- Jeff & Sarah visit the filming site for one of the most endearing special episodes of "Little House on the Prairie" shot 46 years ago! Michael Landon used the spectacular Donnell Vista east of Sonora in 1974 as the place for the fictional Jonathan's Mountain with Ernest Borgnine.

I absolutely loved the Little House TV series. I sort of knew the filming was done someplace in California, but to my young imagination, it was always the middle west. Thank you both for filming such beautiful vistas and for paying tribute to a a beloved TV series.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it!
Instill watch it. It's a comfort show to me.
That location is on the 108 hwy not the 120
@Phil M Exactly !!!!!
@@jbenziggy that Vista is on the 108 hyw not the 120 it's the Sonora pass hyw
Wow! What memories that brings back, As a kid, I was on several times as a an extra back then, feel old now though....😄👍
G.j
Wow really thats so cool
What episodes and character did you play?? I know them all .. Your so lucky
Wow Robert that had be highlight of ur life I just Love Michael Landon Awesome Human Being Actor all around Awesome 👏
A great visit back to a magical time from the past. Thanks Jeff and Sarah.
Sweet comment, thanks! Yep that was a magical era for me too.
Thanks for giving a bit of a glimpse of history!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Jeff and Sarah. Excellent again....
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks very much!
The rugged beauty of the area is simply awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!!! It really was a beautiful day for our visit too!
Thank you for bringing back the greatest memories of my mother and I just setting and never missing an episode of Little House on the Prairie.
Our pleasure, Arnold! Thanks for watching!
History Hunters can’t wait for your stories I could watch 24/7.
Loved all the shows w Michael Landon! Little house and highway to heaven brings back memories!
Thanks for reminding me of those good old days as a kid 😊
Love your dedication to telling the TV and Movie star tales of my era...
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it!
Again, what a treat to see a new video from you and Sarah. My wife and I just got through watching all of the LHOTP episodes and vividly remember this one. Often, like this episode, it leaves you with a tear in your eye. Thanks a bunch.......Russell D.
aaahhh Jeff! This brings back so many memories. I have been to Donnell's Vista many, many times. While this filming was going on my father, brother and I were building a house on Old Strawberry Road near Pinecrest Lake. We were completely oblivious of the fact that the Vista was being used as a film location. Thank you so much Jeff and Sarah! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! I too was surprised to know that Landon was back up there in 1986, two years after I saw him in La Grange and at Copperopolis! I would have loved to catch him once again for the last time! Thanks so much for sharing!
I sure do miss Michael Landon and his heartfelt shows. In the picture of you and Michael Landon you look like you could be his son. Thanks for sharing!
He was one of a kind! An amazing man who contributed so much to millions of lives. I don’t think I looked like him but I appreciate you saying that because he was a handsome man.
This video popped up today after I watched your Forest Lawn video and remembered seeing it when it first came out. I worked with a man from the telephone company in Sonora. He has a cabin up in Kennedy Meadows and one time he and his wife went fishing, hiked over a rise, and there before them was a scene being shot of Little House on the Prarie. He said Michael Landon was directing and chain-smoking behind the camera. Another guy I worked with in Sonora said the crew and actors used to stay at the Sonora Inn in downtown Sonora and the kids would walk along Washington Street in the evening. I had my retirement dinner in 2008 at the same Sonora Inn. Another excellent, interesting video!
Once again Jeff and Sarah, you have filmed a location that brings back memories of my younger days of family and fun in these areas. From Modesto, to Sonora, Columbia, and on, if I could tell you my history with these areas, nice job! Your timing was great on the filming, no smoke, very blue sky!
It was a beautiful day last month. I haven't seen blue skies since with all the smoke! Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it!
Great job. Loved this one as we watched Little House alot. Our children grew up watching it.
Wow, creator on the rise. That's awesome! I'm envious. Your channel is growing super fast. You'll be at 100K before you know it. I've been working on my own Little House On The Prairie vlog, so it was especially fun to see yours. Amazing details, as always, and how cool that you actually got to meet Landon and French! Nice job Jeff and Sarah!!
