It seems obvious to me that the song is in G minor. Especially if you look at how Madeon plays this song live, it always has some darker bass-driven section that's entirely rooted in G minor. But it's also worth noting that in Madeon's live shows, he's used You're On's chord progression to transition both into and out of C minor before. He's placed it after Porter Robinson's Sad Machine in the Shelter live tour bc it's in E flat major and has a chord progression that ends on Cm7, and he's just held out the C bass note at the start of the loop as a transition into his song Nirvana in the Good Faith live tour. The Bb7 chord works here because it resolves to Cm7, which contains all 3 notes of an Eb major triad, making it sound like a correct resolution. Rex Orange County uses the same trick in his song Television where an A7 chord resolves to BbM7.
To my ears, I can be wrong. it is a modified chord used in a lot in daft punk song. To make it simple, I am just using white keys. Dm -> F -> Am instead of G, it is C7, C7 resolve to F, instead it went to Dm which is the responding minor scale of F. In the synth melody it even added 9th note to the root note of each chord, making it even harder to tell. This is what made Madeon, his songs are rich in harmonies. This Classic Dm-F-Am-G can be interesting just by modify the sequence, Kygo's song Raging. He changed it to F-Am-G-Dm and it sounds like a whole new chord progression. Sorry about the long message.
Always great information in your videos. Glad to see you back, and just as i have started to get into production again. Good timing :) Also, I'm first nerds!!
I personally thought that the last chord of the chorus progression is a Bb major 7th chord, which also still validates your point! Also I think it's in G minor cause of the songs Madeon plays around You're On in both the album and in his shows
Hi - First of all, thank you for such great videos! I greatly enjoy the "breakdowns"! I was searching for a review on Chicane and could not find any to my surprise -- out of curiosity, are you considering reviewing a song from Chicane in the near future? Have a great week! Stay safe!
oh man, ive been sitting here with the guitar in my hand thinkin "uhh i dont think G feels like home, Im feeling like its Bb when i play the melody", and then it hit me that G minor is relative to Bb major, and i feel a bit silly now.
@Matt Donner You did both. You've done two videos on Isometric, a video on Shelter, and now two videos on You're On. It's still on the channel as Breakdown - "Adventure" by Madeon
@Matt Donner oh no no. I didn't mean it in the sound design over composition kinda way. It's just there are a loot of producers that don't know a whole lot about music theory and just use their ears to make these great compositions like "you're on". Btw i love these videos, wasn't trying to mock that hehe. Keep that up!
The year 3009, Matt is breaking down "Heavy with hoping" by Madeon.
@Matt Donner review another madeon song HAHA
Oh you should also break down Heavy With Hoping from his new album.

one of my all time favourite songs thanks for breaking it down
Happy to help, Matt! Great theory breakdown vid as usual!
I don't know what i have to wait longer for, Madeon releasing albums or Matt breaking them down 👀
HA!
OOof
i know nothing about music theory but your way of talking is very engaging and i am a big fan

Have to agree here. The C7 acts as a I7 which pushes your ear to the next part. Genius move.
This is so amazing my man I love these type of videos!
Matt is Madeon's dad. That's how he knows all his theory-tricks.
Matt Donner is my favourite teacher on RUclips

Yayy Matt is back

I'm dying to listen the full verion
Pyramind back! Madeon! YES!

Please do a breakdown of Above & Beyond - Sun & Moon ❤️
YES! FINALLY ♥️
Break Down Mania by Madeon
admittedly i have no idea what any of this really means, but I still enjoy it and maybe someday I'll understand haha
Matt Donner When?! Where? :o
Very interesting. When is it useful to not resolve a dominant?
@Matt Donner so does Madeon do this for every bar or does the first chord of the bar break the tension?
@Matt Donner I think I might have misunderstood. I missed that you said the b flat 7 is dominant to the c minor because it's relative to e flat major
@Matt Donner Yes! Thank you!
I don't mean anything negative by saying this, but you must be really fascinated by this song to make a video about it twice. Lol!
Didn’t you break this song down before?
@Matt Donner You did both. You've done two videos on Isometric, a video on Shelter, and now two videos on You're On. It's still on the channel as Breakdown - "Adventure" by Madeon
I'm pretty sure madeon never wrote it with theory in mind he just went for a certain feeling
@Matt Donner hoho the legendary matt donner what's up! I was trying to say producers don't think like composers :D But you might be right I don't know
