long as you don't mind adjusting the shutter speed to compensate for the lack of IBIS, it doesn't really bother me. However, for video, the lack of IBIS really limits the ability to use the camera handheld, you'd simply have to use video tripods or gimbals or other similar devices.
@@Gary_W Is there a rule of thumb of how much faster the shutter speed has to be when shooting with a no-IBIS, no-OIS setup, compared to an IBIS/OIS setup?
Unfortunately I don't own a camera without IBIS, but I don't think the performance of the lens has anything to do with IBIS. The lens should still perform well with non IBIS body 😁
The lens is perfect in every way and does not require a review. If you own an Olympus, get the lens. Don't waste your money on a 12-40mm 2.8 [I have the 12-40 for my E-M1]or any other lens. Don't waste your money on the PRO lens.
One of the best for the format, but it's even tighter than the 45mm. I think that's because the 56mm was designed for APS-C first, just look at the focal length.
@@paceyombex 100% agree. All sigma lenses were designed for aps-c. Mft was an afterthought. I have the 30mm f1.4 and it works with the EM1 body. It looks larger but due to the plastic body these lenses are lightweight
How are you getting close focus flower photos? That’s the one thing I HATE about this lens is that the close focusing is too far away. I’d use it a lot more if it focused closer. In fact I should just sell it.
For flower photography, I don't need to be that close in my experience. However, the one thing that I struggle with close focusing is mostly product photography.

The Panasonic 42.5mm seems to be superior compared to the Olympus 45mm. I will check it out in the future!

Hey, Gary. How worse is it the lack of OIS in Olympus 45mm compared to Panasonic 42.5mm with OIS for a Panasonic body without IBIS?

What do you think about the sigma 56mm f1.4 for portrait...?
Sigma is good but the working distance of this 45 is really great.
I haven't tried the Sigma, but I heard some copies are a bit soft wide open at f1.4

@@bkaustav Yup, Sigma trio could work for the Mft, but the focal length would be weird. Optically they're great tho, especially for the price.
