You can surely appreciate the pioneers and what they must have suffered through ...they must have been made of good stuff to hang onto their dream .....it often amazes me when seeing the old cabins in the bush and what they must have gone through to build this country without all the things we have available today..bugs are the only thing that puts a damper on the summer bush experience for me.....thanks again Shawn ...as usual excellent ...all the best!

I feel for you Shawn. I remember opening up our cabin in late May or early June, and between the heat, the long clothes, the mosquitos and especially those g** d*%& blackflies, it could be miserable. I actually preferred cold, wet, windy days. Insect repellent is literally a sanity saver. Happily the worst of it will be over in a week, or two at the most.

I have flown all over Canada, including up to Frobeshire Bay...it aways amazes me that these bug larva survive a Canadian harsh winter...especially last years recored cold winter. Mosquitoes are really a hardy off breeding species, able to survive basically in any environment on Planet Earth, from the tropics to the tundra regions. I’ll I can say is buy fly strips...they really do work.

Jerry Baker's home brew for a 20 gallon sprayer. Steep chewing tobacco (like sun tea) in an old sock. mixture-1 cup cheap yellow mouthwash-1 cup cheap yellow lemon scent dish soap along with 1 cup tobacco juice..if using a pump sprayer add water to make 20 gallons-spray on ground. Do this every 2 weeks..will not harm Cali...it is for insects & diseases. Hope this is helpful.

Hi Shawn, I hope you're better. I have several ideas that can help you. 1- ceramic mud, put a little in the water, a form that becomes a little thick layer on the skin and joints throughout the body. When you teak you put the clothes on. - A vapor steamer machine, in the bed, in the wood or mattress. - Bracelet for Calis against insects. - And maybe you can wear your too. - Anti-mosquito plugs, candles.
-Sauna and water basin to remove the mud ... and relax the body ... 2 weeks. Until the mosquitoes leave.
Jewish people in Brooklyn. Out door the hanger a transparent plastic back with water, Mosquitos doesn't go in.
Derty clothes in very hot water.
Hope this make you feeling much better at night and days.

Shawn, Oh yes! Bugs love me. I think I've got "Cafe" written all over me! We get midges (plenty) mosquitos (few) and horse flies. Not to mention ticks!! The big, but harmless swarms here on the Tweed are Mayflies. When they hatch it's just a blanket coming up off the river thick as fog! Hard not to swallow them going over the bridge as the wind blows them up and over like a breaker! Like you say short season. I use Life Systems Jungle Formula spray on my skin. Keeps most visitors off. Regards Stephen.

Hang up those bug zappers around your door and patio areas as well.

One good thing about living there is you can eat tons of Garlic that you can grow in your new garden and not worry about smelling. I tend to eat more Garlic around this time of the year just for a natural bug repellant and it seems to really help. I am also planning on storing fresh Garlic in jars of raw unfiltered organic honey from a local farm in whole clove form. I hear it stores very well and is a powerful mix for many health issues.

I was an outdoor educator and mountain guide in the Adirondack Mountains off and on for several years. I learned this trick from an old timer.
The best way to keep bugs away from your skin is to eat raw onions on a daily. Onions are acidic so when you sweat the ph of your sweat goes acidic due to the onions in your system.
You have to eat a large apple-sized onion a day for several days before your pores start sweating the onion. This really works!

    • @sandrakohlstedt8583

Hey Shaun, I remember black flies very well when I lived and Quebec as a young boy. We used to visit relatives up in the Laurentian Mountains North of Montreal and in June the black flies were terrible and I used to get bit all the time. We also would see a lot of June Bugs. Ugly little creatures that would crash into windows at night when lights were on inside the house. Don't know if you see many June Bugs where you are in Ontario. I'm surprised that you are not wearing a net over your head to keep those bugs out. Good Luck getting past the month of June. Cheers

And you say why I know this, i live in Southern Ontario where the mosquitoes are horrendous any time of day in the sun light it doesn't make a difference. Higher winds or cooler temperatures only make a difference, but if it just rained and it's hot they're brutal. It's definitely that time of year. I'm on the lake and we have June bugs (flying brown beetles) this time of year too. I have to use all natural repellents due to allergies. I eat more pickles and salads with vinegar based dressing as mosquitoes don't like it. As for topical eucalyptus oil and lemon. But nothing is 100% always have that rogue mosquito on some kind of kamikaze mission. I've heard lavender is a repellent but found it works more for scorpions than mosquitoes. Try thermacell products - I have been impressed with their effectiveness. I have an outdoor shop and I use a large electric fan that works great - obviously not an option for you. I also put a deep treated bandana around my neck and wear permethrin treated clothing. Here in Maine ticks are a major concern and I never go into the woods without “tick gaiters”. I get no ticks when I wear them. One of the benefits of bugs is that they actually limit development. Local realtors won’t even show property when the bugs are bad.

Shawn, hang in there! Texas and southern Oklahoma have the Mosquitoes and wasp's. It's a battle also this time of the year.

Last resort and the best solution is the bug jacket. I don't leave home without it. I try not to wear is though as they are not the most warm and fuzzy device. Tuck your pant legs under your socks, those buggers will chew your legs near clean off. A fun experiment I have been playing with this spring is birch oil, mixed with olive oil and coconut butter warmed and mixed, its not DEET but I find it a decent deterrent, you will sweat it off in short order this is where a bug jacket comes in handy. Enjoy those parts of the day early morning and windy like you say Shawn. Good info for sure. I also burn a smudge pot and or smoky fire when possible. How about those deer flies, moose flies, horse flies. the bigger buggers that come out in the heat of summer after the mosquitoes. Oh so looking forward to them.

My sister got a wide brim pale hat with the bug netting and she says it works well, since mosquitoes feast on her. They don't like me tho, so maybe 2 or 3 bites/year vs. her 2 or 3 bites/minute. Come to think of it, my best protection is to have her nearby :D I pay for it tho, because spiders like me. *shudder* In the barking-the-longhouse video, black flies were bouncing off the camera! And in this video we could almost see you through the mosquito swarm!

Yes, we are dealing with the same issue here in central VT....a very bad season from all the rain. Have to wear my bug suit when outdoors every time.

Shawn, thanks so much for the quick post on this topic. I know it's probably only coincidence that I asked for it in your last video, but hey, maybe it prompted the posting of this one?
Down in the USA Central East Coast area it's lighter colors clothes that attracts the Deer flies, Skeeters, and _no See-Ems,_ ot tiny mite size flying chiggers. If you wear a white tee-shirt, it'll be covered cream colored looking stains, that are the biting No See-Ems. Those are so small, you almost need a magnifying glass to see them.
