Colin's behaviour seemed weird because that's how it is supposed to be. Part of his arc is he's pretending to be like other men of the society to fit in and slowly realising it's not worth it. It's not him and actually Penelope reads him quite perfectly

Yep! While I still feel like some of the scenes showing that were VERY unnecessary, they do ultimately drop a lot of hits about that persona not being true to Colin & ultimately, he can't keep it up once he gets feelings for her.

Upon thinking about it further, I can really see why casual viewers would think they moved really fast. Anthony basically was an entirely new character in S2 so it was a fresh start. As was queen Charlotte. Polin were around s1-2 as side characters so it's easy to forget about their progression.
@@mariazamora6824 I rewatched season 1 & 2 before season 3 released so that my memory remain fresh while watching it but I also rewatched season 3 many times too.
I can totally understand people, who haven't watched season 1 and 2 before and are only watching season 3, feeling it was a little bit rushed but for me who just finished rewatching the previous seasons the day before season 3 released, it felt perfect. They had enough slow burn for 2 seasons. I was looking for some action and I absolutely love how Colin didn't waste any moment after he realised his feelings for Penelope and that he could lose her.
And I totally agree with you Saphne, Kanthony, George and Charlotte being new characters. The makers had to establish them in their seasons so getting together took some time but Polin had already been established so if they kept them apart for more time it would have felt dragging.
In the books, they explain why Colin took so long to fall in love with Penelope. He always expected love to hit him like a lightning bolt (which is part of the reason he thought his attraction to Marina was love at first sight), whereas his love for Penelope grew slowly. His love for her grew with every interaction they shared, he misinterpreted it as them becoming closer as friends. When he returns this time he continues to fall for her with each interaction but much more rapidly and realises something has changed about their relationship almost immediately after first seeing her, when he eventually realises his love for her he’s literally been falling for her for twelve years.
That’s so interesting! Each bridgerton seemed to enter love shaping it around how their parents were!
Yes! This!! Colin saw from his siblings relationship. Their love was fast and intense from the start thats why he think this how falling in love should be. I hope they put this dialogue in the show 😢 (they put Violet and Edmund friends to lovers story in but I think adding should help people understand more)

Eloise finally has some depth to her character instead of always criticizing others and her my way is the only right way attitude. She’s showing empathy, kindness and understanding of others. Her being friends with Cressida helps her grow.
@@agenttheater5 Eloise didn't befriend Cressida with the intention of hurting Penelope. Eloise explained it in this episode. She and Cressida got along in the country during the summer.

Book spoiler - I think this is maybe a crossover shoutout to the books where Penelope gave a huge portion of her Whistledown money (that in the tv series is hidden under the floorboards) to her mother/family.

@@HuntingViolets It's possible that she might do that later, but up till now they haven't been all that great to her, and it kind of seems like the point of making that money was to eventually be able to use it to get away from them. And as far as she knew, revealing to her mother that she had a source of income would probably lead directly to it thereafter being considered all communal family property, so unless they'd become drastically better to be around, which they hadn't, I don't see why she should do that.
I think it was Pen ignoring Colin that shook him out of his own head and made him realize she's grown up too. As he says in season 2, their relationship was so natural that he's always taken it for granted. He brings it up several times how loyal she's always been, how she's the one who is always responding to his letters and wants to talk about his travels even after everyone else is over it. She's always been his support and he didn't realize it
With her not replying and ignoring him now, it's like he lost his balance. When he goes to find her again and try to get back her support, he realizes she's not his little friend anymore. She's grown up just like he has, but now she's the one floundering in her new adultness and he (who became a whore over the summer) now has the experience to be her support

I think its about how each season, the main couple gets a glow up. How Anthony got one when it was his turn. Not saying he wasn't hot before, but the stylists know what they're doing and it's purposeful.
@roxirock5455 oh 100%. It's just crazy how people (in the show and surprisingly real life) are so shocked that she is beautiful (or that colin is as handsome as anthony).
I think it's because for me, it's seeing a curvier girl on a popular show and being accepted/loved as she is. A reader, someone who was a wallflower and being herself.
It makes me feel confidence I never really had growing up.

