Thank you for making this tutorial and thank you kobushi for making NKEPL. Although I am a native Japanese speaker, I was struggling to set up these emulators because most of the resources are very old and too technical for me. I was able to run Yu-no and creamy mami successfully. I'm now trying to run CD games like Policenauts.
Hey Brad, Good job on this! I am more of an advanced user so I had already made a more or less functional PC98 setup but this is still VERY nice to follow. I didn't realize how outdated my emulators were till I watched this. :) One of the biggest reasons people emulate the PC98 is for Touhou 1-5. They also do not work properly through the setup you have used here and need to special TLC to get them going. Maybe you guys could make a video dedicated to Touhou. Even getting the Windows games 6-15 to work is an absolute PAIN. I think that would be a great topic for another tut. Thanks for the work, GJ!
Actually, for set up I was reading a Touhou tutorial, and the Neko Project II version I was using (the 3 alternatives) are used in some cases. I did notice that right away though during research, Touhou is a PITA and there seems to be different solutions for every single game.
I created a bat file that overwrites the ini file and launches the emulator so that I can play hdi files. I made one for every game and set Launchbox to launch the bat files. Kinda tricky, but it works.
Great video! Biggest problem for me was that the pre-configured window size was too large for my screen, and I couldn't click the little cat icon that would allow me to change it. I had to temporarily use a second monitor to expand my vertical resolution so I'd have more room to maneuver.
I don't know about NEC emulators, but I can recommend a couple MSX emulators, one is blueMSX, the other is fMSX, you can use both MSX DOS and MSX Basic with both emulators.
Could you please make an updated tutorial on this using Retroarch, as well as an updated tutorial for the PC-8801 as the emulator is outdated and not recommended anymore?
I HAVE A PROBLEM I’m trying to play evo the theory of evolution, also known as 46 okunen monogatari and I came to the site from their own special link. Now, I also have gzdoom on my computer, so whenever I download from that link, it doesn’t show up as a zip file, and I can only open it with gzdoom! I don’t know what to do, so please help!
Brad, Thank you good sir for tackling this project. These are the systems I was working on setting up right now, so this saves me some time and prob frustration. Cheers.
anyone know how to swap the disks like he was talking about at 10:44?? im trying to play chicks tale but after the 3 rounds, it tells me to swap disks and i have no idea how to do that :(
I know I am too late, but to insert a new disk go to FDD2 to insert disk 2, select the disk and then press enter. To insert disk 3 you have to go to FDD1 and select disk 3, for disk 4 you go to FDD2 and so on. Hope this helps.
Depends on the game. For example, at 27:00 his game says, "Please insert Game Disk C into Disk Drive A." So, at that point he should click FDD1 (Floppy Disk Drive 1 = 'Disk Drive A'), Open..., and then select the third Dragon Province disk image.
I have an issue where whenever I click on a game it launches the same game. I have three games and whichever I click launches only the first game I playe din launch box.
Hey is there any other way to find file coverter? The VFIC link on that site does not work anymore it just take me to weird redirect sites that have nothing to do with what the link was meant for so I dunno what happened to it but it is not a file converter anymore. The game in particular I want to run is set in FDD format and the emulator does not seem to support that at all.
For some reason hollding END key while reseting to get to the BIOS settings does not work for me. Does someone know why and could help me? Pretty Please
D88s not working for me. I haven't tried any other file types. When I load the "disks" in and reset I again get: CPU Mode HIGH Memory 640KB OK + 1024KB OK Then those disappear and I get a black screen
Hi, the emulator runs most games perfectly for me, but when I load some games it says "no system files" . Any idea what I could do? Thanks in advance :)
Hi Mamsih from france I have build my own bartop cabinat , and i have install the launch Box with bigbox premium , mais i wanna add big box in windows startup like hyperspIn and still focus wihout using mous or keyboard .. If you have any information for that or an tutorial .. Thank you you do good things
There is a way to start Windows, have software automatically start and have explorer not show up. Googling that will be your best bet, however, you did give me a tutorial idea. That's a really good one actually.
Brad, I don't think the exe loads the HDI by passing it as a parameter... it is not working for me, just like it is not loading it on the video... maybe we are missing another parameter switch ?
I had it working previously, but something broke or I have it wrong. There shouldn't be any extra command line parameters needed, but to be honest, documentation is scarce or in Japanese, and Google Translate doesn't do a fantastic job. I can't honestly say what it is.
All of those Arcade systems are set up the exact same way MAME is set up, so the MAME tutorial (though a tad outdated) is still a perfect base. Find a Model 2 rom set / BIOS, create the entry for the emulator, create a Sega Model 2 Platform and Scrape it as Arcade, then check the "Force MAME Metadata" on the last screen and it should import. The only key difference now is the Scrape as feature, so you can create custom platforms and still scrape the metadata, but otherwise all of those specific arcade systems / emulators all come from MAME. It's just that sometimes a specific emulator may work a bit better than MAME does. However, in my experience most games run just fine in MAME.
How about the new Neko II Kai? It is the reccommended Retroarch core these days for PC-98 but it struggles with some roms (especially those with english translation patches) - but they start fine in Anex86. Any idea how I could make them load in Neko II Kai?
I have have a decent amount of Data for the PC-98, let me how I can upload my data and add. I'm gurodragon on the LaunchBox forums, I have added a lot of my own images for Japanese tittles not filled in yet by your data base., would love to help.
It's actually fairly simple, just go to the Database site, create an account and start adding. You'll need to follow the guidelines though. There is also a Plugin in our forums download section for LaunchBox. It makes adding games from your library in to the Database easier. It's a user created plugin that just makes the process a bit faster. Here are the guidelines: docs.google.com/document/d/1wB80CH3zecXccfQ4Et8NxYa-G1bQuo7eo1YHvkYQ728/edit There's a thread on the forums with the link, and a topic about stuff. I try and post in there when I update them. We also have our discord server as well: discord.gg/X3Cwsyw

@@SentaiBrad Neko project II Kai works like a charm with retroarch
The BIOS screen you showed actually had 3 DIP switch options as well as the MEM switch. That's what the Japanese said.

Is neko project 2 emulation more complicted than that of dosbox?
The setup section was nice but when it came to loading games I have no idea how to actually load HDIs
Do I add the games to Launchbox as Roms or MS-Dos games?

I have an issue where whenever I click on a game it launches the same game. I have three games and whichever I click launches only the first game I playe din launch box.
I solved by only allowing one game in the games folder at a time. I have to move out the other games everytime I click on a specifric one.
I tried that with doom, it didn't go very well

VERY basic question, but does anyone know how to 'switch out' fdd files loaded in your drive slots without completely resetting the emulator?

Try converting the .d88 files to .fdi or .dcu with vfic, it could help

While PS4 controllers don't work natively in Windows, there are third party programs that try to bridge the gap. Look up DS4Windows.