Steve, such praise from you is a true compliment! Thanks! I really enjoyed shooting and editing this one. There are a ton of Little House fans all over the world and interest should be high! Yes, I spent hours watching Landon and French and in a lull in filming had a chance to speak one-on-one with Victor. He could be standoffish to people but he opened up and showed his humor with me. When they both got cancer and died I was crushed. I felt like they were friends. Landon was always up in our part of California shooting scenes for all of his TV shows, including Bonanza, LHTP and Highway to Heaven! Thanks for the great comment ... I always watch your shows too.
Beautiful site to visit and take in the beauty of the N. Cal. forests and mountains. Thanks for going there and the Little House history lesson. Good series, all those folks are either passed or old now, just like me.
I think that it's depressing to see how the area is a ghost of its former self.
What an absolutely beautiful place. Loved that show when I a kid growing up in the uk. Great picture you took with Michael Landon Jeff. Loved this video I think you sold me on taking the wife and kids out to California for the Christmas and new year lol God willing. Thanks so much for putting the time in to bring us these great videos.
Wow all that sounds brilliant Phil thanks so much for all that information definitely interested in seeing them places. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it! California is a better place to visit in the spring and summer. The mountains can be socked in with snow in the winter.
@@jbenziggy yes I never thought how far north those places are Jeff I'm more used to southern California in the winter lol.
Thanks again.
Thank you Jeff and Sarah for enlightening and entertaining us, so much that we would never see or even know of.
Central California watching
Thanks for watching and for the compliments! We appreciate it!
Yup, I remember those days well. Living in Sonora, it wasn't uncommon to see Michael Landon in town. He was kind of a fixture there. Some of Bonanza was filmed there. Later he used the area as location for Highway to heaven. He was a wonderful and friendly man. When I was in high school drama, someone would always sell him a ticket to our plays. We were always on edge, "will he come?" LOL. No. But it was sweet of him to buy the ticket.
I have been to Donnell Vista two times. I had no idea Little House on the Prairie was filmed there. I like Sarah’s little parts in your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Good video. Of all 3 Michael Landon shows, my favorite was "Highway to Heaven" with his buddy, French. I did visit Michael Landon's burial site at Hillside Cemetery in Culver City, CA. RIP.
Great video Jeff, really enjoyed it. Great to see the behind the scenes photos.what was it like to meet Michael Landon, my favorite TV actor.
What a lovely, peaceful place.
It really is! Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it!
Beautiful Episode. These are exactly the Videos of you Guys, that i like the most. Revisiting these old Movie and TV Series Locations. Great Nostalgia :)
Gorgeous views! I loved watching Little House. My sister is obsessed with the show. She had bonnets like they wore on the show.
Thank you Mr,Jeff for this beautiful video,I grew up with little house,it's very emotional, best regards magid
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate it!
Your channel is such a nice discovery! Thank you.
Always interesting as always but can’t get over that place it’s so beautiful
Thank you Jeff and Sarah for bringing back old memories of a great family show. You always do such a good job. My other favorite show of that time area was the Waltons. Thanks
She was such a great little actress!!
I'm very much enjoying all your videos. Great work!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much for letting us know!!!
More Little House please! I love these. This show always had the most beautiful locations.
Great episode, stay safe with all the fires and pandemic.⭐️
Jeff, the research that you do for each episode of History Hunters is incredible. Thank you.
Thanks very much Gary. It’s a labor of love!
Thanks Jeff and Sarah that show was so instrumental for me to watch as I grew up and as I matured as an adult, Ernest Bs lines about God making His choices are so poignant for all our lives if we choose to see ...I love the fact everything Micheal Landon was apart of had great life lessons in it. Sad his STAR is no longer burning but to see LHOTP in reruns is a fantastic tribute to his body of work.
Thanks! Yes Landon produced shows with messages we can all learn from! Very decent man which we need to find a replacement for. But I don’t think he can be replaced.
Great memories of my childhood. I adored this show, still do ❤️
Thank you beloved friends...
