IInvenTiv-2024 ST28: Low-Cost ASV for Bathymetry Mapping (IISER Bhopal)

  • Bathymetry (sea-floor/river-floor/lake-floor) maps are essential in understanding environmental ecosystem for healthy water bodies and also for water storage information that is key for water resource management and urban flooding. Obtaining bathymetry information is expensive due to the cost of the vehicle, logistics for the operation and limited availability of these systems for lakes and rivers. In order to promote Atmanirbhar program, it is essential that we need to obtain the bathymetry information locally to mitigate loss of habitat and socio-economic loss.
    We developed a low-cost Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) with a single beam echo sounder armed with a Gaussian process based adaptive sampling methodology to map the lakes quickly with less number of sampling points while ensuring the required map accuracy is achieved. The vehicle can acheive good accuracy with 60% less time to map.
