Yeah an the Combine should be embarrassed about that. Dont think an evil sci fi force has been so embarrassed and humiliated since the ewoks kicked stormtrooper ass on Endor in the original star wars trilogy
There's actually an in-universe moment in Nova Prospekt where Breen is chewing out the Combine forces for not being able to stop Freeman, saying, "this man isn't a soldier or a saboteur, he's a theoretical physicist for God's sake!" You can hear it over the tannoy.
Valve has so much potential story material to utilize. They could go prequel and show the 7 hour war and it's immediate aftermath. Or they could wrap the story they left unfinished. Graphics isn't even a big deal. Just do the story and we're happy. This isn't dnf at all.
There IS more. The portal storms created from the Black Mesa event allowed many alien creatures from Xen to crossover to Earth all over the globe. When this happened it caused mass panic amongst the human population and people fled the countrysides for the cities. Unknown how long this lasted until the Combine showed up, but supposedly lots of people died from attacks from the Xen aliens & wildlife and the rest fled to the cities which were much easier to defend. Then the Combine showed up out of nowhere. If I recall correctly, the Combine used the wormholes or whatever they were to teleport their armies to Earth. The most devastating thing they did was they teleported these giant towers like the one in City 17 straight into the hearts of cities across the planet, and when that happened it caused massive devastation and killed millions. If that's not bad enough, as we well know, the towers opened up and let loose the armies of the Combine which supposedly contained much worse and terrifying creatures than the ones we're familiar with. The creatures we encounter in Half-Life 2 are mostly just a token police force.
The earth wasn’t invaded by the overwatch, they were invaded by the full combine *army* . This means billions, likely trillions, of robots, mechs, etc. invaded earth and incinerated any opposing forces. The overwatch are very very very, universally, extremely, weak compared to the combine army. This is why freeman is even able to have a fighting chance. If the combine army were guarding earth, he’d never get close to killing one soldier. They are using earths resources to fuel their fight to control all of the dimensions.
You are a bold one I want some Combine Scientists to open a new portal and let forth a single Dalek that goes on a murderous rampage before downloading their interdimensional info so that it can summon a Dalek Invasion...
It is unlikely that the 7 hour war was even their full forces. This is because the combine have been shown to have incredible efficiency and adaptability. With an emphasis on efficiency, and considering they know their going to invade primitive beings, it is incredibly unlikely that they would use what they would consider a formidable force to fight primitives.
A newspaper in HL: Alyx has an image of a ravaged UN building with a caption stating that it was bombarded from space. It's highly likely the 7-hour war was nothing more than orbital bombardment, any invading ground forces were likely nothing more than spotters for the orbiting ships.
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Gaben The Wise, so powerful and wise he could use the force to influence the midichlorians to create Half Life 3
His franchise became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing its power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentices everything he knew, then they created greater video games and surpassed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save other franchises from death... but not his own.
Actually, there is an explanation as to how the Combine invaded Earth during the 7 Hour War. In Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar (a book about HL2's development published by Valve), a character 'cut' from the final game named 'Eli Maxwell' was supposed to explain to Freeman about how the Combine invaded. Apparently, (according to him) the Resonance Cascade had created multiple Superportals throughout Earth which -- in turn -- caused Portal Storms all over the planet. The Combine sent Citadels through each of these Superportals in order to ensure that they "stay open". After that, they deployed their massive army on Earth. Maxwell was also supposed to show Gordon a slideshow of some pictures of the 7 Hour War, one of them being a picture of the Consul (another cut character) declaring global surrender of humanity while -- in the background -- two Combine dropships can be seen preparing to land, buildings destroyed and much more carnage. But since this stuff is pre-release, we can't know for certain that this plot point is "canonical" or not.
It makes quite sense. The Combine didn't show up until the dimensional rift was extremely wide and spreaded all over Earth. Even before they arrived, the world was in a mess, millions and millions of people died already. The Combine just broke what remained of a frontier and poored on Earth.

Well, considering how short the “war” was, we can assume a few things. 1)The attack would have to be from everywhere at once: Judging from what we see of Combine forces, they aren’t much faster than our military forces, which means it was likely overwhelming firepower which arrived on every region of the planet. 2) They didn’t face much of a fight: Seven hours is not nearly enough time to mobilize any military forces, it’s like nobody knew what was going on. Most troops probably dead before they could even get out of their barracks, the most resistance probably coming from forces already on missions. Unlikely that the Combine faced any serious amounts of armour and their forces slaughtered any infantry. The actual fighting probably lasted only 2-3 hours, the rest was just the UN getting their shit together and the actual process of surrendering.