We need to thank you for watching!!! We enjoy hearing from good folks like you who enjoy our shows.
Thank you for this video.. I love watching people travelling to famous places I love 💕
Glad you enjoyed, Gaynor!
The park is beautiful and you did a great job matching the scenes from Little House! I'm watching from Florida, wish I was there! Stay safe and well, thank you! 🥵
Glad you enjoyed it, Marylou!
That park is the Stanislaus Forrest off the California hyw 108 also know as the Sonora pass hyw
The air looks great out there.
Good video! always asked me about the location of that beautiful place as it would be now!
it hurst that in my appreciation it looks a bit deforested today!
Thank you very good job!!
It is a beautiful place! Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate your comments!
Oh this might be one of my favorite episodes of your amazing and informative series.
That's so nice to hear! Thank you! I had a good feeling about the way this turned out and feel like lots of fans will be interested and drawn to it! Again, Cassy, thanks very much!
History Hunters so nice that I watched it twice.
This is so neat that u do this history of these shows
Another great investigative story. Thanks Jeff and Sarah. Ernest Borgnine...one of the greatest actors of our era.
I remember Ernest in McHale's Navy. They say he was a true gem of a human being! Thanks so much for coming along with us!
@Phil M 'is a pretty good place to l on y7yc and the fact in juju 7 7
I dont live too far from Laura Ingalls Wilder lived when she wrote the Little House books , Mansfield MO
Been there! You have a very pretty little park downtown.
was she living with her daughter when she wrote the little house series?
I'm from St Louis and spent a weekend in your area. We stayed in a charming B&B which I believe had been owned by a good friend of Laura's. Hadn't thought of that trip for years, but your comment certainly brought back a fond memory. I'd read all the Little House books as a child before the tv series was made, so Laura was close to my heart. Really enjoyed our visit and the historical connection to someone I consider an American treasure.
@@giantbryan7896 I heard a rumor her daughter actually wrote the books.
😷 good job, it was a much watch with my kids , thank you
Glad you enjoyed it with your chil'un!!!
History Hunters ...👍👍👍 good stuff
Great vlog Jeff. Beautiful area.
Thanks 👍 Thanks for watching and for the compliments! We appreciate it!
My daughter and I watch Little House series every sat or sun morning together.
My children and I watched as well! Thanks!
Very cool video... Classic TV Show. Nice work finding that exact spot w the boulder. It’s no easy business haha. I also enjoy the activity.
Thanks very much! It was frustrating not finding the prayer rock!
History Hunters Better luck next time!
The late great EB told me in a letter many years ago that his fave actor was Sir Cedric Hardwicke !!!!
We're having fires in Oregon but there's a covered bridge up towards Marcola where they film the Civil War classic movie, where they hid up inside the rafters
My parents watch them film it in the early 60s
Great episode! Where was their town of Walnut Grove shot at? I remember Little House on the Prairie. I would have been 4 when it first aired. But I remember the later episodes. Great job of hunting down those locations.👍😃
Big Sky Movie Ranch. It's in Simi Valley California. You can Google Earth it and see the area. All the sets are gone and overgrown. It's on private property.
Most of the show was filmed at the Paramount Ranch after that. There were many shows and movies filmed there. In the early 80’s we were teenagers and yes. We used to sneak onto a lot of the old sets. Always with respect. Not vandals and no spray cans. We left them as we found them. It was surreal climbing the same stairs up to the helipad landing zone on MASH. Side note: Munsters go Home was filmed on the racetrack there.
Thank you very much for this great video and greetings from Germany
Awesome,I don't remember baby brother either.but I'm old...lol great video
Thanks for watching, Wade! If it makes you feel any better we're all getting old. LOL
I JUST watched this episode last night ❤
I use to watch little house on the prairie re runs with my grandpa in the early to mid 90z lol I lived with him he was on his 80z an I was a young kid 12 years old I didn't like the how back then but now I watch it just to bring back this memories
Another outstanding video, I always enjoy!👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I will never get tired of watching my show love
Also I have never seen the bonanza episode that deals with hoss dieing!!!! Thank you I will look for that episode!!!
this was cool seeing where the little house was filmed like watching this kind of stuff
Great! Glad to hear! Thanks for dropping by to watch! We hope you like us enough to subscribe!
