XS - size 0,2
S - size 4,6
M - size 8,10
L - size 12, 14
XL - size 16, 18
This is North American sizing. So if you buy something meant for Asia/Euro market then you need to go a size or two up.
Yeah for the euro market like two sizes up but for the Asia market I would say more than that

I partially think maybe the sales associates didn’t want to offend her and say “I think you’d be a large or an extra large” saying “medium” sounds more “normal” actually in the food industry a lot of places say small, regular, and large to target people to want to feel “regular”

Im a size 12, and I experience exactly what she does on a daily basis. Depending on the brand or store i can wear anywhere from a medium to a 2x. I have dresses from h&m that are 12s, as well as dresses from there that are a 14. My prom dresses were both 12s, yet i have a dress from target that i had to purchase in an xxl to have it loose on me. I have learned to simply buy what fits and not worry about the number or letter size. You’re never going to be the same size across the board, so get what you enjoy and makes you feel good!

I wear an 8, sometimes a 6. I have pants that are size 12, size 8, size 6, size 5. dresses that are a size 3 that fit amazingly, dresses that are a size L and too small, shirts that are XXL, shirts that are XS. I've started to finally realize that sizing is not very meaningful in the realm of female clothing. I've tried things on in the womens section and an XL is too small. I have size 6 pants from american eagle that are too loose, and a pair of size 12s I can't get past my knees. Same brand, same style of pants.
You and I share the same experience! I can be a M or a 2X! Sizes are just ridiculous, so I try not to care anymore. But it's still hard with body dismorphia.

its called "vanity sizing." the clothing industry used to have actual meanings for the sizes used, but some companies started giving bigger clothes smaller sizes so that people would want to come shop there because it felt good to get a smaller number. Then as people called for both larger and smaller sizes we invented sizes like 000 and 3XL and that skewed sizes further.
I'm about a size 12 as well, but my body is not like the girl in the video. So maybe a reason why they are so many different fits for one size is because they are so many body types that could be considered that size? It's kinda of a mess when you go shopping, but at the same time if every piece of clothing was made to fit only one body type per size, then a lot of us would be left out with nothing....
Alexia Hyde I feel that because I’m pear shaped with big hips and pants can fit my butt and hips super weird because of that. She def has a totally different shape than me and I’m also usually around a size 12 in pants.

You're right size 12 is 31, size 30 is 10, 29 is 8, 28 is a 6, 27 is a 4 , 26 is a 2 and 25 is what I am which is really a size 2 or 4 in all other brands but a 0 there
A size 27/28 is equivalent to a size 4-6 I believe! This girl was well misinformed! Also, a size 12 is definitely a large. This is from my experiences working at banana republic!

Jessica Abbott well if you look up size charts a 2 is equivalent to a 26 or a 26 waist. But like the video showed, many brands have different sizing! Or it could be that you just have a small waist/can fit into size 0 pants!...I just realized I totally read your comment wrong and it's too late to back track since I'm lazy. But you're totally right! 27 isn't a size 12 lol
I’m pretty sure the lady in Forever 21 just didn’t know so she made up an answer... lol. A 26 is about a 2, a 27 is about a 4, and a 28 is about a 6. It’s not exact of course but she was definitely way off with size 12. Plus Forever 21 sizing is so inconsistent within their own clothes that you might as well just be closing your eyes and picking a size at random.

Taylor E yup. I have worked there and they don’t train you on converting the sizes so it’s all guess work. And yes the sizing is incredibly inconsistent, as is the quality.

i was literally about to comment this! i'm size 10/12 at most places & its a good day if f21 in size 31 fit (then turn around to f21 plus sized pants in size 14 and they are easily four sizes too big!)

