Am happy for you, Darrel, and that you had a great "sci-fi" year. Hopefully, the upcoming one will be even better and not only in this one particular regard. ❤
Good stuff - I’ve just found your channel. And I’ve found a fellow Captain Janeway fan! And more importantly the Culture and the Prestige. My 2024 SF stand-outs in terms of reading for the first time: The Vorkosigan series as a whole (started in 2023, finished in 2024) Gateway Last and First Men 40,000 in Gehenna Oryx and Crake The Sparrow
I’m not even a videogame fan but I found the first season of Fallout to be very well done. Walton Goggins needs to buy another hat to make room for more feathers.
I did the War of the Worlds interactive experience in London a few months ago - would wholeheartedly endorse your recommendation here. Great fun, and very memorable!
My favourite sci-fi thing of the year was a video game Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War. I grabbed vanilla game last summer when it was for free on Steam. Installed & played it in November, then on Black Friday sale I grabbed a bunch of DLC for ~50 €. Good 4X game with excellent WH40k aesthetics & lore. Although relatively narrow selection of military forces is a bummer, though mods rectify it.
I'm pleased that you mentioned The War of the Worlds show. I thought it was amazing. It was close to the book and impressive in it's scale. It involves the audience in a way I've never experienced before. I'm currently discoving your channel and enjoying it, very close to my own views. Thanks for your efforts!
Delighted to discover “Blake’s 7” getting a mention. I too was excited by the Blu-Ray collection, which I recently finished revisiting. I’m actually currently reading the “Blake’s 7 Production Diary Series A” from Cult Edge, which is well worth a look if you haven’t already. Your own book was largely inspired by the fabulous Servalan?! 😱🤗😍 What an astonishingly fabulous character, and an iconic spaceship design.
It’s been a good year for sci fi. Dune, Silo, Fallout, 3 Body Problem and more. I did see Nosferatu yesterday which was really good. Highly recommended. And I’ve been catching up on books that I’ve missed in the past. Starting with the Expanse before moving to Iain Banks.
It’s been a pretty decent year for sci fi! Dune part 2 was a highlight for me too. I also enjoy Peter F Hamilton’s books, amazingly detailed world building, I’m looking forward to reading Exodus!
Scavenger’s Reign is the best series of 2024 (tied with Blue Eye Samurai). I’ve never seen a planet designed to kill you and simultaneously have a calming atmosphere of peace.
Great list, as always! My favorite sci-fi of the year would be 3 Body Problem. Book 1 was ok with flat characters and way too many ideas but the subsequent books were mind blowing.
Thanks for this! Looking forward to picking some of these up, the Dune movies for one thing are still in my to-watch list. As for my SciFi year, I finally got around reading MA Foster's "Transformer" series as well as re-reading "Waves", they rank among the 80's very best IMO. On to 2025!
Every year is a good year for Science Fiction. 😃 This year Dune part two was my favourite movie, by far. I saw Fallout and enjoyed it a lot. I need to play the games, as i missed so many Easter eggs. Main effort for me has been on listening to the Iain M. Banks books, which i finished this year and it was bloody brilliant. I'm also re-reading Dan Abnett's Gaunts Ghosts series. This is my third read through and i'm having a blast. I also picked up a stunning piece of original art for my Millennium Falcon collection. Not much in the way of games. I've just started playing Barman: Arkham Asylum, which is showing a lot of promise. I also have The Culture: Drawings book. Wasn't there also a second volume promised for "Notes from the Culture"?
Top for me was the gifts Santa brought. The original FREEDOM OVA series, an amazing book by publisher VICTIONARY called FUTURIA Art of the Sci-Fi Age, the re-release of long out of print Timecrimes from visionary director Nacho Vigalondo, and the GITS The Human Algorithm manga. Santa knows his Sci-Fi
Good video with the great bonus of a few things I'd missed. Agree that Voyager is Epic Star Trek: the wide open universe of the original, but with good effects and decent acting. Villeneuve's Dune 2, with their new take on Chani they've have literally lost the plot for Messiah. Nope. Have a good New Year and keep writing those hits Kid.
For me, the high point was reading "The Last Cuentista" by Donna Barba Higuera, which came out of nowhere to become the best book that I read this year. It wasn't just that it was an interesting and unique perspective on the rise of authoritarianism in governments and how they can only succeed by erasing what makes people creative and unique as individuals, but that the way the story is written has a lot of personality, spunk, and heart. The protagonist is going to remain one of my favorite sci fi characters for a lot of years. This was the first time that I finished a book and immediately ran down the stairs to post a comment thanking the BookTuber who recommended it. Hopefully, it won't be the last. :)
Thanks for the recommendations. I just statged Archimedes Engine so its good to know it’s worth reading. I dom’t think the game is out yet so maybe it will be worth playing. ian M Banks is one of my all time favorites but I never hears of the Drawings and I am going to look for that.
Hamilton's novel is not expected to arrive in Australia until next year. Scavengers Reign is only available on small streaming services here. Dune was good. I read A Fire Upon the Deep on your suggestion and it did a good job of occupying my holiday. Terrific. I just read Old Man's War and formed the opinion that humans of the 21st century could definitely defend Earth. Sorry but that lead character in your novel got to me by the end, not in a good way. Keep writing. That's why I like Star Trek, it portrays a positive future. I have only been watching ST for a year or so but Voyager and Enterprise are my favourites. The captain and T'pol also develop over time like Janeway and Seven of Nine. I just visited a large English-speaking city for the first time in 5 years and bought 11 science fiction novels. Thanks for the video.
So you were intrigued by Servalans complexity. Yeah, right. No fooling me, Darrel. Seven of Nine, compelling. That’s a way to describe her, l guess. Sorry Darrel, just teasing you a little.
Exodus has yet to come out. In fact it would be more accurate to say that the game is based in Hamilton's book, as the developers just have him some very vague guidelines and he just did his thing and wrote whatever he wanted.
Dislike for the ending, Culture series is crappy. Gone through the first 4 books and only palyer of games has an interesting and memorable story. The rest are generic sci-fi. I'm sorry but after 3 duds and a good (not great) I can't be bothered to waste any more time on it. Maybe they pick up in the last 4 books but I'll never know cause nobody would double down on such an awful streak
Wonderful stuff. TY. Let's see; Dune Prophecy I loved - very Duney, Fallout was good fun, and I'm currently catching up with Dr. Stone - GOOO! Science!! 🚀🛸🪐🌀