I think it's also about appearances, just like now when people get better-fitting clothes and hairstyles that suit them. But it's just as much about self-esteem, having faith in yourself. What we look like influences that, without a doubt.

to be fair, Colin is always complimenting Pen's personality more than her looks, even now. Having seen what's out of this season so far, it seems he's discovering how much he likes her, more than discovering that she's beautiful

@@PinkPopcastI think a big part of why he's noticing now is that now he's had sex and realized that sex is not like in the poems if the people are strangers, so NOW he knows that attraction is much more than basic hotness but it requires a an emotional connection to be as epic as romance says it is, and how -he realizes now- he wants/expects it to be. So, he's a romantic and had sex and now he sees what he wants is to make love.

I have the theory if pen literally confessed as far back as season 1 Colin would’ve been into it. Colin is one of those sweet summer children that needs someone to push him into revelation lol.
The guy doesn’t even know what love is, he mixed it up with infatuation with Marina and assumed he just had to do what all the other gentlemen are doing: chase the diamond.
He assumes Love is a thunderbolt and it happens when a new face appears on the dance floor and she suddenly gives him attention.
His delayed come to Jesus moments make sense, honestly. He knew he had a special feeling for pen, but he couldn’t decipher it and figured it was just a childhood affection. He got insecure at the rejected feeling from other men trying to mock him for publicly being affectionate to pen.
Because I’m sorry, the last two seasons of him committing sm impropriety with pen (taking her hand and walking away unchaperoned, dancing more than once w her, exchanging letters, being overprotective, finding any excuse to touch her hand.) that’s not ‘she’s my lil sis and buddy’ vibes.

I'm with Rizzo. He does not need to beg. Colin hasn't done particularly anything bad other than that declaration in public. I mean its okay if u don't like her like that(for now) but don't say in front of eligible suitors. He could've framed it better. But he's changing and becoming mature and so is Pen. She never actually put herself in society(not her true self). But now she's gaining confidence and that does change things.

I think he always liked her, she was basically one of his closest friends. It was just the physical attraction element of it was missing for him. And it’s very often hard to see people you’ve known since childhood that way 😀

Yeah I actually really hated that because it’s so against his character. In the books Penelope was at Bridgerton house and accidentally overheard Colin say that to Anthony and Benedict because they were teasing him quite a bit about his closeness to Penelope. So in that sense it was him being embarrassed and harassed by his brothers and was just a split moment rebuttal to try to make them leave him alone. I guess it was changed in the show for ✨drama✨ purposes.
Sorry Benji, I’m with Rizzo on this one! People grow and change, especially this young. They’re supposed to be like, early 20s right? Colin is going through a glow up and figuring out his real self, not just the one that society wants. And it’s the fact that Penelope is now actively looking for a husband that’s going to change his mind about her as a romantic prospect. He didn’t think of her that way before because she wasn’t really putting herself out there at all, and he had her nicely placed in the friend box. When our brains categorize someone in one way, we tend not to change that unless outside circumstances change. Now that romantic attention is on her from literally anyone else, he’s forced to consider whether he is part of that romantic attention too. It’s pretty standard friends to lovers, but we love to see it. :)

@@PinkPopcast I’m neurodivergent too and also find that sentiment frustrating- sometimes I read someone correctly sometimes I don’t- I choose to rely on body language, tone/ inflection and just asking them when not sure but neuros (Neurotypicals) will still get annoyed/ bothered sometimes 💜😊

@@Lime1958 I am Pen's stan, but saying "Whistledown is Penelope reacting to bullies" is just not true. She made fun of Cressida's dress once in relation to the seamstress lady. She went after George making fun of his mental health in S01, she without any reason instigates shit with the queen (like she hasn't even spoken to her why do you agitate her every damn time? It's never addressed by Penelope). She also did what she did to Marina and Eloise...that's not fighting bullies that IS bullying. Whistledown is how she vents and it showed clearly when she immediately regretted publishing after her talk with Colin.

I think what Lady Whistledown wrote about Colin was true and I think that's also what bothered him even more, he's pretending to be something he's not. Penelope can see through his act. I think Colin is finally seeing how important Penelope is to him, he always cared about her but is now realizing that friendship is a two way street. Her not answering his letters over the summer through him off completely because she's usually the one person he can rely on to answer. She is his biggest supporter. Can't wait to see how their relationship progresses through out the season. Polin ❤