I’m 5’4” on a good day and 120lbs soaking wet, and I wear a small to medium top and medium to large pants at Forever 21. I’m a small/xs double 00-2 everywhere else

Yeah after a while i understood what works for my body and what doesn't, so for looser shirts and sweaters i could go a size down whereas i would have to go a size up for blouses. She should have compared similar items more
Girl! I’m a 0-2 and my waist (size) ranges from 23-25. No way that 27/28 is a size 12! And a size 12 in tops is typically always a large. I’m so sorry the employee was ruining your experience, but hey, that made for great content 😂

Nope. I honestly think we should just start using inches/mm/cm. Once I learned my measurements, shopping became so easy for me. Because just like the video states, there is no universal clothing size chart. That means these stores are just making crap up to make us feel better about ourselves.
My god I went to a store in America and as a British teen I didn’t know that the sizes were different and I found out I was a size zero. I literally didn’t know it even existed
TBHRocking that is actually kinda the way we have it in sweden for kidclothes. We base it on How tall you are. So if you are like 160 cm then you try the size 158/164 lol.
I’ve jut learnt to ignore sizes and just get what fits well I’m not big or small but I do have a large bust with a below average band size as well as larger hips. I used to be angry about having to buy larger clothes to fit certain parts of my body but now I don’t care because even if it’s a bigger size as long as it fits well and is comfy I look damn good because it is true that confidence change how you come across
The thing is it doesn’t make sense how it’s not the same across the board and that it makes online shopping, for example, a lot more difficult.

That’s generally my rule of thumb if there aren’t actual measurements I can go by.

Your sizing is US sizing mainly. In the UK sizing chart, 8-10 would be L(arge) mainly, and in Italian sizing or in Italy, 8-10 would be XL, if not XXL. It really varies. But, so far, I have founf the UK sizing accross and within stores to be the most consisten. European sizing varies more. American is just a mess for me, always different sizing in each store.

in the UK a size 8-10 is not a large. nobody in this country would expect to get a large for that. more like a small. size 12-14 would probably be a medium, and 16 plus a large.

My girl is a beautiful thick woman and sizing really gets to her. It plays on her depression and anxiety very badly. She could be a L or 18, 20,22,24 in bottoms and its frustrating for her and me. I need to be more patient with her...but as a guy my size is all the same in EVERY brand at ANY store. She love you guys and all of Buzzfeed so my question is can you do this on plus size to see how drastic of a difference it is? Maybe have Jazz and Kristin do it together?
The reason for that is because men's sizing goes off of the actual measurements and women's sizes go off of made up numbers. That's why we can be a different size at every store!

I thrift for clothes these days because I hate the feeling of shopping in clothing stores so much. Sizes are hard to understand in a thrift store and are wack anyway, I just ignore the numbers, eyeball it and have fun. Try it sometime! It's great. The jeans are all pre-broken-in so it's like shopping in your bff or sister's closet. Plus they're cheap, obviously. 😆👌

I'm a 12 in 90% of stores and I usually can't fit an XL at Forever21 tbh. Idk if it's because their stuff is mostly juniors cut or what but I feel like they tend to run weirdly small compared to other mall stores. Sucks too because their plus section is... not great.
itsthefarrahmonster -- I find that junior sizing (normally listed in odd numbers) runs smaller and tighter than ladies' sizing.
Finally exposing Old Navy!!! I'm a size 2 and literally have never been able to find a pair of pants that fit me there. They aaaaall run big.

Old Navy sizing does run big, I wear like a 16 or 18 in most stores but can fit in a 12 old navy.

Yeah i feel like the forever 21 stuff was all wrong because the lady she asked had no clue. Not really the sizing's fault there.
You know, I started to agree with you but I thought, she going into a store looking for a 12. If everything is in XXS- 3X and you ask an employee who gives you that answer, then you’re automatically going to go into this with the thought that they know what’s right, this is supposed to fit a 12 and I can’t even get it over my thigh. So then you size 2-3 sizes up and feel crappy about yourself and don’t know what you’re supposed to be wearing in that stores size range. It’s not just that they were sooo wrong, but also that them being wrong feeds into the notion that no one knows anything about sizing in general. 🤷🏽♀️ So. Annoying. 🙄

