Vergil is overpowered with speec and strength, Dante is mostly more tricky than he is strong or fast which is why as a boss he's more annoying than fighting Vergil.
You can only do that when at SSS Rank. When you do that, you also have a couple of seconds before the SDT starts to deplete where you can exit out of it as well. Also another Dante trick I didn't know for quite a long time that I now use regularly: after at least a handful of Devil Sword Dante attacks (don't use the other swords), you have a very short window of time where you can use overdrive without triggering it's ramp up (see 8:36). Kind of how you can use Judgement Cut with Vergil when the sword flashes, just that you don't have a visual indicator and have to use different inputs.