I would argue that in season 1, she was GOING to tell him! "When one is in love, one should declare it fervently." Then he cut her off and was like, "imma go traveling b/c you encouraged me to be more open" and then s2 almost EVERY CONVO is interrupted by Eloise, which is making Pen's double life hard enough w/o trying to pin Colin. Between the loss of Eloise & Colin running his mouth at the end of s2 (and turning up as a whole new person) Pen in s3 has every reason for not wanting to go near the Bridgerton fam at all. Which has made Colin notice her all the more.
Also, he kept telling those girls, "If u knew about my travels, i would have to marry you," and yet WROTE TO PEN all about it?!
Also, Francesca is my neurodivergent QUEEN 👸 😍 I haven't read much about her, so the portrayal took me by surprise, and i am ❤ here ❤ for ❤ it ❤

I read Francesca as neurodivergent too/introvert! (I am also a neurodivergent-introvert) I saw a video on RUclips breaking down with examples from this season so far on how she is/could be read as neurodivergent specifically as autistic but I think she could fall almost anywhere under the neurodivergent umbrella

I understand Colin's POV. He probably always assumed no matter what Pen would always be in each other's lives & it's rare in their society for men and women to be friends. Pen actively looking for a husband means she's growing up. Colin's very insecure with a lot that has gone down. He's acting like his brothers & other men would. He's going to have to get vulnerable again.

Idk, I can see both sides. Pen was so obsequious around Colin in the first two seasons that it was hard for me to take her seriously. I was bummed on her behalf that Colin didn't reciprocate her crush, but I also didn't blame him.
However, it shouldn't just take a few new clothes and hairdos for Colin to suddenly think Pen "counts" as a woman or to be attracted to her. "They are just clothes," as Colin put it this episode.
I do like that Colin still sees Pen as a friend during her glow-up here, and shows that he values her and her feelings. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say the most satisfying moments would be when they can show both physical and emotional/mental attraction.

Colin gets to know Pen through her being his little sisters Best Friend, so it makes sense she's placed firmly in the friend zone in his mind. Now Colin & Pen are both growing up & growing closer
I feel like a big thing that's overlooked in Colin not seeing Pen as a romantic option is that he's 3 years older than her. She's 19 in this season and he's 22. It's not a big age gap, but it makes sense to me that he wouldn't be interested in her until she was a bit older, and bc he associates her with Eloise in his mind.

I think the reason that Colin doesn't immediately recognize his feelings for Penelope is because they have known each other since they were young kids and he is also 2-3 years older than her. It's obvious from Season 1 and Season 2 that he is very fond of her and has love for her but it just hasn't dawned on him that it could be romantic. If they had been adults when they met, and it played out this way, I might agree with Benji but the fact that they met so young shapes a lot of their relationship.

Colin has always liked Penelope. We’ve seen that over 3 seasons now. He says as much this episode. He misses her when he’s away. He seeks her out always. He values her. He respects her. He can’t lose her. The second she is upset with him it eats him up inside so much he wants to make it up to her. Colin also doesn’t realise Penelope’s affections for him run so deep. I don’t think that should be held against him. Season 3 for Colin is about him realising his feelings for Penelope have been there all along… not just appearing now. I think in his head he’s made up how love is supposed to feel or be & he’s only working out that love is built on a foundation of friendship first then grows to be more.
But his mom always told him that, so I guess I’m just surprised that he missed it

People have been saying that this season is moving fast. It's true but it's important to remember that Colin and Penelope's story began from the first season. All the little moments between them were lart of it. They always had feelings for each other. This season is just for Colin to come to his senses. Also, not all of the seasons are gonna be a slow burn like Kanthony cuz theirs were a slooooow burn

I'm with Rizzo on this. People grow. Plus it's not as if she stepped out at the ball in that new dress/look and Colin ran across the room to chat her up. It's not her glow up that will change things. He cares for her deeply. She's the person who knows him and who he has a deep connection with. They've been friends for years and he's just not considered what his feelings really mean. Sometimes it takes a spark to make us silly humans wake up to what our feelings mean.

Love watching y'all react to this! It was actually watching your S1 reactions that got me into the show. This season has so many tropes and I am living for it: Friends to Lovers (Colin/Pen), Enemies to Lovers (Colin/Whistledown), Dating Coach, She Fell First He Fell Harder, Best Friend's Brother....it goes on and on.

