Been trying to get a mechanic to replace alternater in my Dodge Durango 2005. I came across your video and you put together a very well step by step video. You got me convinced I can do it myself. Thanks for the awesome video.
I had wondered if I may need to remove the air conditioning lines to pull the alternator up. But, your video showed me to remove it by pulling it through the back. This saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks!
Hey buddy I just wanted to let you know that I’ve never replaced anything on their car hood before other than a battery but with your instructions on how to replace the alternator I had it done in about 25 minutes for a newbie moving very slowly obviously getting stuck with the battery terminals not tightening up again however watching your video really help me out and didn’t give me trapped in on this Sunday afternoon got up in early and right before church I got it in so thank you
If it's the correct alternator for your vehicle, unhook the battery and transfer the wires from the old alternator to the new, they usually only go on one way so that you do not connect anything the wrong way. If it's bad we sell NEW alternators on our website 1aauto.com or you can call our sales staff @ 888-844-3393 Have a great day.
@PaloSouvannavong A screeching belt is one sign especially on a vehicle that has a self tightening serpentine belt. Lights dimming with lower engine speed is another sign. If your battery warning light comes on at an odd time that is the sign of a bad alternator. Many times an alternator gives out with little warning. There is no real set period for replacing them. I have had them go at 70K and last through 100K+
+David H Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
At the beginning of the video we explain and list all of the tools you should need to make this repair including the different socket sizes that you should need. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Thank you! Have a 2001 dakota, that the dash lit up lije it was Xmas again with lights. Long story short, everything drained as I drove, an let me sit totally dead at a stop sign 1 mile from house. Battery is only 2yrs okd, so tomorrow I replace altenator thanks to your video! Any more parts needed, will be ordered from you guys!
How do you know when your altenator is going out? How often should it be replaced? My suv is at 87,000 miles and never had it changed. Should i be changing it soon? Thanks for the awesome video.
Thank you so much. Really not knowing much about autonrepairs at all, your video provided me step by step instructions on how to replace my alternator. I didn't know if I'd be able to do it but your video was EXTREMELY helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Great video. My alternator is on the right side. 2001 dodge durango 4.7 Looks like yours was on the left. (May be wrong) I also only needed 10mm ratchet to discconect battery, 15mm for the three bolts on alternator and a 13mm for the bolt on top connecting a wire. So kinda weird that u named all the other sizes. But very good video. Keep it up for us DIYers. Thank you for your time and effort of the video.
@johndeer2780 You may be able to. The best thing to do would be to join an online Dodge Ram forum to see if any of the member have done this and what would be involved with the swap. Hope this helps you out.
Very nice. No stupid pulsing music. Thanks. No having the first 5 minutes being an offscreen voice talking about what he will do. Awesome. You speed thru the easy parts and now I know that I need a 7mm, 10 mm, 14mm socket and 14mm wrench. I will buy something from you someday in thanks. Bookmarked Liked and COMMENTED. Good job guys!
Can I leave the battery hooked up? I like a nice jolt of energy in the morning. Just kidding, this video may come in super helpful today, so thank you for sharing!
+danskate215 No problem. Glad to hear it helped you out. For anyone looking to replace their alternator, 1A Auto carries the part here: www.1aauto.com/1A/alternator/Dodge/Durango/1AEAL00376?RUclips&CTA%20Comment&ATony
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 i disconnected the negative battery cable then installed the new alternator and put all the connections back on the new alternator but when i reconnect the cable to the battery it burns out the new alternator any thoughts
can you explain which terminal leads are positive an negitive. i got an alt from a dakota looks just like that and how can you test it not being in the car? MOST IMPORTANT What terminal leads are the pos and neg? there are 3 of what i see on mine as well. thanks
My 99 Durango is different. 15mm tensioner. 9/16 nuts and bolts. 10mm battery connection to the alternator and a plug in connector. After gathering all of those recommended mm tools I had to go to my neighbor to borrow some tools cause my shop is on the other side of town.
My check Gauges light comes on my 2000 Dodge Durango 4.7L I replaced the Battery & Alternator still comes on but only when on freeway going 60/70 speeds when I come to a Stop the light turns Off Any Suggestions???
I just replaced the alternator in my 2000 Durango, and I only needed a 10mm, a 14mm, & a 15mm. The 15 was only to move the tensioner. Took me 2 minutes longer than the video.
😮 do you have video removal of the Big alternator bracket Alternator and ac compressor sits on? There's 3 inch hose attaches to water pump. I would to see how thats done before I try attempt it myself. Ive changed my Dakotas waterpump, idler pulley tensioner. New waterpump is sealed. New thermostat installed. Now theres small leak behind my guess its the 3inch hose from pump to block. Ive removed power steering see if its from freeze plug, the freeze plug is fine. Can someone link a video to the brackets removal. Thankyou
+Kurt M We currently do not have a new alternator for that application. Here's a link to the section of our website for your truck, if you would like to see what we have to offer goo.gl/CqnrGB
Good info except for my 2001 4.7 liter Dakota, the connections were different. One plug in the back and one bolted connection to the battery. The '01 also has three bolts connecting to the block. Took me, an absolute idiot with a tool in my hand, less than an hour.
Good video but your alternator seemed to come out easily compared to mine. Mine had a sleeve or insert in the bolt hole on the lower back side that prevented the lower bracket from coming apart from the mount. I ended up breaking the mount at the bolt hole to get the damn thing out.
It is NOT correct for a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7L, no screws to remove from rear of alternator, only 3 bolts and a nut holding the wiring on the top.... Pfft....

You may want to check to see if there's a draw on the battery which is causing it ot go dead.
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 i disconnected the negative battery cable then installed the new alternator and put all the connections back on the new alternator but when i reconnect the cable to the battery it burns out the new alternator any thoughts

New waterpump is sealed.

I have a 98 durango 5.9 how can I tell which alternator is the correct one?
If possible "always" take the old part with you to the auto parts store. That way you can compare. And do not ever assume they don"t make mistakes
Good info except for my 2001 4.7 liter Dakota, the connections were different. One plug in the back and one bolted connection to the battery. The '01 also has three bolts connecting to the block. Took me, an absolute idiot with a tool in my hand, less than an hour.
Will an alternator for a 1999 Dodge Dakota fit a 1999 Dodge Durango?
+Dan Jipson No, this part will not fit a Durango.
Re : Check Gauges light coming on the Voltage also jumps all the way to 18
01 Dakota with 4.7 15mm for 2 bolts on front
Good video but your alternator seemed to come out easily compared to mine. Mine had a sleeve or insert in the bolt hole on the lower back side that prevented the lower bracket from coming apart from the mount. I ended up breaking the mount at the bolt hole to get the damn thing out.
Where does it say how many amps it has
It is NOT correct for a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7L, no screws to remove from rear of alternator, only 3 bolts and a nut holding the wiring on the top.... Pfft....
It's a 8mm