I think that a big part of why the Half-Life's universe is so fascinating and exciting is that it doesn't care to explain itself too much. It leaves space for imagination to complete the picture and makes it unique for every player. Valve are masters and they do it intentionally. They could have packes both Half-Life chapters with long narrated cut scenes and intros explaining everything in details. it also adds to the realism of the narrative, if it were to happen in real life the scale of the whole conflict is way too big for us to comprehend it let alone document it, think about it, we went from dominating the planet for thousands of years only for all of that to come crashing down in less than a day, we just wouldn't be able to process what the hell happened.

The combine is probabpy far more powerfull than a tier 3 civilization, not only dominating galaxies, but also entire dimensions, the fact that they prob demand an entire new tier on the Khardashev scale is mind blowing
Well a Tier Omega civilization is the highest tier on the Khardashev scale and they have the ability to create entire new universes. The Combine are strong, but I don’t think they are that advanced yet.
I am becoming a big fan of Half Life. I never understood it because no one I was around introduced me to it proper. Getting to know it over the last few months has been incredible, very grateful for it, this is quite the series! And so much your style. I love the weirdness that isn't strictly weird for the sake of itself, there is also a point to it. Whether it is an exploration of horror, oppression, human ingenuity, sci fi, what have you, Half Life does it extraordinarily well. I respect it's presentation of independence and individuality holding out against external control from malevolent forces. Humanity's arrogance being barely balanced by our creativity, compassion and ingenuity.
Well there were other groups on Earth left that would not work with the Combine *cough* Aperture *cough* but SHE just likes to test and test and test until the end of time
There is a reference in portal s credit , that implies that glados shits herself by The thought of combine ' s dominion of earth , and prefers to stay inside , where they don t know of her , anyway combine surely found aperture science tech, as evidenced by many technologies typical of The enrichment centre now in The hands of the combine . with this i don t think that they found it , maybe other aperture facilities...
I like to think all of the combine military forces you see on earth are *light occupational forces* a very miniscule presence that's just there to keep the planet subjugated. The combine was mentioned to be an *interdimensional empire,* such a classification warrants *extreme* technological capabilities. This means that the armies deployed on earth by the combine are *unimaginably* more powerful than what we later see in half life 2, one of the newspapers pictures the HQ of the UN in ruins, it's definitely safe to assume that weapons of mass destruction were used during the war. We are but tiny ants when compared to the enormous military might of the combine.
Mr. EckhartsLadder, I loved your video! However there is one factual error you made at 1:36 (I'm a LORE Expert at Half Life). The United States HECU Marines and any leftover military forces, actually never moved into Xen to neutralize remaining hostile forces. The only known member of the military to enter Xen besides the Black Mesa staff, is Corporal Adrian Shephard. The scene you have with the Gman in Xen with the bodies of dead Marines and destroyed vehicles, is a result of the Gold Source Engine limitations back in 1998. It was meant to be on Earth since the ground and surrounding textures are that of the desert and Black Mesa scenery, but the engine couldn't switch to an Earth night skybox mid-level unfortunately. Valve developers had to leave it as one of the Xen skyboxes since it looked dark and just never ended up changing it in order to make their release date for the game. It was never fixed even with the Source Engine conversion of the game later on.
The "combine" we seen in half Life 2 are manipulated humans that have been converted into cheap brainwashed combat units with very low training They arent the real combine, rather a very cheap way to keep earth in check as they dont even waste their own soldiers
I love how the Freeman's Mind series can release a fifteen-minute episode about once a quarter (a slow pace, but absolutely worth it), and is _still_ managing to catch up with Valve.
I personally think it went similar to Denmark's invasion in World War II. There's no indication to suggest that humanity wouldn't have been able to put up a fight - it's possible that the international community just realised there was no way they could've fought off the invasion in the end. Still, their full invasion force is definitely much more powerful than what we see in Half-Life 2, but who knows.
Fun Fact: The 7 Hour War is based upon _The War Of The Worlds,_ by H.G. Wells, in which the Martians had conquered the Earth in seven hours. Half-Life, in general, has many nods to plenty of classic sci-fi and conspiracy stuff, if one (like me) is nerdy enough to know them.