Your argument was so entertaining! My take on Colin 'suddenly' liking Penelope is that he has always kind of viewed her as off limits as she was his sister's best friend! Which might also explain why he said what he said at the end of season 2, although i still think him saying it to those people was the real heart of the problem. Penelope and Eloise having a falling out meant that Colin could interact with her in a way he couldn't before, and as events unfold in this season (trying to be as spoiler free as possible lol) he is able to realize that their connection is not really only friendship. If you pay attention to earlier seasons, he has always sought her out, protected her, and told her how much he appreciates her. He also generally, apart from that comment, has always been a great friend to her. It was just a matter of something happening that allowed him to identify that the feelings he might be having are romantic, as he is extremely oblivious to his own emotions.

Also I love the way they introduce Hannah’s Francesca. A lot of people have been theorizing that she is neurodivergent and I love that! The scene is episode 4 on the street where she’s talking to John is such a good example of that. And I’m not a fan of F boy era Colin. And honestly Penelope was right. He was being a little womanizing poser and he talked trashed about her behind her back to the lads!

but tbh idk if he was talking trash. i think it was his way of saying penelope is his childhood friend, the girl next door who’s practically his sister’s sister in his eyes. yes it sounded like it could be cruel, but knowing colin’s character i’m sure it only sounds mean out of context which is how we, and penelope, heard it. colin clearly has always adored pen, i just think this season was his first inclination that it doesn’t have to be strictly platonic as it has been (in his eyes) since they were kids.

I didn’t know and if i don’t see you like that then that’s it. People grow and sometimes it takes them time to develop feelings when someone is already there. But it doesn’t make them a bad person. i’m on rizzo’s side. i’ve seen a lot of ppl hating on colin/polin, likening it to plots where a guy ignores a girl or her feelings for him whatever. but from colin’s pov, she’s truly always been a family friend and he had no idea that she was even interested in him (he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed), so this season is him realizing damn maybe she IS the girl of my dreams after all if i step back from seeing her as just a childhood friend/long time neighbor. they’re giving you belong with me by taylor swift. i won’t say more to spoil the progression of the next episodes, but i think it’s episode 3 where i suddenly starting rooting for colin and polin as a ship. i love the trope where girl falls first but guy falls harder. ik it’s not everyone’s cup of tea tho.

I have been loving this season so far! We have been slowly watching these 2 fall in love with each other (pen longer) for the last few seasons. It's the season of Jane Austen's Emma and they've been doing a good job. This slow burn is great. While I understand why Eloise is angry I find it frustrating- what pen did was not good- but Eloise never stops to check her own privilege or the ways that she has hurt people in similar ways that Penn has. She loved whistledown and ate up everything she says, she only became angry when pen as Whistledown told the truth about her- I need them to make up. Colin is so dense/thick about Penn's feelings, I think subconsciously he has always loved her but never really delved into his feelings to see how real they were because of subconsciously believing she would never reciprocate them . He also clearly represents knightly and Penelope represents Emma so it makes sense why colin would think she would never reciprocate his feelings.
I need him to delve into those feelings a little sooner, not take years 😂

She was always agreeing with him before, but now willing to voice her own mind since it seems all chances are lost. I remember in Season 1 when Marina finally understood that Pen was in love with Colin, one thing she said was something along the lines as "he sees you even as a little sister like Hyacinth. He sees me as a woman and as a woman i must make these difficult choices for myself & my child." And I then in Season 2, she did indeed pull for Pen by saying "if you opened your eyes, you will already see you have so many ppl you make happy: your family, Penelope."
So I REALLY do think that all the right foundational feelings about Pen were already inside Colin. It was just all about seeing her as a WOMAN, thus the makeover and Pen ACTIVELY searching for a husband this season. I do believe you can truly love your friend more than the world but to be IN LOVE with your friend requires you to be able to see them in a more physical capacity (unless you're on the ace spectrum).

34:00 I’m of the mind that Colin has always been in love with Penelope but never recognised it because he confused his romantic feelings for platonic feelings. There’s been many scenes where we’re left stumped trying to figure out a platonic explanation for but haven’t found one: The what-a-barb scene in season 1 ep 4, his voice faltering as soon as Penelope walks in on season 1 episode 8 then he goes back to singing like normal as soon as he breaks eye-contact, the eye sex scene in season 2 episode 2, the fact that like he says, he’s always leaving mid conversation with other people to go to Pen as soon as he spots her. I think Colin thinks love is supposed to hit him like a lightning bolt but what he has for Pen is a slow-burn that spans years. Just my opinion though🤷🏾♀️

Throughout the seasons you can see that he's always liked her, maybe he didn't notice it but you can see but the way he would look at her or be happy to talk to her. Maybe for the first time he's actually looking at her and being like oh maybe she's not just my friend, she's a woman and he's seeing what she has seen in him this whole time. Plus, when you feel more confident hence the new wardrobe people can see that confidence as well, so he's seeing her in a whole new light.

