Met Merl on the vineyard at Carly Simons club and a few years later saw him in Crested Butte,CO and when I jumped on the stage to dance and a security guard came towards me ,Merl said it was fine,he knew me. I couldn’t believe he remembered me. He and his band and crew were completely cool and everybody was actually talking not hooking up. I have never seen a more mature and classy group backstage after a show.I am grateful to have those memories. One Love and Peace and Music forever🙏👁🕊👁💜🦋💓😘🌞🌈🍀🙌🏻🥰✍🏼🙏😇😇💓🌻
WHEN I HEARD MERL ON THE GRATEFUL DEAD HOUR BACK IN 96 THE WAY HE DESCRIBED JERRYS PLAYING TECHNIQUE AND HOW JUST AMAZING HE REALLY WAS, MERL SAID" HE COULD PLAY SO SWEET". THEN A LIVE VERSION OF POSITIVELY 4TH STREET FROM 73 WAS PLAYED. AND WOW JERRY HAD JUST DIED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. AND THEN I HEARD IT PUT INTO THAT CONTEXT. I NEVER WAS INTO THE DEAD AS MUCH AS JGB,ETC. MERL SAID THAT JERRY WOULD EXPERIMENT IN OTHER WAYS. HE TURNED HIS GUITAR UP LOUDER. HE COULD TAKE A LEAD IN ANYTHING YOU THREW AT HIM. MERL WAS BLOWN AWAY BY JERRYS TALENT. AND HEARING THAT MADE ME CRY. BECAUSE I HEARD HIS PLAYING IN A NEW WAY. I CAME TO LOVE THAT QUICK SUBTLY AND FAST RIFFS JERRY WOULD PUT OUT. AND TURN ANY SONG INTO A GEM. IVE BEEN ON THIS BUS SINCE I WAS 16. AND TECHNOLOGY HAS ALLOWED ME TO FINALLY BASICALLY, HEAR WHAT I WANT. LONG GONE ARE MY MUFFLED CASSETTE TAPES.
I always liked when he stood on business and said rap is not music, it’s rhythmic rhyming and it’s its own thing, separate from music which has melody and harmonics
This period between 73'-75 is incredibly cool. Intelligent music. Just so so much creativity going on in this period, different line ups, and tons of tunes / covers they play around with. this is a great example of what was going on in this period. an apex. Just so much material here in the jerry garcia band canon. so so much material. i think in a lot of ways this period was the freshest, the best. late 80's, early 90's = church. early and mid 80's are under rated and largely undiscovered - very release thirsty for that period. late 70's are great, and also creative, but different. this period is just...talk about a period that grows on you with age. This is where the rubber hits the road. Just gorgeous depth soul delicious funk music epitomizing not only the 70's, but Jerry. What the hell else could be better?
It's really a very informative age for us as students in the study of music. We have a pirates treasure trove of music from 72ish -76 or so seeing digital light of day and more importantly getting into the thoughts and souls of a new generation. Keep this shit alive‼ The world 🌎 needs the love💖, wisdom💡 and insight💭 of the poets📝, musicians🎻 and/or prophets of the old World to grow in our children. 🎸🎶🍄💞🎷🌅🌹🎹🌈🥁🎵🐢
Jerry Garcia from 71-75 was just unreal. I feel like Jerry is pouring out that light within his soul . No expectations , no dead song requests . This is Jerry at his most free , it's absolutely insane what he is playing here.
The early 70s is the greatest music ever . Jerry Garcia band and Funkadelic creating the most important music ever played. Funkadelic is very important and Eddie hazel definitely had an impact on Jerry .
I had a 60’s/70’s Sexy Soul radio show when I was in college. I have a chance to do another one on a local radio station. If everything pans out this song is definitely going on rotation!
Just a wonderful memory of Jerry and the band chilling out to Detroit soul and top 40 grooves... lovely Jerry Garcia Band shows, blessings 🤓❤️🌹‼️🌈🙌🎶⚡️⚡️
What a band, covered many artists. By time they were done the songs were their own. The band has been reformed in the after life and hope when the time comes I can be with them.
I'm so glad you said that. I've always thought that is the singles sexiest/silkiest "drop in" jerry every played. That tone is my favorite ever ever heard too. Then he hits that random high note and I'm in my happy place...
And they say Moses parting the Red Sea was a miracle Now, let’s face it, that is miraculous. But Jerry Garcia parting the universe by blazing the most without a net crushing mind bending jams and surrounding those jams with a blanket of miraculous iconic beatific ageless compositions , and with that energy moving through us and the band creates an omnipresent force, creating a grist for the mill as they say, connecting each other, ourselves with the planet and finding the most beautiful parts within ourselves All under the guise of live music. Well children I’d say that’s a miracle too . The true master connects us to love. And if we are lucky , to live that love by shining it on others. Jerry Garcia Forever GOAT {🥕🐇}:=} The Rabbit man
Beautifully done, a masterpiece indeed... A great duo those two were. Cat on flutes, or was that synthetic from Merl, as i was writting the phone sounding part, im like is this real or could it be the duo?? sick job... ✌
@@bobweird2399 I agree with dustin taylor. I'm a drummer. That means nothing really, but damn BOB. He is the the BEAT. That man has held it down for so long. I really like the sans Micky days.
The whole middle part is so fucking smooth and beautiful. Whole second half is sadly ruined by Martin Fierro's weird flute experimentation but it's a great version nonetheless.

then someone dial the phone, then I: wtf
The man surrounded himself with great musicians and just simply grooved. Amazing
Huh? Otherwise, absolutely. This is the 1st time I've heard a compete musical idiot in his mix
I always liked when he stood on business and said rap is not music, it’s rhythmic rhyming and it’s its own thing, separate from music which has melody and harmonics
We need more flute and cowbell. Jerry is so darn groovy he gives me eargasms.
Rock musicians had more respect for jazz and blues back then. It showed.

