It had to be that way. On some level they know that Ashile Sun had limited options, he could either kill the governor and spare the city or spare the governor and sack the city, Gongsun knew this as well which is why he offered the former. It is a sad state of affairs when Generals from different nations, who have immense respect for each other and in other circumstances would have been friends have to slaughter each other for the sake of the ego's of their monarchs. Ashile Sun knows their pride as soldiers and love of their general can't be so easily forgotten though, and he faces them head on to show respect for their feelings.
It's so wholesome to see these two sisters. Protecting and loving each other. Even after so much happened they didn't turn against each other. Such a beautiful bond.