I love watching your show I am big on history myself, and so sorry that you lost your mother last year I know the feeling your show is very knowledgeable my favorite hang out is Virginia city
Thanks very much, Patrick. I appreciate your sentiments and your compliments. We enjoy doing this!
You certainly lived up to your chapter's name, you "hunted" for hours for that "Prayer's rock". Very enjoyable episode.
This was my favourite episode with the wonderful Ernest Borgnine in the leading role. I don't think that Minnesota has mountains that high or such rugged scenery.
You're right, Minnesota does not have terrain like that! LOL. We appreciate you watching and commenting!
One of my favorite shows!!!
The Little House series is based on the books by the real life Laura Ingalls Wilder who was born in rural western Wisconsin (Pepin County) not far from the Mississippi River. The books are based on her life, almost like a diary.
I read the books and loved them. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, what a great video! I’m glad I found you. This is good stuff. I’m curious though; what camera and set up do you use? The footage was smooth and clean...
Great Episode
Great job friends.Hi from Greece!!!!
Hi from California! Glad to see we have fans in Greece! Thanks so much for watching our program!
Wellcome in Greece holidays. I am from Lamia .Central Greece. Nice weather and nice islands. Lihadonisia islands. It's cool place.
This show reminds me of The show The waltons who lived on walnut mountain hee hee😁.That was a great show with john boy and the decent family on the mountain.Another moral tv show that taught decentcy, morals and good behaviors. Both shows are great.Diferent strokes was too but it had one bad aspect the privilege of the rich.
We have a family cabin near there. And one year we were coming back and we saw 2 of the trailers for it!! And we were at Kennedy meadows and saw the big moutain where Laura walked up to the big mountain
That’s wonderful! When I was a kid we were driving south on Hwy. 99 near Turlock and I spotted the Little House film truck going northbound ... no doubt to the Sonora area. I was tickled pink!
Unfortunately fire has taken much of the beauty. They used the Jamestown Railroad also.
La vedo la rivedo continuamente sul canale italiano 27,non mi stanca maiiiii. Umanita',bellezza,sensibilita',amore....in questa amatissima serie. Un bacio❤❤❤❤❤❤ anna. Ge
Hello Jeff and Sarah. I just wanted to say thank you so much for doing this episode. I'm a fan of Little House on the Prairie. I want to take my family to Donnell Vista now. 😎 Any chance you know where the episode The Campout was filmed?
Glad you enjoyed it! I think the camp spot was at Iceberg Meadow or near the Clark Fork campground.
Great episode! Such a beautiful place. I like the before and now photos. I’m there with you. It’s funny how Sarah is not impressed. My wife is the same way. I talk to her about history even though I know she doesn’t want to hear it. It’s like I’m talking to myself. I bore my kids too. What do they know?
Unimpressed? Try camera shy and stumble for words. Thanks for watching.
Good,merci
It's a huge shame that we lost Michael Landon so early, he was one of my favorite actors. You would have never known that he liked the booze so much, the girls of this show have now come out and said that they drank 2 cases of beer per day on set and rough days were called "3 case-rs" with Landon also drinking vodka or whisky in his coffee. I know I didn't believe it either but then I read more than one of them have verified this, a pure shame.
Yeah before he died he said he drank too much and got too little sleep - probably a recipe for cancer. Who knows? Thank you for watching!!!
Very good job 🙏🏻💝
Thank you very much!!!
According to my DVD set.the last episode aired 1986 the year before I was born
I would love to sit on a rock there and pray. Contemplate life. So gorgeous.
History Hunter - EB is Ernest Borgnine [wakey wakey] !!!!
Sarah reminded me because I was confused about who EB was! Sorry about that. lol
@@jbenziggy It's OK chum - LHOTP was a great hit here in England too, it's repeated sometimes. Bonanza was a great hit too. Keep up great work !!!!