As an associate, people walk up to me all the time and say “what size do you think will fit me?” I always say a size smaller than what I actually think. It’s like when someone asks you how old you think they are. You always undershoot, it’s a loaded question
Can you have Jaz do this with plus sized stores and maybe even online retailers? I think it would be interesting to see what an 18 or 2x looks like from multiple brands

When are people doing to understand that is literally no solution to this problem. Everyone's bodies are too different for sizes to fit them exactly the way they are supposed to, no matter how many different sizes they're are. When you're shopping you just have to accept that you're going to have to try on multiple sizes. 🤷♂️
it would work better if they just put the measurements like mens clothes
All we are asking is consistency. If this shirt that i bought in this store is a small, a shirt in this other stores with the same size should be a small, that's all
If they just put measurements on the labels, it would at least be easier. You can just be like "welp, it is what it is", when there are a few simple things you can do
Sarah Heringer even so different stores market to different demographics and different garments are meant to fit differently. for example a uniqlo shirt will fit smaller than maybe target because it is mainly marketed and sold in asia and they typically have smaller body types than america.
M Amber mus men's clothing dont have specific measurements unless its jeans or suits? and even so women's jeans are sometimes also measured in inches and that also gets messy and inaccurate.
As a former forever 21 employee, she gave her the wrong sizes. A 12 in forever 21 is plus size. There are size 12 jeans in plus size which means shes probably 0X-1X in most of the plus size clothing.
Also, for anyone who can't figure out forever21 jean sizing. Take you normal size and add 21. If you're a size 4 you will be a 25. I say grab a size 25 and 26 and try them on. 27 and 28 is like a 6 and 7 (she got finessed)
So since she is a size 12, add 21 and thats 33. The highest they go in straight sizes is 31.
Netty Well I'm saying that this might help. Forever21 employees are NEVER trained about sizing. A coworker told me that he did this for customers and it worked. It did it and it worked about 90% of the time. I've seen size 12 in plus. That's why I said it. Everyone's body is different and every store is different. We did try to help customers as much as we could but once again, we were never trained on sizing. You can't get mad at the employees for trying.

I’m in the UK and buy almost all my clothes from H&M. I’m a uk 12 which is a us8 I think. The high waist jeans fit great but the low rise don’t they are always tight. Topshop jeans can be really small. I wear clothes that’s anything from a UK 8-14 depending on brand/item/fabric (us 4-10 I think). I ignore sizes now and just pick up what looks like it will fit. I used to feel so rubbish if I had to get a bigger size but now I know the sizes are so different everywhere and some places they are just crazy x

You’re going to make yourself look worse squeezing into something too small. it’s going to make you look bigger. buy the size up and it’s going to make you look thinner IMO. I always buy up a size in shorts especially bc you don’t want to look like a sausage stuck in the wrapper lmao

Size 12 is a 32-34 waist in pants... 27-28 is a 3/4... and a size 12 is right in the middle of large/xlarge for dresses. That sales associate doesn't know anything.

The information Jessica gave was very helpful. I didn't realize that most clothing stores now base their sizing on the age demographic they are targeting verses a standard sizing chart, this explains so much.

i dont associate myself with a certain size. I ask for both size 2, 4 and 6 and try all of them on. Cuz sometimes i want the shirt to be baggier some to be tighter etc. depends on the style. I rarely try only one size nowadays.

The reality is that most US retail stores have resorted to "vanity sizing", but some have not. Therefore making it confusing.

the funny thing is that, in the US, men's sizes for pants are usually in inches. there's a clear consistency in sizing that makes it easier for men to shop, and for others to shop for them. this is also the case for some international brands, which often use cm or mm to size "men's" clothes.
This is why I just buy men's pants. It's harder to find ones that fit since I need to compensate for my hips, but I prefer the fit and pockets compared to women's pants. I still try them on, but at least it's a narrower selection, and then I know through the inches whether I need to go up or down depending on size or length. More convenient, easier to shop, and all around a better experience.

