    Loved this way back then. Sparked in me a love for the country and a simpler life. I have been blessed enough to have lovin' and a reasonable amount of money. They weren't easy to come by but giving them away is much more fun.

    Had completely forgotten this song till I watched Boy swallows universe.
    Now at 77 it seems very relevant.

    In that world of Video tape and soggy archival potential I guess, thank the world for a National Film and Sound Archive.
    You guys really made a National treasure and just kept on going
    Cheers

    I first saw this wonderful film clip as a 12 year old - and soaked up the sense of questing & travelling for something new and different beyond my western suburbs. This song still gives me that sense of better things ahead..& of course I never tire of hearing it. Thank you Mike & Spectrum!

    Spectrum originally recorded at Dixon Recording Studios East Malvern. One of the dudes after a recording taught me to play Blackbird.

      David - please forgive the long pause before replying to your comment but I've seriously neglected RUclips for a number of years and have just resumed being interested during these Covid times. I'm wondering if you can recall the year I recorded at your studio. I'm wondering if it was actually Spectrum as I don't remember recording in East Malvern. I'm thinking it may've been a previous band. Spectrum was formed in 1969 if that helps.
      Thanks for getting in touch though. I'm having a book written about my life and times and your recollections will; be invaluable.
      Mike.

      Mike Rudd. Mike, it was at my brother Paul Dixon’s studio in Illowa Street East Malvern. If I recall correctly it would have been sometime after mid 1969 as, I was working at GTV. If I recall correctly Spectrum took that song to Armstrongs in South Melbourne just after the recording with Paul. Please correct me if I’m off. The guy who taught me Blackbird, was fresh out of the UK. Lovely bloke, I’m not familiar with the group members names.

      @@thehificlub Thanks for getting back so promptly. Hmmm.. I'm no wiser, and possibly even more confused. Is Paul still around? A confirmation of the date would be handy. We didn't have anybody remotely English or fresh from England in the band at that stage. No pressure at all but whatever you come up with would be helpful. Thanks.

    • @thehificlub
      @thehificlub 4 года назад

      Mike Rudd. No, Paul unfortunately passed on in 2000. Looks like I might have my facts wrong, did you record “I’ll be gone” at Armstrong’s? If no, who did the final take?

    • @elbide
      @elbide  4 года назад

      Sorry to hear about your brother, David. We did eventually record the IBG single at Armstrongs. Precisely when is again an issue but late '69 or early '70 is as close as I can get. I had a band in 1967 called The Chants and I wondered if that might be the session at your brother's studio you're thinking of. We recorded a couple of tracks - One, Two Brown Eyes and My Girl. I thought it was somewhere in East Malvern. No song called I'll Be Gone in sight then. We recorded a demo of I'll Be Gone at Yarrabank studios in '69 using Freshwater's B3. i'm throwing info at you now, but the past is so murky when you leave it for fifty years or so.

    Love watching this clip!! I always womder whereabouts in Melbourne or thereabouts the.country roads were...im thinking Sunbury? Bulla? Or possibly way over tue other end near Launching Place (but doesnt look bushy enough). Or even possibly an area all now built up. I love to wonder! The airport, im assuming is Tullamarine in its infancy? I love thinking back to.what approx.1970s version of Melbourne was like. If anyone knows the areas shown, would be amazing!

    Recently bought my first harmonica JUST so I could play this.
    I really want to add this legendary song to my playlist on either Spotify or Apple Music but there is no original - just a live version.
    Mike, is it missing from streaming deliberately? Got all my music in this format now.
