  • Dino Buzzati is one of those Italian authors who deserve to be more famous and I am sure would be if they wrote in English. Often described as the Italian Kafka or the Italian Camus he was also a leading journalist, painter and illustrator of graphic novels.

    I discovered Buzzati through the Better than Food review. He's a great writer and his short stories are also very good. Coetzee, who wrote 'waiting for the barbarians' was heavily influenced by Buzzati and, of course, Cavafy, who wrote the original. Having read both, I think Buzzati's novel is the best, even in translation.