I don't think that's a good idea. My Mom's usually even too small for EU size XS/34 and she only gets lucky if the store's sizes run small. If we would have universal sizes, then probably based on the majority of the women, she would have a huge problem lol

iBeFloe if they converted it incorrectly and the associate was wrong, then she wasn’t trying on a size equivalent to 12, like she was at other stores. That does affect the point of the video. For example, She could have been trying on a size that was technically a 7/8, not a 12 like the associate claimed and then of course it wouldn’t fit.

I work in a retail store and I can tell you a size 12 is a 31 or Large in pants and Medium-Large in Tops and dresses depending on style.
Size 27 is my size in jeans and im an 8....that sales associatd at forever 21 didnt know crap. And a 12 should be a large in dresses.

Since I'm so short (4'11) I have always wished that women's pants were sold the same way that men's are with a waist and an inseam size. I would definitely buy from someone who sold pants like that for women.

Just measure your waist with a measuring tape, and you’ll know, same with the length starting at your waist or just slightly above your belly button, it sucks how yalls sizing works, men’s is by waist and length size, you can find a 26x32 and a 38x34 it’s all very specific but if you know your size, it always fits well.

A lot of the time it depends on fabric. While all jeans are made from denim the elastane differs, the more elastane the more stretch the jeans will have. Also shirts, some are made from standard silk and some are made from stretchy silk, same material but will fit completely different even if they are the same size

I think sizing is so misleading because it depends on the cut and style.
I worked at an f21 for a while, associated have no training and typically do not know any sizes except for their own. In my store, we had the sizes written on a sticky note, that was immediately lost. If there was a size question, you either guessed, or called for a manager.

Top shop is too damn expensive, I haven't been able to fit into F21 or H&M in years. But I swear by my old navy jeans. They are the only place that have reasonably priced jeans that fit me. While I am a bigger girl (xl/14) shopping is a nightmare inducer. I avoid shopping at all costs because nothing ever fits and it makes me feel like 💩
Forever 21 is junior sizing. It’s a teenager store. It’s why it fits small. Old Navy fits becasue it’s sized properly.

I feel like it's not so much the sizes themselves that are the problem lately, it's the fact that the typically marketed body shape is hourglass or minimal curves which is difficult for people who have wider hips and a smaller chest or apple shapes who have a wider waist but smaller legs. I'm finding it so difficult to find a good pair of jeans lately because I have wide hips and chunky thighs, so trying to get jeans to fit the way I want them to is more trouble than its worth. They either don't go over my thighs at all, they're too slim in the ankle, or too baggy at the waist. I feel like I need a damn tailor to get a decent fit:')
Mood, im not even particularly curvy but I'd rather not take an angle grinder to the sides of my pelvis to get a pair of jeans on 😂 end up having to roll up every pair of jeans I own because that's the only way to get the thighs to fit!

I have an hourglass and i can hardly find anything that fit because i have a long body with a high waist. There are very specific styles that work better than most, but i dont always want to dress like my grandma did. I can either have length or shape.
I have short legs and a large waist so generally even low rise pants are mid rise on me and either super long and baggy or are a decent length but don't fit in the thighs. Even my best fitting pants are really baggy in the calfs, in other words it's a struggle
If you have a Primark in your area I would look at their jeans, specifically their 'super stretch ' ones. They've been my go to jeans for years since they basically fit everywhere

