Mentufacturer is back, with THE sound of the summer.
The sound of Mentufacturer's summer, that is.
In fact this short EP kind of came out of nowhere. (Disrupting all my other work in progress and planned releases). The title track is a quick sketch I knocked up in half an hour one night. But I just can't stop listening to it.
It's light, summery fun. Chilled, lazy and sensuous. Perfect to bump out of the car on a warm evening.
But it's also very much Mentufacturer. The harsh synth playing the arpeggiated chords was made in Pure Data. The chords themselves in GoldenPond Python library. The LFO controlling the filter cutoff that reduces the chords to nothing, is completely out of sync. with the chords themselves. The melodic synth-line is both gorgeous and slapdash. And by the time the clanking out-of-tune bells come in half-way through, the piece has become polymetrically perverse. With different intersecting grooves phasing in and out of sync with each other.
This is what has captured me and keeps me coming back to listen to this track. It is still so noisy and grotesque. And yet also a mellow summer vibe. Somehow at the same time.
That's exactly what Mentufacturer should be about so I felt it deserved more than a Zed Session. It needed to be an official single.
The "B-Side" second track, built around the same chord progression, is another play with some of Laurie Webb's FL Studio vocal samples. Somehow her "Hey!" reminded me of Kurt Cobain's which was amusing enough. It's all silly but a fun groove.
The final track is an ambient jam from a couple of years ago that was well liked on SoundCloud. It fitted the EP, so I've remixed it, given it a name and added it here.