Agreed. But I need more '79 Reconstruction.
veneta72 -- Nice summation......

Haven't heard this before - blown away once more by the talent of Jerry, such feeling

Let’s not forget this magnificent bass line either. Such musical craftsmanship with anything GD and JGB/other affiliated acts
The man John Kahn!!!
That R2-D2 part had me transcending into another dimension
I'm so happy I found this
oh my fuck this is the silkiest of grooves
Just a wonderful memory of Jerry and the band chilling out to Detroit soul and top 40 grooves... lovely Jerry Garcia Band shows, blessings 🤓❤️🌹‼️🌈🙌🎶⚡️⚡️
This is just as smooth as silk.
Wonderful~smilin' and dancin' into the kaleidoscope time tunnel once again, TY Jerry & Merl!
Jerry and Merl jammin how true !!
I knew this was on Merl's solo album in 74 but I haven't heard it with Jerry thanks! Now I can jam along!✌
gives me constant chills. ❤
What a band, covered many artists. By time they were done the songs were their own. The band has been reformed in the after life and hope when the time comes I can be with them.
The lick where Jerry rolls in off the rhythm section at 3:24 is pure fucking silk.
I'm so glad you said that. I've always thought that is the singles sexiest/silkiest "drop in" jerry every played. That tone is my favorite ever ever heard too. Then he hits that random high note and I'm in my happy place...
and from 5:00-5:15.... name one individual who can do that -- let alone on an improvisational level
there is nothing like this.. ❤
Magical!
And thank you Merl, Jerry & the gang.
the flute was Martin Fiero. Legion of Mary
And they say Moses parting the Red Sea was a miracle

Ain’t no woman like I’ve had, have and going to get.

the famed recorder from 4th grade !!

Stuff like this is probably why aliens don’t vaporize us all. Our species does have its redeeming qualities.
“Show me what you’ve got!”
another GEM
Unreal! Wowww
Man this one just fuckin moves me!!
When the flute starts messing up at 9:47 makes me laugh my ass off every time🤣🤣
Messing up? That’s just his own version of “space”!
This tune is an epic improv work, but that flute in some spots is just like WTF.
The flute solo turns into someone trying to use their modem.
lol...I was expecting to hear "you've got mail!"
luv that
Love
This shit slaps ⚡️
10:28 r2d2 joins in
shit got cosmic
Beautifully done, a masterpiece indeed... A great duo those two were. Cat on flutes, or was that synthetic from Merl, as i was writting the phone sounding part, im like is this real or could it be the duo?? sick job... ✌
fiero on flute, I believe. played sax in Legion of Mary too
I think you’re right. It was part flute, part synth.
aint no guitarist (like the jerry we had)
Kruetzmann is the TRUTH.
Nick Ducati one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Long live the rhythm devil!
Most definitely, one of my favorite eras of GD is fall 73 without Mickey Hart... Mickey just messes the vibe up alot
Ehh...pretty sure that's Bill Vitt on the drums.
@@bobweird2399 I agree with dustin taylor. I'm a drummer. That means nothing really, but damn BOB. He is the the BEAT. That man has held it down for so long. I really like the sans Micky days.
@@bobweird2399 It's Kreutzmann. Click the link in the description and they have the lineup listed.
Great song by Jerry Garcia, This goes out too Tracy/05/10/2021/
I Love my woman!
Wow
Oh yes
Kofi, man, do I miss Kofi Burbridge when I hear this flute mess...imagine Jerry looking over at Kofi, like Derek used to do...💔💔
Time Crisis brought me here XD
smoooooth
Bliss
Jerry Garcia is babe
did this ever get pressed to vinyl?
The whole middle part is so fucking smooth and beautiful. Whole second half is sadly ruined by Martin Fierro's weird flute experimentation but it's a great version nonetheless.
Jerry had to be given Fierro the stink eye during that little sequence..
Enjoying it until......9:38 lol wtf
bursted out laughing when it hit hahahahahahaha
@@squishybuffalo someone was trrriiippppeeennnnnn
Aiko Aiko
I hate to tell everyone this and ruin the song but this song is about my woman
ruclips.net/p/PLOSKHHQKHtm7XwoEiMB8V2QWaQWydsUhS - This version selected for our JGB playlist
The section around 10:00
great groove, but the 6th grade recorder sound is killing me.
whos playing the flute?
Martin Fierro.
another great! RIP
That flute player is destroying the song
I dislike the sounds at around 10:30, doesn't fit in well.
Haha this made me chuckle!
phone sounds around 10 minute mark sound like a kindergartener messing around for the first time messing up Jerry's solo...wtf is going on here?
smoking hot
funk is whats happening
kills it for me
True this must be a mess up that is noway meant to sound good my guess mic volume mess up..? Could be anything but not sound good 😊
RogueTalent541 that is what you call " compete awesomeness" enjoy
That would be flute feedback and reverb. :-)
I will pay to have the flute sound removed.....
729pjp I love the flute so much in this
reminds me of a Curlew bird! hahahahahaha
It could probably be done and the world would be a better place for it.
great guitaring
but flute is
irritating.
slurpy
The ending of this song with the flute is SOOOOO annoying. Can I get a Amen!!!!