I just played through Black Mesa, Half-Life 2 (with MMod), Episode 1 & 2 (also with MMod) and HL:Alyx. I've never been more ready for Half Life 3... HL2 holds up surprisingly well if you mod it a bit. Just goes to show how genius level design and story telling will always stand the test of time. I'm also glad that Black Mesa was so well done, and Xen was expanded upon greatly to show much more Black Mesa 'influence" as well as how the Combine were also controlling Xen and the Voutigaunts (something HL1 didn't really do that well).
I played them out of order, starting with 2 and then Ep. 3 and then going to the first one. If you start at the very beginning, then play the other 2 games you will enjoy it. The story is completely unique and I really can't think of any other sci-fi universe even remotely similar in style or lore to the Half-life universe. It really makes you think about what is going on in the game and it may not give you a ton of information explaining a bunch of stuff outright, but it gives just enough info just so you can come to the proper conclusions (with your own spin on them too). Gameplay is solid as well, for a game so old it is amazing how well it plays still (in my opinion and i am sure others as well). Also the whole silent protagonist thing is actually pretty nice, besides the info already given about Gordan Freeman, it lets you come up with your own story in a sense. You should definitely play them, and if the graphics are a problem then I do believe the modding community for them has some graphic overhaul mods. anyways, just figured i would throw in my 2 cents.
A lot of people say that the combine must be weak because one man is defying all of their attempts to kill or capture him, but wouldn't it be fair to say that Gman is manipulating probability in Gordon's favor so that he never dies?
I really think diversifying your content a little bit is smart. Keeps stuff fresh. Also good that you'll still do lots of Star Wars. Keep up the good work man.
A bit of clarification. The portal storms didn't start till after the Nihilanth's death, because the Nihilanth was focusing the rift between Earth and Xen on the Black Mesa area. Once it died, it obviously couldn't focus it any more, so widespread portal storms started happening.
I always wondered: how did Wallace Breen, instead of a President or politician, come to represent humanity or have the authority to surrender? How did he survive Black Mesa? Did the government not want him dead, since he'd be on a hit list of people who participated in/caused the resonance cascade? My best guess would be that the Gman was somehow involved in humanity's surrender...
It can be implied that HL2 takes place during the 2020s which would be now but in this timeline every resource is drained by Combine forces and almost all of humanity is oppressed.
I would LOVE to see more stuff like this. Honestly, you have some of my favourite content on RUclips, and Half-Life and Portal are my favourite games of all time. Plus, we're kind of starved of any good Half-Life content right now (obviously from Valve, but I mean more from the community) aside from Freeman's Mind 2 (which is of course amazing). Anything you can do regarding this franchise will be absolutely soaked up and appreciated. Amazing job as usual.
Love it man, the Half Life world is ripe for your style of imaginative exploration and there is a great cross over of interest with your audience. Keep up the good work
Love love love the Half-Life universe, and seeing fresh, new videos about it after such a long time since the game's peak point is refreshing and very welcome. More Half Life please!
You should do a video on Raising The Bar and the rather extensive cut half-life 2 story. The mod Dark Interval is a partially complete, faithful adaptation of some of this material.
Another thing to add on this. Earth at this point was already fighting a war against the xen creatures so were significantly weakened, were extremely drained and exhausted from fighting the trillions of critters. This allowed the Combine to absolutely incinerate the earths militaries, not that they stood a chance to begin with but this is also a huge reason why earth surrendered so fast.
@Edward Branton A strider, of course. The combine has modified and brainwashed soldiers, so there would be a 0% chance of some of them escaping or refusing to carry out orders
I've always thought there was more rebel factions not just the one you see in half life 2, like maybe a rebel faction that are human supremacists, so they hate the vortigaunts almost as much as the combine.
I mean humans don’t currently seem good at doing peace so not unlikely and if not now then later. That memory erasing water might help in the unity thing though.
This unfunny joke is old And there's already a lot of shit to debunk this First of all, Gordon is fighting the combine OVERWATCH, not the combine MILITARY. Second, If that portal never closed, they'd be dead in less than an hour, since earth doesn't have a military force anymore. Why? Because the earth fought back the MAIN COMBINE MILITARY with their Trained Marines, Air force etc. not undertrained guerilla forces.
I like the way half life portrayed the combines occupation, the reason why humans even stand a chance against the combines presence is because its just a tiny inexperienced occupation force using humans and a few other extraterrestrial beings and technology from other dimensions and stuff

