I wish me and my husband could work the homestead together everyday. But allas he works 60 hours a week and it's me with the 3 kids mon -fri tending the garden and animals. It's very exhuasting but I'm also happier than I've ever been. Producing our own food.
Hoops and row cover to deter cats in garden. Homesteaders used to keep the pumpkins in the hay loft or attic with the onions and garlic. Here in Kansas farmers are only a few generations from the original settlers, my grandparents still carried water to the house by hand.
You were talking about how to keep the cats out of your garden, I wanted to pass this on. I don't garden on the scale you do but I stuck the handle of cheap plastic forks around in my garden among new seedlings to keep cats from using it for a litter bed! once the plants were large it wasn't an issue. I'm sure if you had sticks they would work also. My raised beds looked crazy for awhile with white forks sticking up everywhere but it worked! I didn't even have cats! The neighborhood cats thought it was a giant litter box : (

Cats here citrus, put peels from any citrus fruit in the garden. Keeps the neighbor cats out of mine.