No one goes around checking your tags! Watching these size try on videos makes me feel really bad. I'm a size 4, usually a small in everything. I can always find clothes that fit me, and for tops, I can buy one size and they fit me perfectly fine. These videos make me realize how it's not like that for everybody...and finding clothes in styles that I actually like is already hard enough...
I know its not the point of the video, but I just thought I might say that just because you're a 12 in dresses or pants or whatever, it doesn't mean your shirt size is the equivalent of a 12. Some people have big thighs and/or booties and need pants that are big and shirts that are a smaller size. Some people don''t really have thighs or booties and need small pants, but have larger breats and need bigger sized shirts. My sister isn't even an extreme case of this but shes 5 foot 5 and weighs only 117 pounds. So she's tiny and must wear a small, right? No, she needs atleast a medium size shirt because her breasts are bigger than average for her thin body. And she has no booty so she can wear size 0 pants, but only if the length is right because of her long legs. I honestly don't know why pants for longer or shorter than average legs aren't more common because it just doesn't make sense for men's pants to have measured pant lengths to choose from and not women's pants.
xPurple Muffinsx yeah I mean I can wear a size 14 in anything cotton/nylon in shirts and dresses but 16 in anything fitted. 16 leggings and 18 in jeans. Never met anyone who was one size across the board for this exact reason
I literally can not wear H&M pants no matter what size they are. Its like the way they are cut just isn't made for more pear shaped curvier people. Glad to see im not the only one that has this problem there. Always find cute tops and dresses there though!
I haven't bought H&M pants for years, but the last time I tried it was a nightmare and I was not very curvy. I had a little bit of a booty because I worked out, but that was it. I was a size 4 in most stores at the time and could barely get the pants on in that store because they were made for people who can hide behind a telephone pole. No butt, no hips? Get yourself to H&M for a pair of pants. Everyone else, stay away.

I think it's because H&M is a European conpany, and in general Europeans are smaller than Americans.
I'm typically a size 14/16 and I was up to a size 22 in h&m jeans.. I'm like uhhh no.. I compared their "plus size" jeans to their regular jeans and a 10 was bigger than an 18. I also grabbed a pair of shorts in a large and they are baggy on me- though I wanted them to be.. sizing was so inconsistent in that store.. old navy tends to fit because of my butt.. forever 21 doesn't fit me right.. I fit into a 16 there but they feel funny in the butt.. and I've never been to topshop.. there's not one around here. Honestly my closest has anywhere from small to 3x so I just don't care about the "size" anymore.
Agree!!! I had these really cute pink pants I bought at H&M and they just were a disaster! I upsized because my usual size was a little tight and just made everything a little visible...anyways, the other one fit perfect! Except that within 30 mins of wearing it, it would stretch out so much it looked like I was wearing a diaper...
If you really want to understand what feeling depressed about your size means, try moving to China. I am a size 12/14 and literally noooooothing fits me in this country.
Can you ladies make a video on confidence while bra shopping? I'm a 34DD, and either I shop at Dillards where there aren't many 'pretty' bras my size, or I have to go to Victoria's Secret- which always destroys me mentally because of their posters of 'perfect' women.

Don't watch the posters at Victoria! It's not that hard, you know that only a select few look like the Angles and that it isn't a correct picture of women. So don't look at the photos or laugh at them. You'll ruin your life if you keep up comparing yourself to models in magazines. They are photoshopped and most likely don't look like that in real life. Just tune it out, your brain can handle to tune out that stuff and be happy with who you are!

Before even watching this video, I work at Old Navy and can tell you first hand that they are going to fit bigger than the average size.
Enrique Marshall amen. But at the same time each style and color fits differently because of the way they’re made. So when customers come in I always recommend to get the size they think they need and the one above or below depending on the color of the denim.
So I used to work at old navy for a while and we ALWAYS told customers to get a size smaller because everything runs really big. Everything at old navy runs huge

We pretty much suggested they buy online in petite XXS and what not. We also suggested other stuff in the store that runs more tire to size but if none of that worked then basically yeah.
A size 12 is not a medium lmao it's a large/xl at most retail stores and I know that cos I am a size 12 xD granted height plays a roll Into that as well and she looks petite so she may be smaller (I'm on the taller side so no clue).
Bottom line tho everyone's shaped differently, it's all beautiful, and clothing sizes are usually ridiculous :v

Shopping at H&M is always an unfortunate experience in my opinion. Anything that’s fitted or has a zipper is almost always super small. Maybe they are closer to the “true” size, but its so off from other stores that it’s frustrating. I wear a 27/4 at most places (mall stores and higher end brands) but at H&M I usually need an 8, and sometimes even a 10 for certain items.
Taylor E unless you're "super small" then it's never tight enough at the waist.. Especially super stretchy material, that they for some reason don't make tight enough, which is so strange, because it's stretchy, so it would just stretch if your waist wasn't as small.. And then sometimes dresses are loose at the waist but too tight in the butt area, so I get a squished butt and loose fabric on my waist.. Why? Fitting is just urghh..

