Thank-you, Chris! One of the reasons why I follow you is because you have a somewhat unique perspective in the aquatic hobby. You are a detailed observer with diverse interests. You may have heard the saying of "not being able to see the forest through the trees". You also remember that the forest is also part of the environment. Because you have had the opportunity to travel the world, also adds a dimension to your perspective. Many people aren't fortunate to have that. Many of us do the best we can with the knowledge that we have been given. That knowledge is often only part of the story. Your travels and experience have so much to offer. That is why I follow you. Thank-you for sharing that! I am the type of person that especially enjoys videos and conversations that are more in depth, so I loved this video! I also admire how you don't tell people how something should be done, but what your observations lead you to doing things in a certain way (and if that has worked well). Be well!
This is a remarkable video. I have never seen so many unique and beautiful fish in a single video. Your review of the influences affecting fish coloration is insightful and very useful. I was especially gratifiied that you believe soil and plants are among the most important conditions necessary for high color. Thank you for this video. I am happy to subscribe to your channel and consider you a worthy resource for a wide range of knowledge about aquaria.
Hi Chris, I'm an American living in Ireland. Love your videos. I am living in a fish desert in my rural area. May I suggest you making a video how to capture such beautiful pictures of your fish and inverts. I'm selling mine but struggle capturing my fish in a flattering way. Blessings.
Yes a light blue color mimic's nature. I'm going to start my fishtank scape soon and I wasn't sure which color to add for the background, adding sand too. I'm proud to mention to you, thank you for all the studies and contents you give us because I see them all but I don't usually put comments here, I do give you a like!
Another great video Chris. I agree with you completely about creating great conditions for the fish. All mine have heavy plant growth which allows the fish to feel comfortable and show their best colors. Cheers from BC, Canada.
Hello from South Africa! The blue background is very interesting. That it enhances colour is something new to me. I always make the background black as it hides the equipment (always try to get it in black) as well as algae (I always try to keep some in the tank for certain critters). I also like darker or at least brown, earth coloured substrate. Have followed your work for a long time, you are the Milan model photographer for fish!
Hi, like your all videos. Lots of personal personal observations. Sometimes it's very useful, especially from such experienced person. Thanks for sharing. Lithuania
What a wild betta. Beautiful. Absolutely incredible fish there. And as always awe inspiring videography and photography! Im definitely curious about the backdrop issue and what other colors where tested.
Hi chris i am from India i don't think chirs and oli's products are available here in India. Loved the video ❤awesome information put together the right way❤
Love you channel, I’m also a huge fan of planted fish tanks, I keep Shrimp, tetras and male endlers with two electric blue rams, only the one tank due to me renting. I’m from Melbourne Australia
Thanks Chris. Another great video, your photography is top notch professional quality, the closeups you capture are fantastic, keep up the videos, I always enjoy watching, from just north of Tampa Florida
Great tips sir. Maybe can make a video about shrimp colors as well if it has different effects. I'm from borneo sarawak and the malayan shrimp here changes colors from time to time even in a stable tank
Are you also considering subspecies as a reason for color difference? Like with the sunfish in Florida you show? For example here in Florida we have multiple subspecies of Snook that have subtle but distinct differences. They are all snook but show variations.
I really enjoyed this video, and had subscribed long ago. I did add a thumbs up though, so there's that. I am already doing most of what you suggested here, yet most of my fish are still quite pale. My aquarium is in a south facing window, and I'm wondering if that might be playing into it, or if that's okay. I need the aquarium light to be on in order that my plants will thrive, but it is timed to come on around dawn, and to go off at sunset. The lighting is flexible enough that I can have it come on and turn of gradually, rather than just going on all of a sudden. It also can be set to dim in the afternoon, simulating clouds gathering in the afternoon, as they do in many places, including here. Might it be the placement in the window? I hope it's not because I have nowhere else to put them. If you have any other pointers which might help, I would really appreciate hearing them. I am from Nebraska, USA, though I used to live in Cambridge, UK. I know the high standards which European breeders have, and I frequently find myself disappointed by the lower standards here. I have found one very good dealer here in the United States, and guess where he sources a lot of his fish from? If you guessed Europe, you're correct! I am with you regarding animal welfare. My first priority for all the animals in my care, including (but not limited to) my fish. I am relatively new to the fish hobby though, and I'm still learning. If there's something I'm missing which could be done better, I'd be on it right away. I want the animals in my care to be living their best life, and I wish I had someone who could look at what I have and give me pointers, but I have no such person available to me. I also keep a number of different birds in an open flight aviary which covers my entire back garden, and gives them plenty of room to fly and explore. They are all in good health, and my birds usually outlive the average lifespan for their species. I hope that I can accomplish the same for my fish. I do have one advantage with my birds which I don't have with my fish, and it's that I have an avian vet who treats them if they get sick or acquire an injury. Again, you do absolutely beautiful work; probably the best fish videos on RUclips. I always am very happy when a new video drops, and always look forward to the next one. Thanks for doing all this excellent work! It is much appreciated.
It is hard to tell from observations in the wild alone what is caused by the environment and what is genetics from natural selection. Likely both are factors when it comes to phenotypes like colour.
I'm not sure. Some fish look really cool in black water which would be a dark brown background. But maybe the theory with blue is that most of the time, water shows up as blue. Not sure how nice a blue fish would look against a blue background, but plants are usually green or red.
I had black and just changed it to blue. Will see if I can detect a difference. Anyway I noticed my chilis got much more red by putting them in my new tank with hiding places. It’s a matter of feeling safe and comfortable. It was an immediate change in their color. That was with a black background and dark substrate versus a bowl that had a light sandy bottom with lots of plants
SINGAPORE. I am British but moved here thurty years ago. My intwrest in aquariums and ponds has been life long. I do voluntary field work on dragonfly surveys for the National Parks.

What kind of fish is 17:11 ?
a blue background compared to what? what other colors where tested?
I'm also very curious here. Did they try white? Black? Green? Grey? Tint?

@@eveningclicks7767 im curious if most fish even see blue... in the ocean it seems likely that they dont.
