  • Tombstone (1993) has to be one of the best western movies. It puts multiple levels of intense, dramatic presentation into a modern form of western film. It learnt a lot from two great movies:
Gunfight at O.K. Corral (1957) for its original drama, and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) for the way it presented a drama.

I think this film was absolutely amazing and yes it did have its ups and downs and downfalls and not staying true to some characteristics, but I love how they portrayed doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp especially doc Holliday. Val kilmer really made it a wonderful day and Kurt Russell made a pretty damn good Wyatt Earp. Besides next to the Wyatt Earp movie with I forget his name but he's one of my favorite actors and I lose his name right now long-haired really out there stubborn mean Jeff Bridges that's the name. But also just a great movie and it brings me to tears every time I watch it.

I know this will be considered sacrilegious to fans of this film, but IMHO Russell didn't make a terribly compelling Wyatt Erp. For one thing he wasn't at all physically intimidating being of basically average height and build. Another thing was that mustache looked kinda silly on Russell. It's as though the filmmakers were using the oversized mustache to make Russell's Erp seem tougher and more manly and it didn't really work. On the other hand Sam Elliott about a dozen years previous to this would have made a superb Wyatt Erp. Ah,what might have been! Allow me to recommend John Sturges' Hour Of The Gun(1967). James Garner cut a fine manly figure as Erp and gave a wonderfully convincing performance, even better than Lancaster I think. And I'm a big Lancaster fan. The thing is Tombstone was a surprise hit and Hour Of The Gun was an utter flop. I guess I never will understand the taste of the American public. Anyway please understand that I am in no way denigrating those who like Kurt Russell and/or this movie. I just thought I'd respectfully give a dissenting opinion as long as it's still allowed.

Russell indeed added some great intensifying performance into this movie. Without his performance, this movie would be too weak. 🕹