You're the best, man!
Looking forward to you pitting the combine against other factions!
Which makes a lot of sense, because the combine use the high energy pellets right? Which was originally used by aperture
Not to mention apertures endless goldmine of portal technology
The british empire didn't use their special power
*COLONIZATION*

This is not the combine
These are just temporary peace keepers
The "combine" we seen in half Life 2 are manipulated humans that have been converted into cheap brainwashed combat units with very low training
They arent the real combine, rather a very cheap way to keep earth in check as they dont even waste their own soldiers

Took the whole earth in 7 hours while can't take out a scientist with a crowbar
That's how powerful Gordon is
To be fair, that was merely a token police force that Gordon fought, not the invasion force.
I’m doing that now lol
Thanks for this change of pace.
Never played this, but u talking about it makes me want to play it. Thx for the video!
Get it. November 19th is its 20th anniversary and there might be a sale. Grab the Orange Box and Half Life, it's worth it.
@@sandwich_masterX. Thx for letting me know!
There is no ep3 though ;_;
Johnson Meat Tower how the fuck did you play episode 3, are you a time traveler, and can you give me ep 3
A lot of people say that the combine must be weak because one man is defying all of their attempts to kill or capture him, but wouldn't it be fair to say that Gman is manipulating probability in Gordon's favor so that he never dies?
Combine is basically playing Clash of Clans raiding people's base but planet edition

I really think diversifying your content a little bit is smart. Keeps stuff fresh. Also good that you'll still do lots of Star Wars. Keep up the good work man.
0:30 can someone tell me what this is, please :]
Don't know what it is, but it looks like something from Star Wars.
It's the Mass Effect 3 intro
A bit of clarification. The portal storms didn't start till after the Nihilanth's death, because the Nihilanth was focusing the rift between Earth and Xen on the Black Mesa area. Once it died, it obviously couldn't focus it any more, so widespread portal storms started happening.
I always found it weird that earth lost without a fight. Knowing us, we'd literally forsake the universe than actually loose.
It was a fight. We got knocked out after seven hours of combat. Its supposed to be a refence to the six day war.
@@johnwest5957 I get that but I think we'd rather make the earth uninhabitable than let them invade us.
The Combine VS The Flood would be interesting
Yep
It can be implied that HL2 takes place during the 2020s which would be now but in this timeline every resource is drained by Combine forces and almost all of humanity is oppressed.
Seems about right except its toilet paper, hand sanitizer, masks and races like asians and blacks are being somewhat oppressed

Interesting topic, from a certain point of view. Personal shield technology compared: Dune, Halo, Star Wars, Star Trek and Stargate.

Love love love the Half-Life universe, and seeing fresh, new videos about it after such a long time since the game's peak point is refreshing and very welcome. More Half Life please!
Good to see people still talk about the Half Life Universe.
I didn't know you would actually do it
Are you ever going to do a vsbattle with the Combine

@Edward Branton A strider, of course. The combine has modified and brainwashed soldiers, so there would be a 0% chance of some of them escaping or refusing to carry out orders
1:35 The HECU didn't go to xen, it was meant to be earth but due to GoldSRC engine limitations, they couldn't change the skybox
I love your Star Wars/Halo content and good on your for reaching out from it with stuff like this
I've always thought there was more rebel factions not just the one you see in half life 2, like maybe a rebel faction that are human supremacists, so they hate the vortigaunts almost as much as the combine.
Idk how supreme humans feel when they lost in 7 hours lol
I mean humans don’t currently seem good at doing peace so not unlikely and if not now then later. That memory erasing water might help in the unity thing though.
Ive waited for this video. Thank you for making this. Keep up the great work
Universal Union logic:
Can conquer the the whole world.
Can't stop a guy with a crowbar.
This unfunny joke is old
And there's already a lot of shit to debunk this
First of all, Gordon is fighting the combine OVERWATCH, not the combine MILITARY.
Second,
If that portal never closed, they'd be dead in less than an hour, since earth doesn't have a military force anymore.
