My favorite song of all time from the Hag. I had this feeling once when I was laid off and money was really tight and times were hard. But we did get through
This song brought tears to my eyes. Merle Haggard's family was from Oklahoma just like mine and he was raised in California's San Joaquin Valley (Bakersfield). Same for me - grew up near Modesto. My folks loved his music and it was often playing in our house. My Dad especially liked "If We Make it Through December" and was always singing it. Bittersweet memories - my parents are gone now.
Happy New Year!! Thank you for all of your help this year!!! You really made a difference for me. THANK YOU!! By the way, did you know that Merle Haggard did a song with Clint Eastwood? It's called "Barroom Buddies" from the 70's baby!!
Merle Haggard, the original "Okie from Muskogee" (check that song out by Merle). Country music legend Merle Haggard died on April 6, 2016, at his home in the San Joaquin Valley, California, after a brief battle with pneumonia, so he did make it through December.. and moved to California. He died on his 79th birthday. The beloved country star recorded more than three dozen No. 1 hits in his musical career, which spanned six decades from the 1960s into the 2010s. Haggard actually predicted he would die on his birthday, according to his son, Ben Haggard. RIP Merle.
I worked for the postal service for 35 years. This was always my December theme song the entire time I worked there. It is still my favorite December song.
My favorite Merle Haggard song. It has special meaning for me and my dad. We finally got to see him live together, one of his last concerts, and Merle was AMAZING! One of the best nights of my life and a memory with my dad that I will always cherish.
I read once that when Johnny Cash recorded Folsom Prison Blues, Merle Haggard was in the audience as a prisoner, and that concert change his life. This my favorite Merle Haggard song.
Awwww...thank you! Every time you've done one of his songs, I've requested this one. Now if you want to hear a very spirited Merle, you have to do "Rainbow Stew!"
The Hag grew up 2 hours south of where I live . My Dad's favorite and he always makes me think of my late father. Always on a Mountain when I Fall, kills me every time I hear it.
I love all the classic Merle but like this song, he had other hits that were definitely hits at the time but it's gotten to where only fans really know them and appreciate them, but these are two more of them that I bet you guys would love. In fact, I tend to listen to them back-to-back sometimes. Sing Me Back Home Branded Man
Do you realize that there are now RSR members from every time zone across the world, there’s goin to be 24 hours of celebrating this channel and all the smiles you create on planet Earth. Happy New Year to everyone ✌️
Yep, you are right! I’m already having breakfast now on the 1st of January. Happy New Year! I come here every day for a dose of good music and positivity and the irresistible smiles of these two. We are blessed! 😊
Merle Haggard actually did time in prison and his humility comes through in his music. Listen to "Pancho and Lefty" which is a duet with Willie Nelson. Another great one by Haggard is "Red Bandana". Happy New Year!
When I was growing up, my dad was laid off from his factory job for several years in the early 80s. Each year, my mom would sit my sister and I down and explain that Christmas wasn't going to be as great as we might like it because Daddy wasn't working. But every year we woke to a Christmas tree full of presents! As an adult I see how Ma did it - wrapping a shirt and pants and socks and slippers and robe and pajamas in different boxes so that the space under the tree was full. Looking back, I realize that my sister and I might have had one or two toys, but we had a lot of gifts! My parents worked so hard to give us the perception of a plentiful Christmas! We were blessed. And this song reminds me of those lean years.
I went to school with a couple of his kids. The top story of his house was a huge trainset. In reality his kids had nothing to worry about financially. He did live in Cali.rip Hag..Happy New Year Amber and Jay🎉❤😊🥂🎆
My wife's been playing the heck out of this song, lately... so funny to find it here, today! Wow, didn't realize I've been listening to this for 50 years. I must be getting kinda old, huh?
Love me some Merle, thanks for all your entertaining listens guys! I don’t think you’ve ever checked out the great Guy Clark, and I would highly recommend him-one of the best singer songwriters out of Texas, known as the craftsman for his songwriting. Saw him live at the old Palms Playhouse in Davis, California many times with good friends, miss those days. So many great tunes-I’d recommend, off the top of my head, Homegrown Tomatoes, Randall Knife, The Cape…really can’t go wrong. Best buddy of Townes Van Zandt and listed as one of Bob Dylan’s favorite peer songwriters in a recent list he made in an interview, you really gotta check him out. Peace, God bless you both!
Happy new year guys, 23:45 here in uk…..here’s hoping you react to Slade this year 🤔 Cum on feel the Noize being a popular one, covered by your QR in the 80’s
Happy New Year 2024. A little snow belongs to winter. I live in Turku, Finland. It’s now -18 degrees celsius and I’m loving it. I’ll watch your latest reactions first and then I’ll go out to enjoy the winter here.
Damn, wishI’d seen this earlier! If I’d known you were going to be in Indy I’d have gladly bought you lunch at Shapiro’s (best kosher deli this side of the Atlantic) and taken you on a tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (a friend works for Roger Penske.)
Happy New Year from Canada, wishing you a healthy and happy 2024. “What Have You got Planned Tonight Diana” is another beautiful Merle song, think you would both enjoy it.
As a matter of habit I post a song on my Facebook page every month that features that month prominently in the title or in the song. This was my choice for December, not because it was a great world class song but because it was an iconic song for that era!! And, yes, it was like him, of and for the people!
My husband got his paycheck and pink slip about 2 weeks before Christmas in 1973. I swear this is true. What made it worse is he was a great bulldozer operator. My brother-law had started working there and he hated my husband. It was my sister's husband. He was a good friend of the mine operator. We moved in with my parents for awhile. It wasn't the end of the world. I'm sure you know that Merle was from California.
You two are terrific! I love the music reactions that you put out. Much of the music that you're experiencing and commenting on brings back fond memories from my childhood. 🙂
I absolutely love this song. I have had December's like this one. I used to sing this song on those December's it actually made me feel like things were going to be just fine. They were! Today I still play this song every December.❤❤❤ 5:17

