That ceiling joist might need some reinforcing now it has that big cutout . What do others think on that ?
Like he said (in the overlay / subtitle) make sure that you are not drilling through anything structural. Agreed, it did kinda look like maybe it could be carrying some weight.....but since the video wasn't a tour of the framing of the ceiling, I am happy to @sparkydave's word for it being safe. Just like I'm taking his word for it that "one day" someone will go back and sort out that dodgy looking failing rubber insulation on that wiring. ;)
How much construction/structural engineering stuff is covered in electrical apprenticeships?
@@vidpromjm maybe just knowledge of it. There are other members that can take the weight transfer i am sure. Like he said it is not a weight bearing member.
Thanks for the great videos.... keep in coming. If you ever get a chance someday would love to see a couple of videos on how to wire up an RCD plug in the Bathroom and 1 on wiring up an outside plug for my deck lights. Anyway as usual keep up the great content.
hi i open my batten and i have 5 wire 3 from the main supply and 2 going to switch i believe .....how do i make it work when downlight has only 2 wire that can be fixed (the old batten was connectd with 5 wire)
That was a good end. "Always can up that bloody mess" 😄👍
Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi. Thanks mate for the DIY skill.
Actually it’s New Zealand mate 😂
Hey Mate thanks for the video! what about when the Bayonete has 4 cables? I have a simple batten bayonete light bulb and I'm trying to install a new ceiling lamp but it has only 3 slots for gree, black and red. but there is a 4th cable. withe/red. What do I do with that one? also, everything coming from Daisy chain. cheers!
Awesome vid bro. Nice job.
Great video thanks maytee...
I love the last part. Havent seen much sparkys doing that!🤣🤣
Thanks for the videos. Very helpful
Hi,
Can you do a video to changed downlights back to batten. I tried to do this but the batten is not wide enough to cover the hole.
Thanks
Sparkydave, I went to replace one of my HPM battern holder on a 2 way switch with a downlight however there were two sets of red wires going to the battern holder. The downlight has only one active input? Would you please be able to advise if it is possible to wire a downlight in this situation?
You just terminate both wires into the same input
@@haku4841 Thanks for that , yes I know now, got that working ages ago. Actually the second set of red wires were just a loop circuit and had nothing to do with the light fitting at all. Just joined them together with a wire joiner and normal active and neutral to the downlight terminals. Everything working perfectly.
Hey mate, I’m looking at doing a similar swap (old ceiling batten lights for new LED downlights in our lounge/dining area). Just wondering how far from the wall these LED downlights should be? And how much space should be between each light? Cutting new holes isn’t a problem - currently there’s only 3 light fixtures in the entire area (about 30sqm). Cheers!
it all depends on what the light angle is. some lights have a narrow beam, some have a wide flood beam.
I would recommend not exceeding 2000mm between downlights in the same row (Ideally 1200 - 1800 apart depending on the type of downlights used). First I would divide the room up (length wise) by one more than the number of downlights you would want in a row - and ensure beams in the roof cavity are not compromising any of the locations you would like to install the LED fittings or you’d have to recalculate the positioning to get the rows even - as long as the distance between each light fitting stays the same the end result will look nice (does not matter if one end of the row is 200mm closer to a wall than the opposite end). Next I would divide the room (width wise) into four and use the first quarter on either side to get the positioning of the (two) rows - and again ensure ceiling beams do not impact the placement of downlights. Every setup is different, depends on the size of the room whether its rectangle (two rows) or a perfect square shape (three rows). Sometimes placements may not be 100% feasible retrofit. Hard to explain but I hope you get the gist.
The downlights I commonly use are 90mm cut outs.
sparkydave Thanks mate, that’s really helpful!
Hey man o have some led downlights with plugs, what would be the best way to wire in? Add a plug or just connect wire? Cheers
I would of thought direct wiring would limit costs
A torch might be easier for us to see

Most important step:
Always clean up ya bloody mess!
Just wondering why you didn't cut downlight hole off to the side of the joist? Was it so you didn't have to repaint or would it have looked way off centre on the room.
Awesome video! Thanks! What if I want to install two or more downlights? How would I go about that? Thank you!
You have to be the only sparkie to ever clean up their own mess 😂
I liked this video, mainly because you demonstrated how to identify which cable was what. I'm about to replace a light fitting and needed to understand how to know what wire is what.
Hey Dave can you do a vid on multi meters please, what all the symbols and how you actually use it and for what. cheers mate
Rad vid! Always clean up your bloody mess
Hey Mate, When fixing a batten holder to a drywall (plasterboard) ceiling, should you use nylon plasterboard anchors, as the screws don't hold well to the plasterboard? Thanks.
It's normally fixed to studs, not just to plasterboard.
Is this legal ? I have that old style of wiring and id rather not replace it at this stage?
Rubber power cable is really dangerous and should be replaced whenever it is found. To give an example of how bad it is, Just moving the wires can be enough for the rubber insulation to flake off all along the cable run. In this case I guess we just have to trust that Dave knows what he is doing.
Thanks mate, though I would have liked to see best practice with what to do with the plug bases up in the ceiling
You can’t put a plug base up there without running an earth wire
chur ow
Amazing! exactly what I needed to see.Shot Dave.
Hey Dave, my wires have 2 neutral and 1 live (very old house) should I put the downlight in or just rewire?
Get a sparky to sort it out mate as long as your cables test fine you don’t need a rewire
