Just as bad or maybe worse than "I carry a gun" is "I carry a knife", so many I see who believe that have never considered how to get their knife into play quickly without getting stuffed, or they carry in such a way it's too easy for an assailant to take. There are so many elements to self defense that need to be considered and practiced, far too many go for the easy answer and fool themselves into thinking they are protected. I agree that most people who practice Tia chi don't understand self defense. Tia Chi had most of the light sparring and force on force drills stripped away in the early 1900s to make it more accessible and practice able to the masses in China for the purpose physical therapy, but prior to that it was one of the go to martial arts for millatary men and body gaurds. Thankfully some people like the Moontogues are trying to revitalize that side of Tia Chi.
I'm no fan of Tim "rules-for-thee-but-not-for-me" Kennedy as a person, but there is no denying that he's an expert in martial concepts (hand-to-hand and weapons). Just because someone's a dick, or you disagree with them (strongly) on certain topics, it doesn't mean they have nothing valuable to teach you. Combatives use martial arts but martial arts aren't necessarily Combatives. Don't forget each MA has vastly different styles and instruction based on what school you're at. I can only speak to BJJ/sub grappling and we train self defense/striking and realistic scenarios, vs other schools that focus on more sport bjj.

That's great Tim but what if you just had your third back surgery doing PT severe pain have nerve damage and unable to fight , even having Extensive training . Do you think it's ok to pull a gun on someone or several people that are going to harm you and they are unarmed

I have worked on a smorgasbord of things from boxing to Muay Thai, Jui Jitsu, how to fight and protect my gun on the ground and standing, plus a few other things, like Fighting Pistols one & two, and survival shooting! I'm 70 years old now and arthritic and I move a lot slower, but I know enough that I can always defend enough to get to my gun. Knife fighting is going to be my last choice. But having a knife I can throw from twenty to fifty feet is always a good option if it's the right kind of knife!