Dang Jay, keep working out buddy. I worked out for 20 years. I had to stop because of a back injury. I loved and I've watched your progress. You're rocking it!
History lesson for younger folks... It's a good thing we had great music and movies in the '70s, 'cause a lot of other things were awful. A series of economic recessions, high inflation, unemployment, crime rates, divorce rates, etc. This song resonated deep then...
I'd recommend checking out The Petersens bluegrass cover of "If We Make It Through December". I'd also recommend their covers of "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Mama Mia", "Top Of The World", "Jolene".
Merle Haggard wrote this song too. He was a great song writer as well as singer/storyteller.
Happy new year guys - thank you for all the smiles! All the best for 2024
Okie from Muskogee was a tribute to his father. It was also one of his biggest hits
My dad was a real cowboy born in Oklahoma & raised his family in Wyoming…loved Merle Haggard songs! 🤠👍🏻
My favorite song of all time from the Hag. I had this feeling once when I was laid off and money was really tight and times were hard. But we did get through

I’ve worked construction 38 years, winter time has always been stressful. This song has always hit close to home, Merle was good at that
The best "not actually a Christmas song" Christmas song ever.
A master writer and singer. He never wrote a song he didn't live first. A darn good fiddle and guitar player too.
Happy New Year!! Thank you for all of your help this year!!! You really made a difference for me. THANK YOU!! By the way, did you know that Merle Haggard did a song with Clint Eastwood? It's called "Barroom Buddies" from the 70's baby!!

I would love to hear "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg. 🙏 HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!!!!! 🥳
So would I! Perfect for tonight.
I agree. I see lots of requests for it every year, but only one reactor I watch has done it.
When I was growing up, my dad was laid off from his factory job for several years in the early 80s. How unique to have the final #1 song of 1973 be a song fitting for the end of December. The music gods aligned with this song by Merle Haggard.