Thanks for the tip about The Culture: The Drawings, ordered right away. Love the Culture, the novels and the late Banks.

Awesome! Enjoy Banks. I’m seeing Nosferatu New Years Day. I have high hopes!

Great video. Thanks. 🎉❤
It’s Janeway or the highway… 😊
🤣
Voyager and Janeway forever, although have just begun watching Enterprise and T'Pol is interesting.
💖
I didn't know Blake, was it ever broadcast to France ? (that's where I'm from). Visuals recall me of the OG Battlestar Galactica
Blake's 7 is about one year older than OG BSG.
Star Trek game proved story is more important than graphics. Highly recommended. Cheers

"Hamilton's novel is not expected to arrive in Australia until next year"
Wow! Australia must be very, VERY far away! :D
Check the graphic novel Frontier by Singelin

"I didn't play the game" - Well, to be fair, the game hasn't even been made yet. So no one has played it yet. In our timeline anyway.
What!? No Dune Prophecy? 😮 Best new show imho
Afraid not. I have some thoughts on it. Video coming soon.
@@Sci-FiOdyssey The greatest TV/streaming show ever made; no doubt! :)
1:47 that's probably because it's not been released yet.
Noice...all together, very noice
How did everyone love archimedes engine? I have such a hard time with it. :( i want to love it but I just can’t.
Well, at least you are unique. Isn't that a positive thing in the end? :)
@@daxbashir6232 what surprisingly positive attitude to have, love it!! Thank you for that!!