@@jbenziggy EB also sent me a signed photo with that letter. I was writing a book about Sir Cedric Hardwicke at time. It amazes me that such a quintessential Englishman starred in a famous cowboy film with John Wayne called TYCOON [1947].
@@jbenziggy ruclips.net/video/Sf6A8lHOujo/видео.html - are you aware of the disappearances at DV over the years ?
Your wife seems.........not happy???
Hopefully I'm wrong for your sake because you seem genuinely awesome...
Thanks for the video.
Was wondering was little house on the prairie was inspired by the book little house in the big woods
Little House On The Prairie show Love Lance lngalls Wilder Book 📚💖💖💖💖💖💖💖my favorite one fan Big Seasons DVD 📀 Dolls 💖💖🌻🎵
where did they keep the production trailers and everything needed to film on location in such a rural area?
There is a parking lot at that location so that's where it was all situated. They ran electrical cords from the trailers to the filming locations nearby!
Lauras baby brother died & then later in the series Laura had a baby boy & he died also.
She blamed & hated the Dr. & almost ran him out of town until she came to her senses.
They said the family was cursed because all their baby boys died.
I wonder what ever happen to that cross after this episode?
Good question! I bet somebody had it as a TV memento!
@@jbenziggy you are probably right. Just like the amulet that the Indian chief gave Laura in the very early pilot movie
Jeff, you look a little like
Patrick Duffy, the guy from the serie "Dallas".
Wish I had a dollar for every time somebody has said that! LOL. I don't see any resemblance myself but what the heck. Thanks for watching!
In the episode I thought I remember the baby choking on a popcorn Maybe I'm Wrong
anyone know where they shot the episode when Charles and Mary visited Chicago city in season 4?
Probably on a sound stage!
ILOVE THE LORD IS MY SHPPERED ON DVD
Beautiful country. Seems a tad odd of a place to film a show about a prairie family, though.
Exactly! Right? LOL
Actually, twins are useful due to the child labor laws. Kids can only work a few hours per day.
Brilliant episode, Ernest Borgnine was an amazing actor and human being. YT has a little doc series he made with his son behind the camera following him driving around USA in his beloved RV, the way he interacted with all the people he met on his travels showed how genuine and caring he was. Thanks for sharing this as I didn't realize he had worked on Little House but I shouldn't be surprised as he was a real journeyman actor despite being an Oscar winner.
When I was stationed at the Naval Base in Rota Spain, we used to walk to the base family center and watch Little House every Sunday for two hours. (We didn’t have a TV )
I have traveled around California for most of my life and somehow missed that incredible spot. I hope you enjoy making the episodes as much as I enjoy watching them.
Yes I do enjoy making them! I’m grateful that you enjoy watching them!
Just find the 108 highway and take it to Kennedy meadows , Michel landon filmed a lot of episodes of little house in the meadow I know as we saw him filming there . Also you can rent cabins from the hosts matt and Leslie bloom just go online , you want the Kennedy meadows on thev108 highway
It can be seen in the road above Sonora .. It stands out ..and is magnificent x
Very interesting. I watched a lot of Little House on the Prairie.
Me too! Thanks for liking our video!
You can watch all of it on peacock for free and the movies ad-free only get interrupted once in awhile to talk about peacock service. We just finished watching it on there it only took us nine months to watch it all lol
Absolutely loving your journeys! While they often make me homesick for our California home, I appreciate all your hard work! Thank you!
Thank you, Melinda, for commenting that you love our videos. We enjoy producing them and what are the payoffs is getting to hear how much people enjoy them. Thank you again.
That is a beautiful area. There has been at least three people missing from that same spot through the years (2005. 2014 and 2016) and have never been found. Their cars were found in the parking lot abandoned. The vista is featured in Missing 411 and as a former member of search and rescue I have also heard of people disappearing in that area. Absolutely nothing wrong with visiting there but not alone.
Could it have been suicide? There's a pretty big drop off.
