My thoughts exactly. As the books are pretty episodic with their storytelling so a TV series would have been a better angle to go. Do something similar like in Ed, Edd, N Eddy, where Greg tries to pull off another stunt to get popular, only for it to fail completely and he suffers for it. I also would give more freedom for the cast and crew as they don't need to worry about long delays.
The greg and his dad war reanactment scene felt like real history

A lot of the intense hate back when the movie came out was actually from older teens/kids who thought it was a massive downgrade from the books and og movies. 🤷

As a fellow Fregley and Chirag Stan, the fact that the Rodrick Rules remake and the Long Haul movie don't have these characters, who were narratively important to the story as Greg's nerdy, weird, but loyal friends that aided him in his misadventures, absolutely stings me. But honestly, I'll take that over those trash movies ruining their characters. Even though these two characters in particular of the main cast are hard to screw up in terms of characterization I know those movies could've found a way to do so. They did it with everyone else why not them?

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are so fucking good. Peak cinema. Long haul…. Not so much. The animated ones on Disney Plus are AWFUL. I gotta say the wimpy kids movies are the best trilogy. Side note, I absolutely hate that one girl who just randomly shows up in the first movie, I’ve always hated her as an actor i don’t even know why I just hate her in her entirety.

That was the worst burial job I've seen. Was bro digging up earth to throw _on top_ of the case instead of putting it _in_ the hole?
I think that what made the first three diary of a wimpy kid movies work and not the long haul one is that the first three movies were:
1) More loyal to the source material.
2) Actually made the movie for kids or DOAWK fans to enjoy, not just for parents.
The Long Haul felt more like a movie for the parents rather than the people who were supposed to be the target audience, in an annoying pandering sort of way rather than a "clever and mature humor" sort of way, if that makes sense. Most of the movie was just, "Kids these days and their obsession with technology, am I right?" They even changed the plot completely just so they can say to the adult watchers, "Yeah, kids these days love their tech. They're so weird! Oh look! Alicia Silverstone from Clueless is playing Wannabe by Spice Girls! Remember that song? How nostalgic!" They made the parents too rational while making the kids look like caricatures of kids from the 21st century with no actual personalities. In fact, none of the characters in the main cast had interesting personalities. There was no flavor. So the movie was boring.
With the first three movies, they weren't afraid to make Susan and Frank look crazy or annoying at times, like they tend to be in the books or how parents tend to be in real life, and while the child characters also acted bad or did dumb things too, they felt a little more realistic, instead of them feeling cartoonishly stupid. The humor was wackier but also more grounded, and the movies stayed (mostly) true to the plot, humor, and over all vibe of the books. It truly felt like the movies were made for the fans and that the director respected the book series, while The Long Haul felt like a cash grab meant to keep parents entertained while they watch with their kids, which is weird, because I don't think the humor in TLH is mature enough for the average adult to enjoy, while the jokes in the older movies are still funny to me as an adult, so it seems that they failed at creating a "relatable" comedy for parents anyway.
