I commented this elsewhere but I'll put it here too so people are informed. I'm not a dentist, but I had extractions 8 years ago and have researched a lot into this topic so here's my two cents. If you're seeing this and scared, please relax a bit. If your dentist is half competent and pulled your teeth for braces, it's unlikely that you're going to look like a freak in a couple years with horrible consequences from pulling some teeth. They take all those x-rays and study them extensively to decide what kind of treatment you need for a reason. That said, negative consequences CAN happen. If you're younger than 16 discuss palate expanders with your ortho, since your bones are still pliable and your arches can be widened to fix protrusion and overbite. If you're older than 16, your bones are less pliable BUT palate expanders are still an option although it may be less effective without surgery also. Good news is that you're pretty much done growing facially, so you're less likely (key words: less likely) to experience upper airway problems and unaesthetic facial bone reshaping from extractions. Still, ALWAYS get a second opinion and ALWAYS discuss palatal expansion before getting extractions. If your teeth are really big perhaps you can consider shaving some of them down to make space to pull back the others. Extractions ARE a last resort method. Palate expanders widen narrow arches. If you have narrow arches, you probably have or will get sleep apnea/upper airway problems anyway because your palate bulges more into your nasal cavity and therefore makes it harder to breathe through your nose. The way you tell if you have a narrow arch is to measure intermolar width, which can be hard if you're at home. An alternative but more approximated method is to smile with your teeth showing in your mirror. How many upper teeth can you see from the front? If it's six or less, you probably have a narrow palate. Another good test on whether you may find a palate expander useful is to tilt your head back and take a photo of your upper arch with your phone. Is it more "V" shaped and boxy? You could probably use some palate expansion! Is it more "U" shaped and rounded? Your palate is probably as wide as it can get without causing other problems! Is it a mix? You could probably fly by with expansion or extractions and be just fine. Sometimes palate expansion is contraindicated regardless of arch shape, so you'll have to talk to your dentist. You can google studies in which extractions were done on one twin while the other twin had braces without extractions. If you think for more than five seconds, you can probably see the problem in that study and why it's... kind of dumb. If one twin doesn't need extractions, the other one doesn't either. They're twins. The extractions were done for no reason, of course it's gonna cause problems. Another thing is orthotropics and "Dr Mew" or whatever. It is true: better tongue posture leads to better facial aesthetics because it helps with upwards growth of the midface, widens dental arches (preventing upper airway/breathing problems), and prevents recessed chins (AKA the mouth breather face). But up to a point. Ideally, you'll always have good tongue posture no matter what age, but if you're 16+ years of age mewing all the time versus orthodontics probably isn't going to do a whole lot for the reason I mentioned above. Bones become less pliable as you age. People who proponents for mewing and are against orthodontics will show you someone with a busted up side profile and say "this is what happens from braces/extractions/elastics" even though it's not true at all. Extractions can cause dishing of the side profile but only if they're done unnecessarily and even then it's not going to give you a side profile of someone with bad posture who's been mouth breathing their entire life. There's a lot of fear mongering on this topic, some for good reason. Some for not. Let's be level-headed here and reason that extractions are kind of an outdated method but for some people can be the only treatment they have. They can be done well. Those who've had extractions and experienced detrimental effects are a vocal minority. Many people who get extractions like this barely notice any problems.

The treatment flared all my front teeth out, they looked horrendous. I've since had all four premolars extracted at a proper orthodontist and metal braces fitted. My back teeth will be brought forward and front teeth pushed back to close the gaps 👍
for more info i think it also depends on your case. I had upper and lower extractions to fix a severe open bite and it completely solved my painful TMD issues - I couldn't eat without strain/even headaches and got rid of lip strain and greatly improved my profile and face. My lips also appear fuller as they were relaxed. I did get palate expansion as part of the treatment also. It was an unbelievably positive transformation. Again, it was a very difficult case, my bite was as a result of a physical accident- I was under a large dental hospital and had a team of four orthodontics , open bites are already rare also.
@@johnnyjoestar7143 I haven't had palate expansion, I've been told by my orthodontist that the brace wire will spread and align my teeth, giving me a wide smile, the final 6 months will be finishing and detailing each tooth and aligning them perfectly.

@@TheJustImpolite Wider face is better and much more attractive. Extractions are horrible, as someone who had 2 teeth pulled. These teeth are there FOR A REASON. I had Invisalign at a regular dentist without extractions, they said I didn't need them, my teeth were all tilted outwards to make room and fit them all in.

@@Interstellar_911You are the one that is dumb here. OP is actually asking a logical question. Extractions make the jaws smaller leading to less space for the tongue to rest on the palate

Yes
Mine took 7 years. In hindsight I wonder why tf did I not change my dentist!
You prolly were not wearing your elastics
Should have used a palate expander instead
Edit: I sort of changed my mind about this sorry y’all. Sometimes premolar extractions can work (in the case of bimaxillary protusion for example).
palate expander expands ur chin and cheeks which makes ur face slighty wider !since the arch expands ! ! please read about it online ! extractions r much better option for protrusion! if ^_^ unless u want ur face to look wider and have wider smile then choose palate expander !
@@TheJustImpolite is this true please help I have a large overjet but worried about retraction
@@TheJustImpolite Wider face is better and much more attractive. Extractions are horrible, as someone who had 2 teeth pulled. These teeth are there FOR A REASON. Pulling your jaw backwards makes the face ugly and makes the mouth smaller, you'll have less space for your airway and your tongue, and you will potentially become a mouth breather. Extraction of healthy teeth should never occur.
@@attilak6561 only do retraction after expansion (M.S.E. for example). making the mouth smaller is damaging, read my comment above

alright guys ima be honest
if u have a SEVERE case like me, your facial structure is gonna be enhanced and your profile's gonna be even better
but if you have a simple case and your dentist want to extract your premolars to fasten the process, your facial structure may be worse, and your jaw is gonna be pushed back.