I completely agree with the idea that he shouldn’t have had to like her romantically this entire time to “deserve her.” That feels so odd to me when I see people say that. He grew up with her! It’s extremely rare that friends, especially both people, see each other romantically after years of time together. Often times when friendship turns to love, it can be one sided as we see here for Pen. If the roles were reversed, would we say the woman needed to love the man all this time to deserve him? We don’t choose when we fall in love with someone. I also don’t think the narrative is completely that he goes for her when another man does, there are other moments in the episodes ahead that something is starting in him.

A) thanks rizzo for not pitting the women against each other. There is so much discourse over the decisions they make (obviously, I participate in the conversation) and forgetting the nuance of the characters. It is tiring having to meet in the middle or defend the characters for doing what they needed to do. Also, we may be insulting characterization that is written.
B) cringe Colin is purposeful. Don’t worry. You will love him. Out of all the characters, he reminds me of Darcy the most.
C) i am mixed with the side plots. Some scenes could be cut or condensed.
D) I like what they did with Cressida and Eloise so far, but am worried if all of Cressida’s development would be wiped in part 2.

Sorry Benji, but I have to agree with Rizzo on this one. Feelings change as people grow and it's very normal to suddenly see things in a way you didn't before. That's what's so great about friends to lovers. Also, Penelope is not entitled to Colin's romantic feelings. He was wrong for saying those things in the end of last season, but he doesn't owe her any feelings that go beyond the friendship they always had. Especially when he didn't even know they existed in the first place.
No she’s not entitled to his romantic feelings, but when he decides to give them to her then she is entitled to be cautious entering a relationship with somebody that hasn’t been into her for the last 20 years and she’s also entitled to make him work to show his affection is true lol

I agreed with Rizzo about people growth and sometimes something like a spark, a change in the behaviour of the person and suddenly you see that person with a different light, not everyone starts their relationship like the others two couples.
Colin and Penelope's relationship is different, because of their friendship and how deeply they already know one another.
Colin already had platonic feelings for Penelope, and we saw that throughout the others 2 seasons.
Colin always searched for Pen at the balls to talk to her and make jokes about society, how Pen is the only one who really pays attention to the philosophies that Colin wants to share with others about the trips he takes, but no one cares, except Pen. How he talks it easily, as he doesn't do it with anyone else, the insecurities he feels because he doesn't feel like he hasn't found his purpose in life yet and Pen also shares her dreams with him. Colin asks Pen if she's okay when he feels something is wrong because he knows when something isn't right because he knows her better than anyone. How he defends Pen's family, because of her of course, the look of admiration and connection they both give at each other in the ball in season 1 when they are making jokes or in the second season, the look of longing he gives her when he returns from his trips and see her after months, or the look of enchantment he gives Pen when she tells him about her dreams, the letters exchanged between them, Colin defending Pen from Cressida, Colin dancing with her because he truly likes dancing with Penelope, breaking all the rules of etiquette with Penelope etc etc etc, this moments, for the high society of the 19th century, it is literally them already courting each other, so much so that Fife in the last episode of the last season asks if Colin was courting her, they practically behave as married people might behave towards each other at that century. They know each other a thousand times more than many couples who got married in the 19th century.
The difference is that with Pen's insecurities, she thinks there's no chance of him wanting to be with her, so she never has the courage to tell him how she feels, she is scare of losing him as a friend and Colin who doesn't see beyond their friendship (perhaps for fear of losing her friendship too) and can't see beyond the little girl he met many years ago, they both remain in this friendship that borders on something more, but without both realising it. There was also the fact that almost in every interaction, Colin's sister, Eloise is present when they are together or Eloise comes and interrupts their conversation and moments alone, so it is difficult for Colin to see beyond because of the constant presence of Eloise.
Of course, there are certain things that, even as friends, we have difficulty sharing, but they already have the important foundation in a love story. Friendship, understanding, respect, protection, admiration, and loyalty.
What was missing in their relationship, unlike the other couples, was desire. And that is what it needs to be more explore in this season/part 1.