What? H&M where I go, is correct sizes. I use size 12 at H&M and at all other stores where I live. So it's so very true here. I can clearly see I wouldn't be able to shop where you guys live. I've tried pants both here in Denmark where I live and Ireland where they both were true!
What I like about Topshop jeans is that they don’t just do sizes ranging to 6-16, but they do sizes in inches for the waist and length. I’m in between petit and normal so I can decide what length I want and what waist I want. It’s amazing

I think the comment on Topshop being a UK brand and their consistent sizing it SOOOO right! Sizing is so wonky over here and I’ve found the most comfortable sizing and the most consistently right on my body is from UK based companies like River Island and ASOS and Topshop. Their sizing is also isn’t as small and tight as US demographics so there is more choice for flattering clothes, not just tight and revealing everything.

R a c h e l I KNOW! I’m like, with UK based clothing brands I’m soooo consistant. I’m ALSO 1-2 sizes smaller in number and everything I order usually fits. It’s more about choosing what is my personal style and what I want to keep more than it not fitting. Everything over here is so tight and tiny that the sizing is inflated and wonky from STYLE to style, not just size to size. 🙄 Shopping at ASOS makes me so happy sometimes bc I can just order things and they advise you what size you actually are based on other people returning it or giving feedback. 🤣🤣
The way sizing for jeans works at forever 21 is 21 + whatever size jean you would normally wear. So a 27/28 would be a 6 or 7. A size 12 is 33.
i used to work at Forever 21 for 2 years and that sales associate definitely lied to her. The sales associate should have said, "I don't Know" lol. At best(and it's a stretch), a size 12 is a 30 to 31, AT BEST!!!. But really if your a size 12 you would have to shop in the Plus section. And even there the sizing is off.

I’m a size 12 and I love shopping until I start trying things on and find out they don’t fit. I’ve had all of these same experience as shown in the video but always thought my body was the problem. I don’t look overweight but in the wrong article of clothing, I feel obese - especially when trying to squeeze into someone else’s version of a size 12. Thank you for making this video and making it apparent that size 12 is not a universal measurement used across the board.
I’m also a size 12 and I find it so difficult to shop. I’ve discover I have the most luck finding jeans at American Eagle Outfitters and Target. It’s so discouraging to shop in most stores.

I’m I size 12 and tried the jeans from Topshop (sold at Nordstrom) btw and was very pleased. I also normally buy American Eagle but they’ve been stretching out more than I like. They had some Topshop Jamie high-wasted jeans on sale for like $36 in Nordstrom.

First of all the associate at FOREVER 21 need to learn their size system. Its by waist. You would be a 31 or 32 depending the stretch of the denim. Uneducated associates are pretty prevalent in fast fashion stores. Also, it can deter customers from buying from the stores because the customer feels as if they cannot find their size.
i tend to focus on what fits nice not on the size. because different stores are going to be way different for sizes.

The whole point is that consistant sizing would make things easier for everyone. And standard sizes use to actually be a thing, so yes, it IS possible.

I am not saying its not exhausting but its more of the fact why worry about if they have my size number than i just pick the next size up or down. Also investing in thr skill of sew has been super useful for hemming pants. Especially since i am super short
I live in Norway and I'm a teen and i mostly shop at places like H&M and Cubus and they honestly always fit if i go by what my usual size is, usually cubus has ages for Teen's clothing and they always fit me. I think me using non-fitting clothing is part of it but still
